Aleksey Igudesman used to play together with Daisy Jopling and Tristan Schulze in a trio for 2 violins a cello called Triology. Their second CD was called "Who killed the Viola Player". Igudesman write a piece for it called "I Shot the Viola Player, but I didn't shoot the cellist". For the CD presentation Tristan Schulze wrote "Resurrection of the Viola Player" to be played by Julian Rachlin on the viola. This is the very first piece that Julian every played on the viola and he had to learn it for memory because he did not know the viola cliff well enough at the time!

I am playing all violin repertoire on my Viola too. Because I actually like the Viola sound better but want to play my favourite violin music all the same. And anyway it's good practice for both. If you play Bach's 2. partita on the Viola first, it is so much easier on the violin.
Did you add a 5th string or do you transpose when needed?

For the ones who don't get it: In the music world people who play the Viola are usually taken as people who weren't good enough at Violin, as Violas only have a few easy notes in any classical piece, for the purpose of accompanying the Violins. Now Aleksey decided to go bold by writing a piece that's not only as hard as it can get for any Viola player, but also letting the Violins play the few notes that a Viola usually plays to accompany the Violins. Hope this helped get it! I laughed myself dead watching this genuine Comedy. P.S.: The Viola player in this video is actually a Violin player, who switched to a Viola just for this peace ;)
It is not true that violas only have a few notes 'in any classical piece' or that they are played by people who cannot play the violin. There are classical concertos for solo viola and very virtuoso pieces for this instrument, by the way much more difficult than the music in this video. Playing the viola is more difficult than playing the violin because it's bigger, the position is more unnatural, and it's more difficult to get sound out, especially on the C string. It is a very simple physical matter
Rachlin doubles on viola and violin. He's not solely a violin player.
