New Tesla Model Y “JUNIPER” wish list after 4,500 miles with Model 3 “Highland”
Vložit
- čas přidán 4. 03. 2024
- I’ve now covered 4,500 miles in the new 2024 Model 3 Highland Long Range in just 1 month and it gives me a good flavour of what to expect with the forthcoming 2024, maybe 2025 Tesla Model Y - code named “Juniper” (not Jupiter!)
Here’s a list of things I’d love to see as Tesla finish development of this new car. Not that my opinion will count for much or translate into actual modifications or change of plan, but it’s what I think could perfect it. Can almost count as a “roast my ride” of the Highland really.
But take in context, the cars are great. Really, the best EVs out there in most contexts but still, 9.5 out of 10 means there’s a few little things that would be awesome to see in the New Model Y which would make it just about the perfect Electric family car.
Let me know what you’d love to see featured in the new Y in the comments below!
Thanks for watching.

That doll hand is cracking me up. 😂😂 so random
Got that from Mr Furze!
Wait, are you saying that wasn't his own hand ?!
Made me think of the doll in Beerfest 😂
thought it was his daughters then had to do a double take, chucky?
Agree with the rain sensor, it’s so frustrating
Elon hates sensors (because they cost money) so I wouldn't be surprised if rain sensors are gone completely in favor of cameras.
Making Gerry Anderson proud with that hand!
Tesla Model Y Juniper, nice to have,
1) adjustable air suspension as an option.
2) 4 wheel steering as an option. The turning radius of the Model Y is not great.
3) 400v/48v with ultrafast charging would be great.
4) A Heads Up Display would work wonders.
Richard, you as always, are on point!
Utter.y disagree with you about the MY Suspension Richard… I LOVE the stiff ride.
Illumination of door handles, bumper camera, all camera recording, Carplay.. V2G would be awesome
one of the first things i did with my MYLR is to buy a tray for the front centre console storage - has felt lining and a special sun glasses divider - also mean coins etc aren't rattling around in the large main compartment underneath....
How's the Tesla vision perform with salted roads, rain/dirt/snow? Living in Scotland my reversing camera is unusable after a 30 min drive in winter. Scared Tesla vision would be rendered useless on the back
360 camera, HUD, HD radar and keep the stalks
Don’t forget Apple CarPlay! 😁
@@just8bits29 LOL, that's never going to come to our cars as long as Elon stays CEO, I would like to though, together with Android Auto for our Android friends.
@@cristianionascuagreed, they’re never going to add CarPlay. If I recall they even removed the ability to use a wired connection to pass audio from the usb ports on the center console. I believe it is still possible through the glovebox usb connection intended for sentry mode.
No HUD
@@cristianionascuthere’s another CZcamsr who introduced an interesting perspective. It’s like Robert rosenfield or something-he mentioned that it seems possible because of their integration of Apple Podcasts and Apple Music. Now that Apple has discontinued their EV as a competitor, he claims that this may now make it more likely for Tesla to work on putting CarPlay on their cars.
What about a flux capacitor?
2028 Roadster V-TOL. Start saving.
I want MORE of everything for LESS money. I'm just a silly consumer. But in reality, I only want an LFP battery, V2H charging, a real surround view, and for god's sake Tesla MORE color options.
I’m pleased you mentioned a tiltable display; I removed mine from my Y a week prior to selling and it was a noticeable downgrade.
I’ve switched to an Enyaq until the Juniper comes out to minimise my losses when selling the Model Y. The Enyaq is my first car with a heads-up display and I’m finding it to be exceptionally useful, so much so I’ve started to look for after market HUDs to go in the Juniper when inevitably buy one!
If they keep the no stalk rule put the indicators buttons on both sides of the wheel (left turn on the left and right turn on the right)
that would require two hands, the worst thing about the highland design is the left/right indicators are above/below each other, so unintuitive
Make sure it has stalks for gods sake!
