I rewatched Doflamingo's fight with Law recently and one of the things that I noticed is how Doflamingo treats Law like an object, not like a proper opponent. He doesn't use normal attacks against Law. Instead Doffy grabs his wrists, tears his clothes, crushes him, chokes him, shoots him multiple times while he's already severely hurt and can't defend himself, and uses his string and Trebol's goo to immobilize him and make him feel helpless and dehumanized as much as possible.
Doffy treats Law like a bratty kid treats his toys. No wonder Law has trouble fighting back. He was terrified, embarrassed, and in excruciating pain. Just how Doffy likes his victims.

He showed genuine sadness/regret when Monet and Vergo were about to die for him, got huffy when a rival pirate attacked Law and Baby 5 as kids and also saved them from that guy instantly (instead of letting the weaklings die for example). He also seems distressed immediately after shooting his father and brother before he regains his composure. I think he's intelligent enough to understand that there is something wrong with him, he's aware of his own insanity but will still always choose himself and his own ambition over others.

He didn't just intend to use Doffy, he's still using Doffy to get the benefits of being his right hand man as you mention. He's not ordering around or planting ideas into present Doffy or the people around present Doffy so yeah he's not manipulating him anymore, but he's still piggybacking off of him for those benefits. iirc he's Sugar's body guard or smth and beyond that I don't really know what he does for the family, and yet he still reaps a massive portion of the family's earnings. I don't really think he "became" subservient to Doffy after he failed at his maybe intended use of Doffy, I think he was planning to piggyback off of Doffy from the very beginning the moment he realized the potential Doffy had, and he succeeded there. Him piggybacking off of Doffy's efforts does not invalidate Doffy's connections or strengths or anything, rather it shows how blinded Doffy was by his own anger that he didn't even notice he was getting used and how much of a manipulator Trebol was by fanning that rage and empowering Doffy.

I think one of the most memorable things about Doffy wasn't anything in Dressrosa, but rather his speech in Marineford. here's this flambouyant Warlord who you know pretty much nothing about except he's SCAWWY and then he starts spitting straight BARS about how "There is no winner in war" and "the side of Justice is the side that Wins". it's a lesson i've seen in many other shows and stories, but for some reason when it's Doffy staring down a literal WAR between the largest pirate group and the ENTIRE FUCKING NAVY, it hits different and you really start to think about it. ESPECIALLY once you realize that Luffy is hopelessly outclassed and outmatched by pretty much everyone on the entire island over the rank of Commodore or Rear Admiral.

When looking at the world, it really comes down to those who are the masters of violence & manipulation that get to the top. The whole idea of the world being based on integrity & goodwill is nothing more than wishful thinking. I wished what he said wasn't true of the real world but it is for what it is sadly.

The marines are righteous? Those views changed as often as the tides. Kids who have never known peace and kids who have never known war have **_different values._** Those who stand at the top can decide what evil is."* And then *"Justice will prevail? Of course, it will! Whoever prevails **_becomes_** JUSTICE!"*

People most often notice the people with the greatest power, e.g. Whitebeard, Kaido, Big Mom, etc. The characters with supreme power act differently than the characters like Doflamingo who are just a step from supreme power. Not once do you see Kaido ask one of his men to die for him. That's because he knows he has the power to carry everything by himself. Doflamingo is acutely aware of his own vulnerabilities and doesn't hesitate to use his crew as sacrificial pawns. The desperation to reach that highest tier of power drives Doflamingo to do some truly terrifying things.

by no means do I think doflamingo is a good person or that I buy into his whole pity party. HOWEVER, I think by comparing corazon's outcome vs doflamingo your missing out on a whole lot.
One, siblings who grow up in trauma dont always cope the same. Different coping makes different people.
Two, doflamingo is older than corazon. though a two year age gap doesn't seem like that big of a difference, it is. Especially when it comes to children. two years can be the difference in setting core values and morals in children.
three, corazon was saved by sengoku who became a positive influence on corazon and gave him a home and place to belong. What did doflamingo get? a creepy group of people who groom him into a dangerous individual and fuel his sadistic side.
by no means do I think someone as selfish and unsympathetic as doflamingo deserves much sympathy, but by no means was doflamingo evil by nature. he was created by circumstance and influence. To me comparing the two's outcomes is like wondering why two siblings from an abusive home aren't the same when one got therapy and the other was told to fend for themself. of course, one is less well-rounded and well-adjusted than the other.
Was a great listen! just thought i'd add my two cents.

      @__Butters__ Před 6 měsíci +2

@@mastermarkus5307 I mean doflamingo IS a monster. Cora knows this, however i think the most important take away is that he was a MADE monster. He didnt spawn that way (not in my opinion at least) I think that's what's so compelling about doflamingo. He is evil. he does evil things. But i think to say he was born that way is dismissing so many influences, not to mention he also lacked positive influences he looked toward. With the exception of his mother, who was there?
Besides, he would be far less compelling of a villain if he was inherently just evil to begin with. He is interesting because (though we may not agree with his reasoning) we can see the progression how he got from a to b. Lacking that, his character would be quite the villain, sure, but far less human of a monster. He is compelling, because he is still human. Thats what makes him all the more horrifying.

