The Powerpuff Girls Movie is an American animated superhero film based on the Cartoon Network animated television series of the same name. The film was directed by series creator Craig McCracken. It is a prequel to the series that tells the origin story of how the Powerpuff Girls were created, and how they came to be the defenders of Townsville.

I like it, really awesome origin movie
You guys are so awesome
This was my favorite movie and series as a kid ♥️
The theme song is going strong.

The movie did so badly because only half the audience went to see it. Powerpuff Girls were a hit with boys and girls, but little boys didn't want to go to a "girl movie" or their parents just didn't let them.
It did poorly due to Men In Black II and poor marketing.
apparently the show despite still having a fanbase it had somewhat declined in popularity.
The Sam Raimi Spider-Man film came out that same year and hogged the attention. I only knew of this film's existence because I was an avid viewer of Cartoon Network, where a lot of commercials for the film were shown. I was hyped and went to see it in theaters, and I wasn't disappointed.
This was in your country... (English speaker coutnries) you guys are weird...
The film Bombed due to it being marketed extremely poorly(Thanks to AOL Time Warner) and due to it not including the Rowdyruff Boy Characters. Powerpuff Girls was fairly neo feminist its first several seasons.
Cartoon Network was able to save face though. The DVDs sold very well. And it was promoted heavily and referenced on Adult Swim cartoons like The Brak Show.
I think Doug really wants us to know he has a cat now.
and his humor is becoming a bit dry...
Mikayla Reynolds
Oh really? I thought he has a Mongoose ore something.

Hey I ain't complaining
>The Powerpuff Girls is a Cartoon Network show
>Toonami is on Cartoon Network
>Toonami aired the first couple of Gorillaz videos back in the day
>Ace is now a temporary member of Gorillaz

Sometimes Toonami aired PPG episodes
Also this movie had a Gorillaz reference in it.
Temporary?
Well the creator of Gorillaz is actually a great friend of Craig McCracken
gorillaz was refrenced in the movie
I wish Samurai Jack had ended with a full-length film on this level.
Good news everyone
Same. At least we got a season that finally brought closure.
If you wanna talk technical, Samurai Jack's first 3 episodes (officially dubbed "The Premiere Movie") had a theatrical screening some time 'round late 2017, to commemorate the complete series Blu-Ray boxset.
But the final season was fantastic??
@@slayer45670 Play the Samurai Jack game on PS4, Xbox One and Switch, it has a much better ending to the series.
Put the kitten in every video. No matter how contrived the reason.

SamyulDavis I agree, even if it's only a short cameo. I also would like to see the cat in every video from this point onwards.
Yes! He's so adorable!
Yeah, I mean with all the joke reaction shots typical kitten behavior lends itself to, shouldn't be too hard.
At the very least Chaplin has to play the nostalgia critic if he ever reviews that movie where the guy gets turns into a cat.
Hard to believe The Powerpuff Girls are gonna turn 20 years old this month (same day Mickey Mouse turns 90, as a matter of fact).
I'll forever remember PPG as an unforgettable classic.

All the big eyes are a reference to artist Margaret Keane, known for painting children with big eyes. I believe that's where the idea for the show came from.
So is that why their teacher is called Ms. Keane?

I am a huge PPG fan and I gotta say.... this movie is just great. If you were a fan back then watching this was like a dream.
The movie goes along the tone of the series but it all makes sense.
I believe Doug didn't pay too much attention. He did bring up that scene where they walk around the ciry they destroyed but I am surprised he didn't brought up WHY Buttercup punches the monkey.
They were being pacifist, flying around saving people, but it was just too much.
The gorilla grabbed the puppy and didn't let go, buttercup being the most temperamental got angry and punched him but she immediately started to apologize. Blossom sees this and concludes it's actually the only choice they have. They have to fight. This also settles the whole "Blossom: commander and the leader, Bubbles: She's the joy and laughter. Buttercup: She's the toughest fighter." (Sorry)
I just believe it's a pretty strong scene, we gotta remember they are basically kinder gardeners.
But to be fair he pointed out some legit stuff like the first part of the movie being a little too long even for it's own good. That's fair. I also believe you can cut those scenes in half and get the same result and I agree that it could have been done a bit better since that time wasted could be used to develop the whole story a bit more.
Sorry for the walltext. I love PPG and I love this movie and I will defend it of course.
I earnestly agree with you, on nearly every point you've made.
Unfortunately, this guy makes his income on tearing classics apart. Folks like you and me have to assume the things we love will be insulted by this guy.
If you ever want to talk with someone with a slightly more sincere love of PPG movie, though, hit me up.
Never apologize for explaining yourself. People who are too lazy to read should be the ones apologizing
ryarod There’s also the fact that we have a lot of nostalgia for this series from our childhood that this guy stated he does not.
This is unrelated, but your comment made me remember that "Mega Babies" existed. Totally forgot about that cartoon until you mentioned they're basically kindergarteners. Thanks!
To be fair he made a lot of valid points. I love the Powerpuff Girls, and I watched the movie both in my childhood and recently, but the movie was rather mediocre. It was okay, but I think we could have gotten more out of a Powerpuff movie.
I love this movie so damn much, I remember going to see it in theaters & sneaking around so kids I knew didnt catch me watching it but now IDGAF this is great and the OG powerpuff girls is my top 10 fav animated series of all time.

