This song was very famous in late 80s and early 90s. There was a social uprising later in 1998, leading to the president - who had ruled for 35 years - stepping down. This song didnt cause the uprising, the economic crisis did lead to the movement. But it really captures the feelings among young people and the picture of what happened back then. Indonesia was under a regime, military was very powerful, the presidents and people surrounding him had ruled for more than 3 decades. There was no real elections, and there was a Subversive Law that enabled government to ban a media or arrest anyone opposing them.
