I'm sure the ducks at least knew what a gutter is
Eh eh eh!!! You heard it, T!!! I said those ducks mean more to you than AJ ever did.
@Billy Batts You ever get tested for tourettes?
It's odd in a way, but those ducks were only in one episode, but carried such importance for the rest of the show.
Socrates ova here...
The ducks were forgotten. The bird feeduh however was unforgettable

They even made it into the pinball.
What’s interesting is Tony always enforces that crying is weakness and this is the only time I remember him crying correctly me cause I’m probably wrong
I think that the ducks represented what little innocence and child-like wonder and happiness was left in Tony.
I raise chickens, and seeing the little babies just come over to you and waddle around you, chirping, gives you such a warm feeling.
These little animals don't have the corruption of mankind, they don't judge you or ask you things. They're just there, happy that you're with them.
I can sort of relate to Tony. I've seen some traumatising stuff and its really made me dislike people I'd much rather spend time with my cats. I love animal shows and I can really understandTony's love for them everyone around him has an ulterior motive they all want something from him whereas the animals trust him and even show him love and affection and all they want in return is the same
And then we eat them.
@@rman52 ...who eats ducks lmfao? I mean sure, we eat animals. You are 100% correct. Though, I think this scene was meant to show the familial aspect of life and how it's basically the most important thing, The fact that these ducks trusted Tony enough to mate and have children in his pool, and then, when the time was right, depart... I think directly communicates to Tony that innocence is real and worth PROTECTING. IDK that's just my two cents.
@@ghostsade3 I agree with your points. But there is also the psychopaths pattern of feeling love for animals. And nothing for people.
@@rman52 that's not being a psychopath, that's just being smart lol
Crazy how guys like Tony and Bobby use things like “ducks” and “model trains” as a way to feel childlike innocence just enough to clear their minds and escape their depressing realities.
Good point; Bobby's "He don't care." (last line?) means a lot more in light of that. Sometimes the Sopranos writing is so brilliant, that I wonder if some of the brilliance was actually intentional.
in bobby's case it could also just be mild autism. trains are a very common hyperfixation in neurodivergent adults.

In retrospect, I think this is the saddest scene in the entire show. We see that there really was some goodness - even childlike innocence - in Tony. But like the ducks who came then flew away, it was all so fleeting. And that was Tony's life, both in terms of the environment he grew up in and the choices he made.
Oh, take it easy
Oh wow, man - I think you nailed it. Thank you.
That's why he told his family to think of the good times

In some alternate universe, Tony wakes up from his coma, decides he wants out, retires to a horse farm upstate, and lives the rest of his life happy and fulfilled.

He decides he wants out, but then his Boss, Eugene Pontecorvo, tells him he can't retire.

A main theme of the show is upbringing and environment don't just influence your life, it downright DICTATES it. Tony, who was a sweet and intelligent kid filled with compassion was irredeemably damaged by his parental and cultural influence never really had a choice of a happy life.
And what's worse we get to see he and Carmela pass that on to AJ and Meadow, AJ being sweet and Meadow being very intelligent, by the end of season 6 we see how both of these qualities are lost as AJ turned into a brute and Meadow who starts in season1 as someone who calls out Tony's hypocrisy to a someone who echo's Tony's rhetoric about society being unjust against italian americans and wiseguys, and despite all her ambitions reduced to Carmela's path of a empty housewife.
That is what made the ending so fulfilling, it is heavily implied that Tony got whacked, but the ambiguity makes you wonder if it would make a difference at all whether he lives through that or not, his destructive lifestyle is destined for misery, maybe he dies there maybe he dies from another backstabbing, or maybe he outlive all other mob guys in his misery and loneliness, the outcome is irrevelant.

Gandolfini hadn't quite figured out Tony at this point. He's almost a completely different character in Melfi's office here.
Exactly. The show almost had that Goodfellas-style comedic satire to it. The narrations, the music to accompany the moods of the scenes. It’s all very Scorsese-ish. I’m really glad it developed its own style and broke away from this cornier version by Season 2

Nostradamus! quackimodo's the hunchduck of Notre dame...
I can understand. He grew a bond with them and it's totally understandable that he was sad when they left.
As someone who's lost so many pets, from death, running away, and so much more, I can empathize with Tony and his panic attacks. "At first it felt like Ginger Ale on my skull" is such a perfect way to describe the feeling of a panic attack.
They are all so annoyed with him instead of leaving him his 5 minutes of joy in his day
He didn’t really care about them, can you blame the kids?
@@MsTinkerbelle87Tony made sure his kids were not raised like his mother raised him. A cynical, consistently negative environment with every action judged and zero hope while trying to please his mother. Tony did not want his kids, and his son especially to become like himself. A cold, broken, antisocial individual who thrives on violence and criminal behaviour. But Tony struggles with his associates leading to frustration and conflict, and his sexual gratification with cheating with other women. Deep down, Tony wanted his kids the best. Tony was playful with his son, playing games, going on boats, father-son moments for Anthony Jr to remember. Tony lacked anything with his mother. His mother guilt-tripped him for raising him, and would project the subject. A bottomless black hole with no happiness regardless how positive something maybe. Tony made sure his kids never grew up in that environment to feel unloved, unproud, judged and invalid.
I wonder if Richie could have made use of that ramp if those ducks in fact didn't like it of course

Can relate to this sort of. I am not a fan of spiders but a couple of years ago, a black and white spider built a beautiful web on one of my porch columns near my front door. I named her Miss Spider from “James and the Giant Peach” because she was a striped black and white spider too. Every morning when I left for work in the early mornings she was gone and would return in the evenings to sleep. Like I said, not a fan of spiders but she minded her business AND there were hardly any bugs flying around my porch light during the evenings because she was THAT spider; didn’t have to clumsily unlock my door to get in the house in a panic. I would even say goodnight to her when she was on her web as I came in for the evening. She was there for about a month until a storm blew through and she was gone forever. Didn’t have a panic attack but I was a little sad. Hope she lives a long life and that she’s okay, wherever she is. Thank you for keeping other bugs out of my house, Miss Spider.

The ducks were an escape for Tony. An escape from the life he led. At least that's what I think .
They reminded him of the innocence he used to have but lost so long ago.
I don't think it's as complex as this. Sometimes you get joy from simple things. Nature is simple yet very interesting.
If Tony felt more relax with the ducks; why doesn’t he adopt one?
Thise were wild ducks 🦆, domestic ducks wouldn't mean the same.
capturing ducks would probably make em feel bad since it wouldn't be the same. they're here against their will like tonys family in America. (since they think America hates italian Americans).
There is something more meaningful about wild animals coming to you as opposed to just adopting domestic ones. Theres something genuine about it.
- You should have dealt with that duck situation the minute it first happened. You should have sent a clear-cut signal: You mess with Tony Soprano's pool...