"It's really weird but really awesome to see this much animate violence in a kid's film again!"
See, Doug gets it! That's why we loved the original. It was obscenely, deliciously violent. So much so, that it becomes fun to see because the show itself is having fun with the display.
Unfortunately though many felt the scenes of destruction were in poor taste due to 9/11 occurring less than a year prior
I guess that’s a core reason why some people must love Princess Mononoke. Great film, and I know its PG-13, but it is also a Studio Ghibli picture, so probably a lotta kids’ parents just let them watch it without much thought, lol
Sugar! Spice! And everything nice! These were the ingredients to make a perfect franchise. But one day, the producers at Cartoon Network accidentally added a secret ingredient: MODERN CULTURE!! Thus, the terrible reboot was born!!

I loved this movie, I was really shocked that it didn't do as well as people hope. It worked as solid introduction to the Powerfuff series and to this day is one of my favorite shows to come from Cartoon Network.
from what I heard it might have been because the show had somewhat declined in popularity at the time the movie was released
@@t_man7259 The movie bombed for two reasons - one, Warner Bros. didn't promote it at all except for on Cartoon Network; two, it opened 4th of July weekend against Men in Black II. It didn't stand a chance.
@@jbwarner8626 And Lilo & Stitch was also a smash hit around the same time
8:18 me too
I personally love this movie. I mean, the show was my childhood so I do recognize the nostalgia blinders I am currently wearing. However, I only saw the movie when I got older and I still loved it.
Whil I do recognize that the movie has pacing issues, I attribute that more to the run time of everything. And, for the first cinematic release by Cartoon Network, I think it did a great job. I mean, I look back and try to think about what they could trim down but all there really is is the tag scene and even then there isn't a while lot to trim there as it was necessary that the girls cause tons of destruction.
It was also necessary to show just how far their naivety ran. They movie takes place in a span shorter than a week. These are innocent little girls who are just starting to learn about the world who, unlike other kids their age, haven't seen any of the darker parts of Townsville or had it affect them.
As for the serious moments, I prefer for programs to take themselves seriously. As said earlier, these are complete innocents who haven't had much explained to them yet. So when all their hard work to fix their mistake creates basically an apocalypse and being turned away by their dad, I'd say that calls for a serious moment. Also, as for going back to the professor, Critic he's their dad and they live him; of course they'll go back! :p
Also, the movie followed continuity from the show which I loved! The main fault of the film, in my eyes, is that it falls into the trap that many movies based on television shows do: They appeal more to fans of the show more than trying to make a film for all audiences. Nothing wrong with that on paper but it is a shame to see an opportunity to bring the franchise to new hights used to make a more complicated episode that is only a movie because it couldn't fit in the usual runtime.
"Followed continuity from the show" They retconned lots of important staples, such as them being unaffected by lava, yet they feared getting burned by an incinerator, and Buttercup's crush on Ace does not appear in the film when they are interrogated, both of which happened in "Buttercrush", the Professor does not throw out Mojo Jojo in the film like the Professor said he did in "Mr. Mojo's Rising".
To say they didn't retcon these things is pretty much a lie, much like how history had been whitewashed, as in omitting all the atrocities that took place in the country.
Doug, your cat is adorable!

I agree that, as a product, it's pretty standard in most respects. However, I'd argue that it didn't need to be clever or have any twists as Doug suggested. In fact, that could've potentially worked against it.
One important thing to understand about these kinds of films is that, while they are made for general audiences first and fans second, they're still made for the fans. It's largely an extension of the series.
A fair amount of its plot is retelling/re-interpreting events we already knew (Ex- Mojo Jojo's origin). As a prequel, it's fundamentally limited to certain degrees in what it can & can't do within canon.
A majority of those familiar with *TPPG,* at least in my anecdotal experience, who saw this in theaters had a good idea of what they were going to get since its announcement, even before further trailers.
Its purpose wasn't to reinvent the franchise but use nostalgia for it to its advantage in marketing, to rekindle its value for a new generation of viewers in addition to accumulating support from older fans.
It was never setting out to provide some grand twist on the formula. Everything in it from driving (albeit, familiar and often predictable) story beats to small references throughout was done by design.
Had it strived to be as clever, epic, surprising, and crowd-pleasing as possible within conventions of its mythos, the spectacle of that could've easily distracted and detracted from its intended impact.
*It was structured as a love letter to the characters, not the next great animated blockbuster. And in that context, it fully accomplished its goal imo. I can appreciate its commitment to that direction.*
Well said!

