The tin foil is insulation for the valley pan is to keep heat off the intake. Will help prevent vapour lock on hot days. I imagine if you get a rebuild gasket set or something along those lines, it will probably come with new valley pan insulation. The whole job you're embarking on will be worth it in the long run for peace of mind. It's unfortunate about the fuel pump, aside from the shipping costs going back, it's hard to get quality parts these days.

I agree Patrick, you have to go careful with what you buy. To much cheapo chinesium metal out there now. Thanks for the heads up with the foil pad - my suspicions were right 😁👍🏻 Someone else commented on this, and apparently they were a factory install 😳

What complications! But look on the bright side 😊! You got a great aerobic workout cleaning the engine bay, plus you were able to exercise those arm & shoulder muscles scraping off the engine itself. You just about wore out the putty knife, lol! 😄 Nicely shot and edited video.

Thankyou Robert. Don't worry, the putty knife didn't suffer too badly, there's still a little life left in it 🤣🤣 I've just stripped the engine and all I can say is Wow! 😲 Video coming soon 😉

Good luck with that master cylinder! I had a remanufactured cylinder fail in the first 1,000 miles. Bad news was that I was coming off a highway and had about 1/8 mile (0.2 kms) to work the emergency brake to a complete stop from 55 mph (88.5 kmh). Good news is that I knew what to do and had no traffic around me.

Your problems with this engine reminded me of a story a friend told me, he bought a 1970's Chevy Camaro and it seemed to run ok, until he changed the oil, and then it started burning oil like crazy! It turned out that the previous owner had shoved some engine oil thickener (STP?) into the engine to reduce the oil consumption. In other words, the rings were worn out, and he had to buy another engine. Hope your problem isn't that bad. I am looking forward to the next video!

Thankyou Alan. She's stripped down now. Just got to sort out the video now 😁😁
That's a cruel thing to do on someone with the STP thing 😡

My brother had a 1968 Road Runner with the 383 engine.....when he had the dealer overhaul engine ...there was tin foil on the intake valley cover when I was picking up the car for my brother so I asked what the deal was.....mechanic told me they had the foil from factory to block the heat of the hot oil on vslley cover heating intake manifold....apparently the foil was painted when they painted engines so it was not obvious. Whether this was normal just on the 383 / 335 hp engine or others too...?

Aha!! My suspicions were right! Thankyou Neil 😃👍🏻 There's a thin flat plate under the front of the intake. I'm guessing this is to hide the pad from view as I can't see any other purpose for it 👍🏻

Rock Auto always charges shipping to return parts. It's a bit of a scam. Their shipping from the USA to Canada is ridiculous.

Sorted George is just an exclamation that my wife used to say when we were dating. It's a bit like awesome, brilliant, fab, superb, wicked, or like 'Bill & Ted' with "Excellent!!" When thinking of a channel name the phrase came to mind and "Sorted George Garage" was born 😁😁😁 (well 1st was Sorted George, I added the "Garage" last year) 😁👍🏻

mine has that tin foil I thought it was a hero sandwich from 1982 that someone heated and forgot.
most that oil might be the valve cover gaskets. mine were dried up and split. I tore them off and noticed a grey sludge in the galley and pieces of a factory valve seal so I will have to get that sorted. the pcv comes off through the bottom of the "can" I managed to get off and soak in gas. the valve covers are filthy inside so I' soaked them too. I got the mahle cork gaskets and all my parts from the same rockauto. the parts places in town are out of their minds and are double and triple the price of rockauto. my covers have studs and nuts, most are seized to the stud and maybe a torch might help but I just put them back the way there were.
my transmission is leaking from the pan gasket so I got a date at the shop to service that and I will get him to put a 1/4" ntp plug in the rear axle housing right at the back edge where its flat. good times!

Hey 12321, I watched that little video link you sent me... love your ride. Stunning condition!!
Apparently (I've just found out) this was a factory install of these pads to help prevent heat soak from valley to intake and prevent vapour lock 👍🏻
