I have been a widow now for two years. Things hubby always took care of are starting to need attention. Thank you so much for this easy to understand video on how to make this fix. Took me longer to get the dremel out and set with a grinding bit than it did to do the wee bit of grinding I suppose the house now being 10 years old is settling a little bit. Such a relief as it was getting harder and harder to turn.
Thanks for posting this. I watched the video and read the comments. I had the same problem as Mike Dunn and reading his comments and watching the video gave me the courage to take apart the whole thing and now my door works again!
Thanks so much! My deadbolt had stopped working totally. I tried the graphite and that didn't help. I was about to take the mechanism to the locksmith as you mentioned but then watched further and tried re-aligning the screws and that worked like a charm! I'm really happy I was able to fix it so easily thanks to your help!
Thanks, just saved me from buying a new lock. Today I inserted my key and the bolt would not turn. I did use some lubricant (ACF-50) and pulled the key slightly out while trying to turn - eventually I got it working. Then I kept turning the lock and everything to seem have come to where they supposed to be. Great success!
Hello and thank you for your helpful video ! I had trouble all through winter and your suggestion of loosening the screws and moving the cylinder abit for better alignment did the trick !! super !!
The 1000th liked! I tried lubing this deadbolt with my DRY 3-1 one stuff I use for my casement windows-not carbon, it just never dawned on me to take apart the deadbolt itself. Two screws - two sprays- DONE! SO SIMPLE! THANK YOU!
Thank you for sharing this information...after using the graphite lubricant, my keys turn the cylinder like “butta” !!..I get a little more life out of the lock and shared your handy tip with my daughters!!
This is the second home in which czcams.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).
As far as the graphite, get a powdered graphite and not the stuff he's using here. No mess, no black gunk and nothing that stains. Just got some yesterday at Home Depot for just over $2, quick and easy fix, it made the key slide right in with no hesitation.
I used my trumpet valve oil to lube up the inside and it works perfectly now lolol. This video helped me take the thing apart and put it back together again confidently tho so thank u!!!
Thank you! The deadbolt lock on my apartment front door wouldn't retract completely and I was stuck inside. I could turn it only about half way before it would stick and not turn anymore. I tried loosening the screws and wiggling the lock as I turned it just like you instructed. After a few tries I managed to get the bolt to retract completely. I'm free! It's still sticky so I will probably have the property management replace it.
The bolt gets stuck 2/3 in as we use the inside knob, twist. No apparent screw heads. They must be under ornamental cover/plate but can’t find slot to pop it off.
Extend the bolt and look carefully at all 4 sides of it. If rubbing, it will show as the bolt surface will be scratched shiny. File the strike plate to match the location on the bolt and if necessary, the wood inside. One issue: If you grind much of the inside long length, you weaken the strike plate's ability to resist a forced door entry.
I have a new lock and new striker plate, that was replaced last fall . That locksmith enlarged around the hole and added several screws. I didn’t replace the wood door . The deadbolt opens easily with and without the key - could it be the striker plate?? I have to sometime slam the door to get it to close. Deadbolt hasn’t been opened since the fall . Water gets in from along the threshold (settling?). It works sometimes, but not others . Would Graphite lubricant help ??. And to which part? Thanks
I have a deadbolt with keys on both side s. The inside works fine with the key but outside doesn’t. I think a friend might have damaged it forcing a wrong key but not sure. What should I do?
We just bought a house and I have 6 deadbolts to change on the outside and none of the doors on the inside (or outside) close properly. Thanks for the tips! Hoping to not have to call a locksmith.
door is closed and LOCKED. Both key and or the little knob (switch inside) just turn and bolt does not retract. So I took out 2 screws from inside. and exposed it. I turned the mechanism and its turns but bolt stays extended into jam it doesnt retract.. HOW do I get it to retract it without trashing door? Any help would be appreciated. ...I think its the same thing DoGon is asking below.?!?
any chance you know how to get deadbolt to retract is cam slot just spins. Both key and thumb knob turn the cams and cam slot spins but doesnt retract deadbolt. Door is closed keep in mind. Im able to open lock up from inside...just dont know how to retract deadbolt ..once i get that retracted im golden ;-) Help Please anyone?!?
I am an elderly lADy on my own my garage has a deadlock it hasnt been replaced in 26yrs I locked it the other day now I cant get in the garage it wont unlock at all n feels like something loose or broken when the key goes in What can I do to open it without damage as I am in a rental ps I have arthritic hands
I have an ancient Schlage double dead bolt lock on the front door, and the key would lock it fine, but it was a bitch to open, and I was afraid of bending the key. If I twisted hard enough, the lock would suddenly release with a loud snap, and I could open the door. I took the whole thing apart, and the trouble was with the mechanism that moved the bolt in and out. I applied generous amounts of lube to the sleeve holding the bolt, and worked it back and forth. It eventually moved freely. I suspect there was some corrosion where the bolt went through the sleeve holding it.
What type of door do you have? Mine was an outdoor gate where the deadbolt wouldn't move. I did the following: 1. WD-40 into the lock ideally with a straw nozzle to get into small places 2. Spray into deadbolt area where it goes into the door 3. Hammer very lightly around the keyhole, lock, maybe gently with the key in the lock tap the back of the key with a hammer gently to transmit a little bit of force to the locking mechanism, if something has knocked out of place inside the lock. 4. This is the hard bit, and depends if you can see any part of the deadbolt. Try to get something thin and metal like an Allen key nudge the deadbolt up and down using the hook part of the Allen key. See if it gives you play to spray some more WD-40 into the deadbolt hole. See if you can insert the Allen key in between the deadbolt and the locking plate see if you can wedge the deadbolt back. Good luck
i have a problem. i picked a deadbolt lock andbit successfully picked open and shut for me, however the key doesn't work in there now :/ OH NO! what do i do?! also other keys aren't working.
I realize this is an old post, but if it's only happening when the hardware is mounted, and if you're certain the deadbolt is properly aligned, and has sufficient clearance, you might try loosening the screws on the thumbturn side a little, and seeing if that helps. Over tight screws can result in a latch being hard to turn. Also, for the latch on the edge of the door itself, did you use the screws that came with the lock, or longer ones? If those screws are too long, and penetrate into the larger hole, they could interfere with the mechanism. Without being able to physically visit your location, those would be the things I would recommend checking first.
Hey I completely fucked up my parents deadbolt smart key. they bought a kwikset smart key set I tried messing around with re keying on the deadbolt and didn't follow the instructions properly. so now I can lock it from the inside but we cannot use the key on the deadbolt. they key was working perfectly fine locking and unlocking from the outside. till I was messing around with the key and key tool. now I can't move the key left or right won't budge. The instructions don't mention this problem at all what do I need to do?

