  • On this day I decided to be a little sneaky by biologyzing behind someone's property in Visalia. I looked at some puddles in a man-made agricultural ditch channel. It was enlightening to see what organisms will exploit the current ecology of drying puddles.
    Species observed:
    Animals:
    Chironomidae (Midges)
    Culicidae (Mosquitoes)
    Lithobates catesbeianus (American bullfrog)
    Tyrannus verticalis (Western kingbird)
    Piranga ludoviciana (Western tanager)
    Contopus sordidulus (Western wood pewee)
    Sturnus vulgaris (European starling)
    Zenaida macroura (Mourning dove)
    Picoides nuttalli (Nuttal's woodpecker)
    Plants:
    Eucalyptus sp.
    Claytonia perfoliata (Miner's lettuce)
    Gallium aparine (Common bedstraw)
    Bromus diandris (Ripgut brome)
    Quercus lobata (Valley Oak)

Hey man! As a random viewer, i love your content so far for its educational value. I also really enjoy the enthusiasm you have for teaching about this stuff, as it's the same way I want to produce content I'd like to make in the future! One word of advice: I really like your noises associated with your family labels and definitions, just make them a bit quieter, as rn they just jump out at you really hard when you would otherwise have a really relaxed and open environment for learning about these diptera larvae (for example at 5:48)

Yeah I subbed lol your energy is infectious. I work with insects all day at the University of Guelph and I still enjoyed hearing about all the bugs I'd be seeing daily anyway. Great job, don't get caught

Thank you!! I agree, the sounds can be quite jolting. I'll make sure to tone it down lol :)