It was quite interesting to see you point out all the issues with the current models. Thank you for being honest about them.
or make it an option for extra money
Heads up, stalks and some quick access buttons, sorted, now that wasn’t hard was it???
I think to get 5 stars in 2026 they may have to bring back stalks and buttons for basic often used functions.
Stalks, bring back stalks or watch sales take a dip. I won't be buying a car without the stalks/better controls. Proper rain sensor - check. Parking sensors with 360 cameras - still needed. Fix phantom braking - Tesla is a tech company right? Only been years and they are still slamming on the brakes. Blind spot monitoring put that alert in the mirrors and make it very obvious. This LED they are using for blind spot monitoring sucks. Door handle light, how complicated is this? Remove the rear display on the base trim. It will just end up broke if you have small kids and pets. Trim levels would be fine so you can opt for stuff you want. Good points on the Y cargo cover.
Tesla is like the Ford with the Model T. You can get it in any color you want as long as it is black... Still think the older car front end looks better than the refresh. Rear end looks better on the refresh.
At this point in North America I think people are going to wait to see the NACS equipped cars/trucks and new models start to be announced. Unless you just have to have a car now the competition is getting better and they will still offer stalks and the tech that has been around for a decade or more in most cars. Just saw the Ioniq 5 2025 model leaks and it looks like it will be much improved. Just a glimpse of good things coming. Tesla chargers are finally opening up for other EV owners.
Steer by wire and 48 volt architecture please
And V2G
Agreed but keep stalks and rear wiper please. 🙏
V2G , wirelless traction battery charging, load cover like a Mazda CX5 and official extras ( HUD, tilt monitor support, customizable shortcut buttons , WAZE support)
Great vid, Richard.
Richie, this is a great review!!
Richard's Christmas wish list, haha
Heated/cooled cupholders, adjustable opaqueness to the pan roof
Heated Cupholders 😲
My Old Ford focus has an air conditioned glovebox , great for drinks .
Make a van version please Elon.
Love your videos Richard, found you from CarWow link and very glad I did. You make the best EV content out there!!
Needs another seal near the bottom of the door to keep out road dirt
Charge port light please
Gooday, Thank you, I like your comments and are enthusiastic for you to suggest the rear sub trunk(boot) be😊 shaped to enable it to accommodate a spare tyre like the Modern Spare
Brilliant feedback Richard.
I tried Y a week a ago (right side traffic) and I was amazed to notice that there is no way to stretch the left leg. There is no space between the break pedal and the wheel arch. I wonder why nobody mentions this ergonomics issue. Apart from that parking sensors are a must ( front camera will be constantly dirty), 360 vision, panoramic roof blinds, stalks are the minimum. HUD should be available as well, it’s kind of standard today, at least as an option.
Another great video Richard, thanks
All the suggestions are so well thought out. 👍
I’m happy with my Y as it is, even my auto wipers work.
Likewise.
Which day? 3rd Wednesday every October? ;)
The stalks being removed I feel is all part of the long term plan. Steer by wire will come to all cars and you won't have to turn the wheel so much so the button placement won't be an issue going around roundabouts.
Sorry but that makes no sense. Steer by wire isn’t here. Why implement something that may work when the thing that may make it work isn’t actually in place. Absolute stupidity.
@@Sam-tx1tn oh I'm not saying it's the right or correct thing to do. I just think they're making slow changes to work to big changes. They're Americans so roundabout difficulties aren't such an issue for them so this is a little step change.
Love the door handle illumination idea.
Must have a power frunk!
Is it worth having Waze support if it means losing the supercharger network integration? If you use a non-Tesla nav system how will it handle preconditioning etc. it is unlikely that the two can be easily integrated
You have done more miles in a month than I have in my Y in 1 year !
Make an estate version flat at the back like a Volvo so even more actual use able boot space, then could be used as a van.
