  • In this video, Emilia Hernandez documents the locations of samples collected for the Grains lab for GEL 109L Sedimentology and Stratigraphy at UC Davis. She is along the Copper river in Alaska in an area that is mostly fed by glacial melt water. Thus, there is a lot of suspended sediment in the rivers. The samples were collected in an area that is submerged by river water on warm days when there's more ice melting, but is exposed at lower river levels, which is when Emilia collected the samples. Note how variable the grain sizes are across the bars and channels. These variations are very typical of rivers that experience large variations in flow speeds.
