Use a plastic freezer bag over the filter after you loosen it , turn filter off as you hold bag over the filter and the bag will collect any oil with no spills , no runs ,drips or errors .

brilliant....thanks!
nice!!
that's a useful tip, but in this case it does not work. The oil filter goes in horizontal and does not sit in a vertical. But, that does work well for vertical style oil filters. IE: Ram 1500 2020 with 5.7L.
Excellent idea!
Ok boi! I am used to doing my own oil change on the cars I’ve had, but since I got my f150 I’ve been taking it to the Stealership, but now is the time I start doing oil changes on my own 18. Thanks
They do suck on this truck
Really well made video. Not sure why I’m watching as I’ve done this many times, but this is very helpful for a first timer.
Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the nice and easy to follow video with clear explanations ! Only thing I do different is at the end of it all check the dipstick after running engine for an accurate level .
Yes checking the dip stick is a good practice. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for making the video, it was a great help.

Thank you for the clear instructions! I guess I have No Excuse for Not doing it myself now! 😀
Thank you for watching, you can do it!
Nice detailed instructions, couldn’t have been better thank you!
Thanks David!
Myk thanks for sharing your time and talents🙏🏾
👍
I used a form-a-funnel to direct the oil down instead of it hitting the cross member and splashing everywhere. Worked great.
That's a good idea!
Just bought a 2018 Thanks for the tutorial homie 👍💯
Nice!! Good luck with the oil change!
Great job, easy to follow, explained how to change oil very well. Thanks.
Glad to hear!
Wonderful vid. The best one yet.
Thanks for watching
Excellent instructional video. Nice work and thank you.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment
Really like your garage floor!
Thanks, it was quite the chore to do, but I’m really glad i did it.
Very well done video. Used it to make sure everything went smoothly on my 2018.
I have the aluminum oil pan and plug so that part was a bit different. Also, with my truck flat on the ground the oil filter started dripping out the back hole you showed and none came out the front. Might save someone a mess if they do it on the ground like me.

So--- do you have the FX4 package? Wondering what the difference is with some having a traditional pan and plug versus this plastic setup.
@@SoCalCommuter I have the metal pan with the regular bolt and it's a 2018 XLT.
Well explained. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Solid video - not sure when Ford changed things up, but I changed my 2020 F150 3.5 Ecoboost oil for the first time today, and it has a metal oil pan and a traditional steel drain plug.
That is Interesting, this plastic pan is a one time use, if removed, it has to be replaced. It sounds like they’ve learned their lesson on the plastic pan!
John Ford changed the oil pan to aluminum mid 2018 model year.
I've heard my 18 has a metal one also by multiple valvoline shops..🤷♂️... I'll find out when I get my ramps😅
Anyone know if we can upgrade from the plastic drain plug to a metal one.
Thanks
Very informative. I just bought a 2018 f150
Glad it's not like my wife's cat that has the newer oil filter.
Is your wife’s car a Ford?

Thanks for the vid. Doing my first oil F150 3.5eb soon. One suggestion, wait on removing oil fill cap. It'll slow down initial flow. My Outback shots a big initial stream if cap is off.
Thanks for the tip!
Yep, do not remove that top cap or the flow will be wayy too fast. Learned that the hard way.
Only tip I have for this, put oil cap in hood latch so you never forget to add oil after reinstalling drain plug and filter.
Good tip!
I go set my funnel in the oil filler neck with a rag over it
Thanks for the video...
Thanks for watching
Awesome. Thank you
Yes!!
Im about to do this for my 2015 F150 XLT 3.5 ecoboost. Ive been warned not to take this in to the dealership or mom and pop places for an oil change. Guess I'll stop being a sheep and do this myself. Thank you for the step by step instructions.
Good luck, once you do it once you’ll be comfortable doing it going forward.
I don’t take my vehicles to the Rapid Oil Change places. They absolutely don’t care about your vehicle. They actually left the new oil out after draining the old. Luck would have it the low oil pressure alarm did activate and I caught it before the engine was ruined. The next time I went they told me my car was ready and I popped the hood and pulled the dip stick. The old oil was still there. The last time ever that I went there they left the dip sticks halfway out and the cover on the bottom hanging by one bolt. They are fired forever.
Good move do your own oil changes don't let those kids touch your truck
A ford dealership isn’t capable of changing the oil in a ford truck?😂😂😂😂🤡
Nice video

Thanks for the vid. Now I know what I'm in for. Have a 3 ton jack but gravel driveway . I don't have tire ramps. Should I put jack under
Wheel axle?
Yeah just make sure you use jack stands