Ditto. I have had 2003 and 2007 Nissan X-Trails, last of the practical and attractive boxy SUVs, Land Rover Discovery and new excellent KIA EV9 excepted. I have a Y and it is doing us fine for shopping, luggage and my RC plane hobby, but a square back means you can put, uhm, rectangular things in the back, such as furniture, white goods etc. But then not so good aerodynamics, so my guess is that to compliment Tesla's current line up, an Avant like stretched 3 or Y would make sense, as you say, like an older Volvo. When not used for transporting big things, it would have 3 rows of seats and space in the smaller back area for shopping, Labrador, luggage etc. A 3P Avant would give the Audio S8 Avant a run for it's money on the A27 or Autobahn if over there...
Or just an f'in hatchback
@@80y3r9 but the Y is hatch back in theory, I drive a volvo xc70 and as the back end is flat I have maximum usable boot, they all seem to build estates that are sweeping back like audi vw skoda that give good letterage but not sq volume.
@@GudieveNing The T31 X-trail is absolutely fantastic, why they ever got rid of the under boot drawers was beyond me. The only downside was the lack of room in the back seats, but the boot is massive!
Richard I agree with allot of them thing you said cheers guys
Lol @ the hand 😂
100% agreed with you Richard.
Excellent real world review.
You've got a lot of great ideas for improvement.
Tesla would be wise to listen to you.
Agree with all those points, I love our MY but my improvements would be:
1. WIPERS! never pressed that button so much ever in any other car.
2. Rear passengers complain about hard ride - we have massive pot holes (council do nothing - standard UK)
3. Front parking vision very very poor - need a repaint on our bumper thanks to a barrier in France
4. Boot needs cargo strap points - it’s so big the dog crate moves - had to secure it with Velcro
5. Charging flap needs to be available to open for longer after parking - after getting cable from frunk car locks and have to mess around in app or open a door to open flap whilst holding the cable (first world problem) - I’ll except David mode for this like Joe mode 😂
You know there's a button on your charging cable ??😅 push this the flap opens
Just press the flap
A rain sensor, rear door manual levers (passengers do not need to figure out how to disassemble door pocket to exit vehicle in a timely manner) 🔥
Voice control of all the vehicle functions that you might want/need to adjust while driving. Especially voice control of the headlights and fog lights. And an option to specify a range/battery percentage at the end of a journey to support driving to a desto without chargers.
I think the HUD, optional stalks and self presenting illuminated handles are needed...spot on! Lets HOPE they listen 😅
I really love to think Elon is actually watching this one :D And I have to say I agree with most of these points. However, I do not agree that there should be trim levels. I love the simplicity that Tesla represents, and when you buy a long-range car you know you get all the good stuff and there is nothing extra to add!
In reality (at least in the UK) base spec models are only there to have a low price point to advertise, sales volumes of base models tend to be small, especially if you take away the rental fleets
Love your reviews Richard. We too are holding back for the new versions with the improvements you mention. We are looking at the RWD version with hopefully improved range , better wipers, better looking wheel covers ,
Richard, This is all good recommendations. As a new Model 3 owner, I am awaiting to hear about Tesla addressing the blind spot in front of the front bumper. Reverse parking is no problem with high resolution rear view cameras. However, pulling into a parking bay, does not give a top view or a distance measure to an obstacle or a wall in front of the vehicle. This is guesswork at the moment, as the recent Hi Fidelity park Assist "STOP" indicates a distance too far ahead of the wall. Also at times, this reading is inconsistent. View in front of the front bumper would solve this issue. Hope this would be improved to a more reliable and to an acceptable level in a future software update. This would make front parking much easier and enhance overall user experience.
Rear parcel shelf should be a removeable spring-loaded roll-up type as others such as Volkswagen Golf etc have.
Lit door handles - light under the mirrors is aways good.
360 camera. Works a treat in the BYD Atto 3 and Seal.
