  • It's time to get this New Yorker up and running after sitting for so many years. She was last tagged in 2005, and now she's finally here I want to breathe new life in to her. Does she have the energy though....?

    My father had a 69 imperial coupe with an original 440 and 727 TorqueFlite automatic when I was a teenager. To start it we would pump it three times and stop halfway on the third pump. That would normally set the choke on the old carters. If it didn’t fire off right away we would pump like crazy to get the pressure up in the lines. Hearing that Newport run and hearing that 440 go brought back great memories. Keep it up!

    My dad has a 65 newport that id like to play with. I remember riding in it when i was very young. Its been off the road since 1994 or so. A couple summers ago we dragged it out of the weeds and up to the house..thats a start i guess!

      🤣🤣🤣 Brilliant!! At least you've started 😁😁😁 I've just torn down the engine for a rebuild. She's filthy inside. I'll be releasing the video soon when I've edited it. Keep an eye out for it and hopefully it may help you out 👍🏻 Good luck with the 65 Chris 😃👍🏻 Julian SGG.

    I never doubted for a moment you'd get her running. She's a mid 1960's C-body Mopar, of course she'll run. On the charging issue, it might also be that electro mechanical voltage regulator. It works kind of like the points. I replaced my voltage regulator with a unit that's fully electronic but hooks up the same as the original. Works great.

    • @SortedGeorgeGarage
      @SortedGeorgeGarage  Před rokem +1

      I've ordered a new voltage regulator Pat, just waiting for its arrival. Hopefully this will cure the problem 👍🏻

      @@SortedGeorgeGarage If that doesn't work, check the brushes in the alternator. They are a wear item, though they do take a long time to wear out.

    Wow, I just stumbled on this. Spent much of last year sorting out my '65 New Yorker here in UK. Front suspension mainly, brakes, lights and melty under-dash wiring due to the well known 'Ammeter problem' where all the power runs through the ammeter in the dash and back into the engine bay. This car may also have the largest front ash tray of any car ever made, or ash-receiver as Chrysler called it.

    • @SortedGeorgeGarage
      @SortedGeorgeGarage  Před rokem

      Ash receiver 🤣🤣🤣
      Yeah they're huge aren't they!!! They're about the size of a parcel shelf on a Mini 😁😁😁
      Oh the wonderful Ammeter! "Let's run ALL the power through the dash before anywhere else" idea and burn the car to the ground if there's a fault. Not good! There is a volt meter hack you can do to an ammeter using the original slot in the dash, I came across it the other day on social media. You just change the rear guts of the gauge for a volt meter. Or just disconnect it altogether and just add a volt meter. Much safer! How long have you had the '65?

      @XenonJohnD Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@SortedGeorgeGarage 3 years now. Bypassed the ammeter but would be good to fit a voltmeter at some point. I have one of those digital ones right now that plugs into the cigar lighter ! Not very period correct.

    17:22 must have twilight sentinel headlights for them to come on with the key.
    there should be a red oil light and a green cold light. I had to reach up under and replace mine. I think 158 and a 57 bulb

    Outstanding !!!!!! So many questions: How did this motor end up in the UK at the hands of an Englishman? How does said Englishman George have so much expert knowledge? The different styles or method of approach getting this gem to work UK/USA are very interesting. USA there would be boxes of parts ordered, George (UK) methodically tests and checks! I know the master break cylinder will need replacing, I wonder how that is going to happen? George you have a beautiful mopar 440, its in great hands enjoy it, video it, I enjoy your methodical style!!

      Thanks Imjin. I've been doing Mopars for around 20 years. Alot of knowledge gained through experience/friends/Internet etc.
      Hopefully you'll watch the series on this car, there's quite a few videos on this car now. Subscribe my friend and come back for more 😁👍🏻 SGG

    The positive battery cable replacement connector at the battery looks quite suspicious. I would take that apart and clean the cable wire strands and the mating surfaces in the connector and reattach. The starter might not be getting adequate current through that connection. Also you might try loosening the distributor and rotating it slightly one way ot the other in case distributor advance issues may be part of the problem.

    • @SortedGeorgeGarage
      @SortedGeorgeGarage  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching Joe. I have new battery cables for her now, and you're right about the cables and transfer of power, but the old ones were ok just for getting her going for the 1st time. I want to replace them due to the corrosion on them, as I have no doubt the corrosion now goes up the sleeve quite some way due to their age 👍🏻

    Check the alternator for charging not whether the battery is charging. Poor connections, grounds... could be the problem.
    Anyway check from the alternator to the voltage regulator to the battery.

    • @SortedGeorgeGarage
      @SortedGeorgeGarage  Před rokem

      Thanks Grahame, I've been doing other bits first to her, but I shall be checking through the wiring soon. I have new battery cables etc. to go on, so I'll do that, then chase down the charging issue. Grounds are good though 👍🏻 Thanks for watching Grahame, I appreciate it 😊👍🏻 SGG
