It’s better today. The nhl is trying to protect players from concussions that lead to drug and alcohol addiction, suicide and jail. I’m all for safety. The nhl before 2005 was a violent sport with no concerns for the players health. When’s the last time you had 30 fights in a year and took pain killers every day? Probert just pawed at him. If he'd wanted to hurt him he would glided forward a foot or two and threw bombs. Make no mistake there's no world where Probert doesn't mangle Roenick anytime he wants if he weren't busy creating and following the code. I hated Probert when he played but being, able to go back and watch without bias I see that he easily holds the re ord for the most punches held back when he landed and hurt his opponent, when his opponent wasn't in his league, or turtled(which they almost always did if he got his right free) or turned away or were on the ground or any other vulnerable position. Had he been the one in all those vulnerable positions in that era he'd not have played long. I can't imagine how good he would've been if he wasn't such a calm, mild mannered person.he really struggledtoget up for alot of fights. You can learn see when he was motivated by team responsibility. If it were just someone wanted an ego fight or they wanted to make a name for themselves he wasn't very motivated. If you go back and watch a bunch of his fights it becomes pretty obvious when he really wanted to win and when he just wasn't in it. He won most of the fights he wasn't motivated for but he was pretty well unbeatable when it was for his team. Remember the coward Kevin Maguirre? He tries to beat up Stevie Y and literally lands zero punches but then cowers when its time to pay for it. I would rather have my head blown off than do that. How could you ever show your face as a supposed enforcer after that? He was really motivated but couldn't do much. That was the angriest by far I'd ever seen him. He punches Barrasso when he tried to stop him so Barrasso just backs up and Housley comes over and sees what happened to Barrasso and decides he'll find something to do as far away from Probert as possible. Nobody from the Sabres would even lay a finger on him as he waited for Maguirte. This may be extreme but if he'd kicked Maguirre in the face with his skate it would've been an appropriate punishment. Not just for trying to beat Stevie but for not answering the bell after. Everybody knows if tough guy tires to take out a top skill guy he's gotta answer at the first chance. If you don't ya end up with McSorlyey on the pathetic coward Brashear. Or Steve Moore. All guys not answering the bell.