My 2018 3.5 has aluminum pan and traditional plug. Sway bar still on the way. Installing a Fumoto plug in future.
Interesting, I wonder when they changed it?
@@Myksgarage Sometime mid year. I have the seeping polymer pan on a 2018
My 2019 3.5 had a regular drain plug as well
Thank you!!!
Yes!!
You can get filter relocation kit to make it easier to change it.
thanks for watching
Just did the first oil change on my 2019 F-150 w/3.5L built July-19 and it has a regular metal plug. I even stopped by O'Reily and bought a spare plastic plug before the oil change, but I'll be returning it.
BUT I am ticked, what kind of sadist figured this oil change was okay? The plug drips right onto the anti sway bar, so you either have to cover it with something or wipe it off after to prevent drops of oil on your concrete. Then the set up on the oil filter is even more screwed up, you'd better park in the yard for the first few days after an oil change because there's going to be minuscule drops of oil coming out of that crap for days. They could have went to a remote set up like on the new Ranger.
Yeah they didn’t engineer the the oil change process very well. Looks like they might have done away with plastic yellow drain plugs for the new trucks. Thanks for watching
Need to run the engine for a bit after the oil change to fill the Oil Filter. Once that is done you can get a good reading on the dip stick for the oil level.
Good tip, thanks for watching!
Interesting for a long time all the oil filters were FL 1A Ford has really changed.
Yes, and this plastic oil drain bolt is weird
I have a late run 2018 F150, it has a metal oil pan, with a 19 mm plug
Interesting, What engine do you have?
@@Myksgarage 3.5 ecoboost
Excellent video. Will this work for the 2018 Expedition Platinum AWD?
Should be the same engine
Does all the oil drain with the trucks front being lifted on ramps??? I would think level or even jack the rear up for best drainage
It seems like it all drains out with the front jacked up
My 2018 Ford F150 Limited 4wd has a regular drain plug and metal pan.
Sounds like they cheaped out on my truck....
Myks Garage are you sure it’s not a 2.7 eco boost? I know the 2.7’s are plastic. I even have a 2019 Ford Fusion Sport AWD with the 2.7 eco boost and it’s plastic like yours. The engine is factory and same as F150 2.7 eco boost
Mine is for sure the 3.5L Ecoboost, I had a 2015 3.5 with the same plastic oil pan
Just did the first service on my 2019 Expedition and thank god it doesnt have this stupid setup, normal metal oil pan and 15mm oil plug, other then having to remove all the shields/covers it was a regular oll oil change.
It sounds like Ford has wised up and gone back to a metal pan and plug. Was the oil filter in the same place as mine?
@@Myksgarage yes same oil filter location with two drain spots.
I guess time will only tell if these plastic oil pans will hold up. Thanks for Watching
what engine you have ?
@@brandonblack2095 only one engine available, the 3.5 EcoBoost
Would this be the same for a 2018 f150 with a V8 as far as the steps and layout? I see I’ll need 5w20 and probably a different filter size. But as far as layout and steps are the v6 and v8 mapped the same?
Yeah it should the same procedure and layout
Plastic oil pan and drain plug…..top 10 of Fords dumbest ideas ever. What were they thinking????? Thank you for the video.
Yeah crazy engineering
5/16 and 8 mm are the identical size, just like 3/4 and 19 mm. Ford uses metric so yeah, it is an 8mm.
👍
Wonder when they changed out that plastic pan and plug? My King Ranch was built 10/18 and has a metal pan with a bolt drain plug. I crawled under for first oil change expecting to see what’s in your video and was surprised by the classic oil pan/drain bolt set-up. 😁
Interesting....
We have two 2018 eco boost trucks at work and both have the plastic plug.
I felt the same way when I got under my 2018 XLT 3.5 Ecoboot. Metal pan and blot drain plug! Took me an hour to figure it out...
@@Dahita me too! I kept looking for that stupid yellow plug!
I was tempted to get those drive on ramps but after seeing the reviews of them breaking scared me away 😢
I’ve had my for 15 years and they have been great!
@@Myksgarage okay, ill try it out. Maybe some people got defective ones and didn't inspect it before use. Thank you.
@@jeffcz7306 I was hesitant too. My thought is I was going to use them to get it up and then put some jack stands under the frame in case they do collapse the jack stands are there to back it up
I've used them for years too, no issues. I have two sets (4) so I can raise the truck level. I have jack stands also because my father taught me well but it's a truck and I'm thin enough to get under it without any lift if I had too.
@@jeffcz7306
Just Have to make sure of the weight rating it supports.
hey man quick question....is getting the front wheels elevated just for ease of access? or is it a functional step required to drain oil properly?
It’s just to get more room to work under the truck. It will all drain out with it sitting level on the ground. Thanks for watching
Did you elevate front and back tires…or just front?
Edit: I misread my manual. The layout confused me, but after double checking it is actually 5w-30. Back to napa I go
Are we using different owners manuals? Mine said 5w-20 for 3.5 ecoboost... maybe I misread my manual
What year is yours?
@@Myksgarage 2018. I misread my manual it's laid out kinda funky. 5w-30is the correct oil