Still doesn't make it a good movie. I remember watching this as a kid being, idk... Fine with it. I'm not gonna praise it nor gonna condemn it. It's fine for what it is and rewatching it today. I still felt the same emotion as I felt when I was 10. I will always remember this as a time waster. Hate me, idc
@@Dead8Head "Good" is subjective, and you're entitled to your preference. And no, I don't hate you. That would be childish, to hate someone over a difference of opinion on a movie.
@@Justmyhandle immature or mature. A life without hate is boring.
IT"S WEDNESDAY!!!!! BEST DAY OF THE WEEK!!!! NEW NOSTALGIA CRITIC!!!! :D
Stop lying Wednesday pales in comparison of Thursday
Y'know they premiere on Tuesday right? Been doing so for like 10 years? Or does it not count if it's not on CZcams?
New episodes actually come out on Tuesdays on the Channel Awesome website.
DJ Bauman Oh HELL YEAH💀
I mean, Utonium should really have explained to the teacher what he meant by special and told the girls not to abuse their powers frivolously.
please bring back The Top 11 Nostalgia Critic F Ups please
>how some fans reacted
You mean how we all reacted cause the reboot is a genuine pile of flaming garbage, it just looks worse, Craig McCracken didn't want it to happen but it did anyway, they got rid of Ms. Bellum and they made sure to get everyone from the original cast EXCEPT the voices of the girls?
I also that Craig McCracken absolutely hates the reboot, as well.
Hey, I think I found the reboot defender.
@@ElFreakinCid I don't recall I said anything about "defending" reboot. I just thought reboot series is SOOO bad, it WOULDN'T be normal if some of cartoon fans turns into angry apes. Don't you agree??
@@Eccegato Aside from people flipping out over the network getting rid of the original voice actors, no one really "raged" over it. Original fans just rolled their eyes and ignored the reboot for the most part, especially since people are used to CN's silly thinking that bringing back old shows and ruining what made them loved in the first place "for the new generation" is a good marketing strategy.
@@coolman5242 I remember quite a few people raging once they had the girls twerking, and the episode where one of the writers had a character that looked like himself with blossom having the hots for, jesus
Do the Spongebob SquarePants Movie.
Yes
Doug's reviewed good movies before. Remember his review of Hook?
As for me, I'd personally love to hear his thoughts on Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. I mean, he talked about an episode of the show in his Overlooked Christmas Specials video, so he must be a fan. I wonder how he feels about the movie.
On one hand, that could be a good review, but on the other hand, he could be as biased against Spongebob as he is biased against Pokemon, so I am basically on the fence as to whether or not I personally think that he should review it. Its sequel on the other hand...
I'M A GOOFY CRITIC ROCK!
Am I the only one who, as a kid, thought that the Professor looked a lot like Samurai Jack? I realized years later that the same person who made PPG also made Samurai Jack, but back then I didn't really know XD
Also OMG that cat is so cute!!! Look at that cute face!!!! 😻
You're not the only one, there's a literal theory the professor is jack
Actually, the creator of PPG is not the creator of Samurái Jack. But...the creator of Samurái Jack was the executive producer of PPG.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I grew up with the PPG and loved nearly every episode. (Though I will admit some of the episodes that focused on the gangrene gang gave me SUPER strange vibes). It was creative, fun, and had some great animation.
6:16 Wow, I didn't think it would take that long to make a Man of Steel reference. Edit: 7:19, Oh my God, did Man of Steel really get their dialogue from The Powerpuff Girls Movie?
If they did, they certainly didn't take the right lessons.
True story, there was a sequel planned that cross dexter’s laboratory with powerpuff girls called dexter v powerful puff girls:dawn puffyness, where dexter saw the girls as a threat,so he decided too put a stop to them, this eventually would become the CN cinematic universe.
well that the plot of a fan comic.
Bubba Monical Batman V Superman much?
I know,I just couldn’t resist.
They are saved because apparently Dexter's father is also named utonium
Bubba Monical that.... actually sounds like something I would want lol
5:38 Matrix Reloaded Tag! My favorite part!
Love this original series, love this movie. I love the film’s animation style.
I love Mojo Jojo. One of my favorite world leaders

@@annielogue_ This will always be funny. Not as funny as the thread between Jesus and Hilter I saw the other day but funny.
Ironically in the final episode, he ends up creating world peace so..... yay?

What's the percentage on "Holy shit was that a motherfucking Mojo Jojo reference"?
Great Dane IT’S OVER 9............ 90% of the comments most likely complaining critic didn’t do a reference
7:15- I had a feeling that a Frozen reference was coming up...