The most terrifying thing in the Dressrosa arc for me is not Doflamingo: it's SUGAR and her powers.
Imagine being trapped in a toy body that moves against your will, unable to express yourself through words or gestures.
Imagine being forced into slave labor until your body gives out and you can't move anymore, and then thrown into a dumpster, never to be seen again, forever trapped in that broken body (even a release of death is denied to you, as that body has no need to feed and doesn't age).
And worst of all, imagine going through all that despair while knowing that no one will ever help you, because you were erased from everyone's minds, including the minds of those who enslaved you.
Getting ripped to shreds inside Doffy's string cage sounds heavenly by comparison. There are, indeed, fates far worse than death.

For me the fascinating thing about Don Flamingo is how aware he is about the rest of the world and the human condition. I think that maybe luffy and the strawhats will show us the power of dreams and smiles and so on. But if Oda decides at some point to also explain how you can't just erase the bad side of people, he will do it rhrough a Doffy speech.

I never stopped to think about it, but I hate that I can mildly relate to Doflamigo. I was a older, but still a child when my parents made a decision I feel was very irresponsible. it involved them quitting jobs and moving to another part of the state, and that decision has led to us being in a, lets say not so favorable position when it comes to money and being to care for ourselves. We moved so my Dad could run a restaurant, something he's always wanted to do. but because of his disdain for his job and desires, he jumped at an opportunity without hesitation not knowing what he was actually getting into. to make a long story short. My uncle bought a cafe and offered my dad a job. But the previous owner withheld the fact he owed back taxes on the cafe and it shut down only after two years. Now nearly 16 years later we live in a shitty house that costs more than it should and were struggling.
Now to come back to Doflamingo and me. through no action of his own he went through some terrible shit, and many people can, myself included understand what thats like. No matter my adamant protests to not wanting to move, I was utterly ignored. And unlike Doflamingo, My parents still think their decision was completely okay and it pisses me off to no end. But here's were my sympathies for Doflamingo end. while It is my parents actions that have put me where I am right now, its still my fault I haven't attempted to improve my situation. I can get mad at them for the initial choice, at the end of the day as a grown man now, its my fault im still here. I could have done better in school or a many myriad of things to leave but I haven't. Doflamingo can place blame wherever he wants, but the here and now is solely on him. I'm aspiring to be an author and this line of thinking inspired a character and one of his quotes is one of my favorite things i've written and I think it works well for Doflamingo. "Many never get to chose their starting line. But what happens in their race and how it ends is theirs to chose."

Don’t underestimate how much a job you hate can drain you mentally as well as physically. I mean, ever since I was a kid I wanted to become an illustrator. Yet at 42 I still haven’t reached that goal. My job pays the bills but after 16 years of mindnumbing work I can tell you I’m completely creatively drained. If I even have the energy to draw, which isn’t often these days, the best I can do is some fanart shit. And that just leads to more negativity and self-doubt. I basically feel trapped with no way to go. So I can definitely empathise with your parent’s decision.
I mean, if you had a family and you support them with a job that pays the bills, but sucks the life out of you, and then you get your chance to fulfill your dream of becoming an author, wouldn’t you take that chance? Even at the risk of being worse off later on? Would that choice feel irresponsible?
I get what you’re saying absolutely, actions have consequences but unless you have been in the same position, your anger, although certainly understandable from where you’re standing, is a bit misplaced. I’m sure your parents didn’t just make that decision on a whim and thought about it long and hard weighing off the pros and cons before their final decision. Yes, responsibility for your family’s well-being is key, but when you feel trapped in your job, a way out gets very tempting no matter the consequences. (Of course, I’m projecting my own situation on this. I have no idea if your parents were that unhappy with their jobs but if they maintain that they made the right call, I suspect that there was a big issue at play there).

yoooo I've been catching up on your videos after following you on Twitter for some time and these are so so good
I agree wholeheartedly when you stress that One Piece is not about the fights, and the fight between Law and Doffy, which Law very well could have won in normal circumstances, is just proof of how much more nuance and importance the show puts into the dynamics between characters over how good they can hit each other

Awesome video and I love that there's still discussion about Doffy. He's my favourite One Piece character by far, but I equally understand why he is hated by many.
Though I love your interpretation, I feel like you were missing some important points. While it is absolutely true that Doffy is a master manipulator and essentially uses everyone around him for his own gain, there is a twisted tragedy to this side of him. He is undoubtedly extremely traumatised by his past and, unlike Corazon who was taken in by Sengoku, never had the chance to actually heal from it. Every character with a tragic backstory usually has a positive mentor figure who shows them that there's good in the world. That wasn't the case for Doffy, instead he became a victim of Trebol who used his trauma to shape him into the monster we know him as today. In many ways, Doffy is just as manipulated as every other member in his crew. I also feel like the whole "family" thing is a huge coping mechanism for Doffy, because he clearly cares for the people he actually considers his "family", at least to a certain degree.
I think Doffy is a very complicated character to discuss and there probably isn't one right way to interpret his character. I just love the attention to detail Oda put into him and that after all these years he's still a relevant character because his impact on the series as a whole was just huge.