Removed lock plate, sprayed the graphite onto the stuck sliding mechanism. Fixed it. Saved me the cost of a locksmith. Thanks!

I used my trumpet valve oil to lube up the inside and it works perfectly now lolol. This video helped me take the thing apart and put it back together again confidently tho so thank u!!!
Thank you. Just needed to loosen the screws and adjust the position a little. All good now

Graphite powder works really well!
Thanks for this very informative video. Now I know what to do for my deadbolt on h front door.
Thanks, worked very well.

Thanks, you solved my problem.
I have a new lock and new striker plate, that was replaced last fall .
That locksmith enlarged around the hole and added several screws.
I didn’t replace the wood door .

Would Graphite lubricant help ??.
And to which part?
Thanks

So the part where the key goes in was sticking out, like noticably. What can cause that to happen?
Toucan DIY That accent are you Canadian? Aboot !!! Years of watching South Park....😁
My door has a deadbolt and the key is stuck inside and the door is locked and I can't pull the key. What can I do I need help please.

My deadbolt doesn’t have screws on the inside so how do I take it apart
My key won't turn on the winter. What should I do? I have to use both hands to turn the key. I'm afraid the key will break soon. Help
What about if you locked out n u can’t get in to change the lock
My keys get stuck after I unlocked the door I will try your tips 😊ty
What would you do if the lock mechanism works but the deadbolt doesn't move and is stuck in the locked position?
I have an ancient Schlage double dead bolt lock on the front door, and the key would lock it fine, but it was a bitch to open, and I was afraid of bending the key. My issue with my key is that the original key turns but the new one doesnt turn went back to get the new key re-done but still nothing
So the deadbolt mechanism is broken I think. The door is closed and I can't retract the deadbolt enough to open the door. Ideas??
Exact same issue with me. Any help anyone?

How do you open a deadbolt from the inside without a cover? Mine is stuck and I can't open it
Lucaria Heralinn haha, same problem here, finding nothing
Why can’t you use oil? Can you use a spray?
It's happening on a new one with me. What gives? It happens when everything is installed?

Hey, how did you resolve this issue? I literally just did this about 20 minutes ago.
Im literally doing the same right now.. But i have a deadbolt lock and a smart door behind it.. fuck
New cylinder? Does that mean a NEW KEY⁉️
Graphite is terrible for the lungs. Silicone spray works great. Not messy like graphite
It's a new deadbolt so um pretty sure it doesn't need to be lubed up or new key hole.
Electronic dead bolt
I’m actually stuck in my bedroom rn so I’m pretty fuck lmao welp
have you made it out yet ?
nope my dead body is still there, I'm writing this from the skies bruh.
Damn .... rip bruhhh must be tough , hopefully someday someone can figure it out and at least recover your body and that ps4
Hope so

Just buy a new lock for 20 bucks installs in 5 minutes.
Way way to much talking explaining to much get people lost