HUD that can be turned off for those "minimalists" out there.
Variable regen braking using a slider control from no regen to one pedal mode.
Personally, I can live without Android auto as it tends to take over too much control and is hard to tame when you don't want to use it, other than messing in the phone settings to stop it auto loading.
Richard, have you gotten used to navigating in and out of roundabouts with the new indicator switches? I have test driven the Highland, and thought it was almost impossible to do. Have you gotten used to that or?
What Tesla model do you own?
@@_nosikeuzoma1456 None yet, but I really didn't like the indicator buttons on my test drive. Was just wondering if it was something, that was easily learned.
@@Gonza1000 yeah you can easily learn it
It’s not difficult to learn at all
How many have you test driven?
@@_nosikeuzoma1456 Only the Highland so far. Biggest issue was the small roundabouts.
12:40 There was a short-lived standard range with AWD, the 4860 Model Y out of Austin
11:43 while you’re in the boot… since the 7-seater option is not available out side the US, can you remove the padded ridge in the middle between the sub-boot and the space where the 2nd row would fit. This would allow a space saver to be laid flat without me having to do a hatchet job on the boot liner.
The new suspension on the MY23/24 is great. Coming from a new Land Rover with air suspension it’s very close to as good. Very pleased with it.
I'd suggest a light for the charge port so you can actually see the port when you're plugging in.
The flip out towbars you see on some cars are much better to use than the detachable ones. Alternatively have a detachable towbar rated so that you can just leave it in place.
Yep agree with both of those 👍
I leave my MY towbar in place …. I can’t see a problem with that . I actually think it Improves the look of the car ! 😂
@@maxflight777 from the Model 3 manual -
"When not in use, the hitch should be removed and stored in a dry location to prevent dust and corrosion. Keep the dust cover over the hitch housing to prevent dirt and debris from entering (see Disconnecting the Tow Hitch)."
The little hand 4:02 🤣
Geeat Video! Agree with all points (except don't need Carplay :) but for me most important would be air suspension (option at least), front camera and front and rear camera washers (here in Finland the rear camera of my Tesla is useless in winter).
So pretty much the MY needs to catch up with Merc/Beemers etc.
Our MY is OK - but falls well short of our EQC in terms of comfort, quietness, and physical controls.
The MY does win though, on space in the cabin and boot, range, and of course access to the supercharger network.
In every other way, with the Merc having 360 cameras, proper parking sensors (and will self park if you can be bothered - far quicker to do it yourself), working auto wipers, matrix headlights, Apple CarPlay, comfy seats, silent cabin, great ride comfort, HUD, and high quality materials - the Merc is always our wagon of choice - unless we need the supercharger network.
Had my Y 4 months. Wishlist. Agree on the cold knees, light up handles, better wipers, front parking camera, front seat base longer, adjustable headrest. That should do for me 👍
Just to add I think the parcel shelf in mine is different to the one in your white car as it has 3 fold points rather than 2. I leave the rear most section folded up permanently as it makes loading much easier
Cold knees??
I don’t know how they messed up the auto wipers so much. I had a golf 4 in 2004 that could literally read my mind, always got it right… come on Elon..
@@Joe-ud2hb As Richard said in the video, I'm 6 Ft tall, The lower part of my legs, knees down are always colder than the rest of me, makes a change from cold feet.
@@grantnyenes3742 TBH the auto wipers were shite in my Nissan Leaf, at least you have manual override on a Tesla.
10:55 rear window blinds would be awesome but problematic with frameless windows. You have nowhere to anchor them and if you do it to the main structure then you cannot have the door open to put them up
I would like to see a HUD, 360 view camera (including front bumper camera), and LCD rear view mirror.
I would love to see a the swivelling dashboard, and the handles aren’t they operated by a key fob or your smartphone, so it would be much easier to unlock?
Model Y should include it’s own WiFi connection so everyone in the car can be connected.