Excellent support there too. They really stand behind their products.
Do you have to get a new gasket for the drain plug every oil change?
I didn’t, and it didn’t leak oil. If it’s leaking then it can be replaced, or a new drain plug is like $7
You're suppose to change the plug at every oil change I just order them in bundles off of Amazon. All Ecoboost have the same plug.
How often (mileage) do you change? And have you had the dreaded csm phaser issue?
I haven't had that issue thankfully.
I usually change it around 5,000 miles
I change every 8000km or 1 per year, what ever comes first
Did my first oil change on my ‘18. When I turned the pan plug the oil shot it out of my hand and the oil shot straight out so hard it shot through my front passenger wheel and all over the brakes. Huge freaking mess all over my shop floor. WHAT. THE. ACTUAL…@!&!!?
Yeah that sucks!
Quick fyi not all 2018 have that plug.. sone have the traditional screw
Interesting, maybe the 5.0 v8 ??
What is the part number for the oil filter, thanks about to change the oil
Motorcraft FL-500s
Here’s a link: amzn.to/3EC4Cn7
Have these plastic pans and plug known to be more leaky than it’s metal counterparts?
Not sure, but I Recently had a 2016 F150 with the two. 7 L ecobboost with the plastic pan and in that generation and year a leaky pan was common
Yes, after about 10 or more service intervals the plastic plug starts leaking. The o ring goes bad and you have to replace the whole plug because you can't get the right size o ring by itself.
Hi Myk I need an oil change on my 2018 f-150 eco boost and I was wondering if you would recommend the best place to take it that’s trustworthy? Thankyou
If you’re not going to do it yourself, I’d say perhaps the just taking it to the dealer is pretty trustworthy place?
Myks Garage - ok Thankyou I kinda am worried about places that say they do it but don’t actually! I do want to learn to do it but I have no experience doing anything on a vehicle! 🙏🏻
An oil change is easy to do. If not comfortable, I’d say just take it to the dealer and let them do it for you. That way there is at least documentation when it comes to warranty work
Myks Garage - Yeah you’re right on the documentation!
When I do my oil change on my 2017 F150 2.7eco I leave the oil cap tight on the engine and it seems to create a more controlled flow of the oil when it take off the yellow drain plug.I think Less velocity due to the vacuum created as the oil comes out of the engine!?
Nice video, very useful. However, if you don't know how to get your hood open you likely should not be attempting a simple oil change.
Yes, but i wanted to include all the details!
we need more clanging tools in the background to help with the stellar audio
Yeah?
I see you didn’t show what happens when you pull the plug out. It makes a big mess with it being on the side as opposed to the bottom. I used a piece of cardboard to have the oil ricochet down to the oil pan. Terrible spot for Ford to put the plug. Wish they would have made some type of spigot to drain the oil.
I’ll show it next time
Ronin makes one but it’s $80. Look up ford ronin drain plug
Why you skip the part where the HOT OIL shoots out of the horizontal drain hole at 90mph?? It screams out of there, and no way holding a catch pan that way will catch any! My entire driveway is covered because it shoots out 3 feet!!
I did another video where I show that: czcams.com/video/HRJjcsiWzJg/video.html
It’s a mess!!
Is the oil pan plastic?
Yes it is
Ford says use blended synthetic. Walmart carries Ford brand oil.
Yes!
My manual says synthetic blend or full synthetic. Tech at dealer says full synthetic for turbo engines.
The manual recommends a synthetic blend 5w 30 oil. If using a full synthetic oil, will it still be 5w 30?
Good question, I’m not sure. I just used a 5w30 synthetic
If using a high performance, high HTHS polyol ester / poly-a-olefin synthetic like a Redline product, then a 5w20 grade would likely give you the most power and torque. Most popular synthetics sold in North America are NOT synthetic oil - even the lauded "M" brand. The Better Business National Advertising Board determined that processed petroleum oil could have similar - though not same - properties as some synthetics, So "Fully Synthetic Oil" labeling will be allowed for lubricants made with a majority % high group petroleum starters. Unfortunate for the consumer "Synthetic" is just an advertising term now, not the traditional SAE definition that we knew prior to the 1990's. So a Motorcraft Synthetic and Syn Blend are interchangeable here, though the "synthetic" product will be higher performing to some degree in some areas. Ecoboost use a 30 grade synthetic . I would use a "Euro" MB229.51 Approval ACEA 5W30 equivalent product in my ecoboost. Look on the spec sheet (PDS) for an HTHS between 3.1 and 3.5 cP for a hard working turbo application. - Sandy
Follow the manual, using a grade 3 oil, synthetic blend, or a true full synthetic. Is just a matter of oil quality and different detergents
Just make sure it is 5w30
Do these trucks have trans fluid dipsticks
I’m not sure
No they don't. Very few new vehicles have trans fluid dipsticks anymore. Refer to your manual or service department for how the fluid level is checked.
on my 2018 3.5 Eco-boost Explorer the trans dip stick is under the air box. Got to love Ford.
Tell us what size the bolts are, man!
Sorry about that
I've heard the 2019/20 3.5 engine now comes with a metal pan and traditional bolt. The plastic pan and that massive plastic bolt is a major fail from Ford. I'm guessing they will eventually switch all of them back over to traditional pans/bolts.
Interesting
I wanted to trade my Mustang V-6 in for a Mustang GT. But the plastic oil and transmission pans are deal breakers for me.
Don’t you have to reset computer in truck
Yes that is the last step
Where’s the money shot?!
LOL!!
Wow a plastic drain plug built for tough!!!
Unbelievable!!!
Yeah it makes no sense
Seriously?a plastic drainplug?a splash screen with 4 bolts and a sideways filter that is hard to reach? You would think oil changes would be getting easier not harder.at least they still use a normal metal filter.
Yeah this one is strange!
They intend that you replace the entire plastic pan as well, Ford stated they are a one time use. Why are these new vehicles a joke?
Well that’s just dandy!
FORD: lets make the oil pan and train plug plastic.. 🤦♂️
Yeah, they were definitely cutting corners on that move!
I thought that too, but the plastic actually allows for faster heat transfer to the atmosphere. Not trying to be a know it all, just something I learned recently.
@@jsmith1156 Yes, that's right, plus it's recycled plastic and it's lighter than metal
Here in the rust belt we prefer plastic, changing a rusted out oil pan is an expensive or time consuming job
I would never buy any vehicle with a plastic oil pan and plastic plug that would need to be replaced. What was Ford thinking?
Yeah it's a weird design
Bro forgot the electronic oil reset to complete the process 😃
Oh yeah !
Drain plug not built ford tough!

Who ever designed the drain plug was on crack
Yeah it’s crazy!!
If you break the tab there is 2 tabs it works putting in second tab as the lock. No need to buy a new one with one broken tab.
Yeah I kept the broken one as a back up. Thanks for watching
crazy how a modern pickup can be such a piece of junk compared to the old pickups. plastic oil pan and plastic drain plug!??? poor ol henry ford is rollin in his grave
Yeah they seem like they have slipped in quality, but this engine is great for both performance and fuel economy
This is a piss poor design courtesy of Ford engineering. Each year the plug location changes and you have to replace the plug after 10 service intervals. Changing the oil on these after they are warmed up makes a huge mess because some year models the sway bar is in the way or other years the oil hits the front right inside tire.
Yeah definitely a poor design
Bout 12 minutes longer than necessary but thanks.
"You cant rush Art"
It recommends a synthetic blend motor oil...what a joke
Oh?
@Myksgarage what I'm saying is your owners manual said that ..i read that just before you faded it out..that 3.5 echo boost is one of the worst engines as far as wearing out oil..so why in the world would ford recommend synthetic blend whe it can tear up 100% synthetic oil.i would recommend oil only guaranteed on the bottle to last 20k or 25k(amsoil signature) with your engine or the 2.8..I wouldn't leave the oil in 20k miles but at least I would be sure that it is the best oil available at any price
Where's your jack stands? No way I'd trust those plastic ramps!
I trust them, they hold 10,000lbs each
@@Myksgarage Check out some videos of them failing.
The solid one piece ramps are fantastic
@@troywilliams8659 never seen a solid one

All these cheap plastic parts is almost enough to change my mind about buying a new F150. Ford should be ashamed of this cheap garbage.
Yeah it Ford was trying to save a few bucks on this one
What? The filler is right under the engine belt? What a idiot design, if someone accidentally break the belt while changing the filler? Damn Ford
Yeah it’s an odd location
Myks Garage good job, also there are owners who change the plastic yellow plug into a metal one, says it might help with longevity, you may try that next time:)
@@Myksgarage You are SO patient with all these idiotic comments
Break the belt while changing the oil filter?? YOU should not be allowed within a mile of a motor with thinking like that. Give your head a shake man............ good Lord
@@jtomtl The plastic plug is durable and is not an issue. It comes off easy and goes back on easy. It seals up a hole, it has no stress on it........ stay away from motors
That Oil Plug is a piss poor design. I prefer a metal bolt and it does not have a bottom plug so oil goes everywhere. you have to deflect the oil with your hand. Such a mess.
Yes it is a bad design, I’ve been hearing newer trucks don’t have this?
Thank you
👍
Is the oil pan plastic?
It appears to be plastic, kinda strange