Good vid. Good list of improvements. Re-gen paddles behind the steering wheel is the one you missed. It will never happen as they are getting rid of all steering wheel addenda! Surprised the Highland Model 3 is now 1 pedal only with no choice of "creep" etc for reversing etc.
Ventilated seats, redesigned partial shelf and matrix lights.
Great Video :-)
Hmm I agree with what you say. I would not buy one of these until the fixes you advise are incorporated.
Great suggestions.
Well you go have some really suggestions, nice and indeed it just makes the even better. In countries with lots of roundabouts you definitely need stocks. All the best from the Netherlands
you can 3dprint a sunglass holder behind the screen
I heard a couple of years ago, maybe less, that Tesla was putting the mechanism for angling the main screen, but without the motors. Does anybody know if the new 2024 Model 3 has the motors? Maybe we'll get motorized screen angle as a software update before too long.
It’s a Model s/x only feature
The handles are great as is imo, my 2 and 3 year olds have had no issues using them (to my annoyance haha)
Stalkless seems a given, so how about reconfiguring the steering wheel controls so that the left indicator is on the left hand side of the wheel and the right indicator on the right. Makes more sense than having them set vertically.
It could be made to always stay on the left or right depending on the steering angle ,can't go wrong then👍
I have seen the silver colour on 3s and Ys. Looks good, please can we have it? Is it called Cyber Silver?
You asking for everything what Nio has but that is premium car
Omoda has disclosed pricing and specification for the Omoda 5 which makes its debut in the UK this year and goes on sale in March 2024. Omoda 5 pricing will start from £24,000 OTR for the Comfort variant, and £27,000 OTR for the Noble variant.
The E5 (EV) pricing is 30-40k I believe. 25k is ice varient.
Suspension re-tuning likely adds no cost- done! Scrap the rear LCD and use the cost savings to:
1) return the steering wheel stalks; and
2) add front camera for ultimate precision in Parking Assist, and perhaps the elusive “birds-eye view” that has come to be a fundamental expectation in a new tech automobile.
The seats ! they need to be a smidge bigger !
where does it end?
Quicksilver colour for European market
Quicksilver (and Midnight Cherry Red) are European only as they come from Berlin. I saw quite a few Quicksilver Model Y on a trip to Iceland recently and it would definitely be the colour I would pick if it was available in UK.
Kerb resistant alloys, chip resistant paint, HUD, more buttons, decent lumbar support (I've moved away from Tesla to a Genesis)
Looking forward to new y improvements.
06:50 front bumper cam is coming to the m3 and juniper afterwards
The general build quality around the hatch needs improvement - I’ve never known a boot lid to creak so much
Thanks Richard. Reduce turning circle to less than 11.5m. Reduce the width of Y to same as Model 3, so its easier to go through 6 foot 6 inch and 7 foot width restrictions, as well as park.
Did the MY23 Y come with the so-called comfort suspension?
No
They say the newer Ys from Germany 🇩🇪 are better tuned, a bit more comfortable. I haven't had a direct comparison yet.
Any suggestion that increases a) production cost or b) production man hours is immediately binned.
40k miles in 15 months in my MY- overall I am very happy but I really want a heads up display. It’s not an issue for many people but when you’re tired, it’s dark and it’s raining it’s really difficult to keep an eye on the speedo.
They must fix Tesla vision. That's the number one gripe I have with my model Y. Either front facing cameras x3 (2xside facing fronts and one front bumper). Do a top down 360 view like other car brands or even better bring back the ultra sonic sensors. Removing them was a huge error. Then yes to all your other points.
It works well - better than USS.
Tesla has Stealth Grey as a standard colour for the Model 3 in the US. I wonder if that will be offered in the UK.
I think we will see the Juniper differ some from the Highland. Maybe the 3&Y will be the different "trim levels" in the future
Screens on the headrest for a 40k car? Dream about it 😀
Ability to indicate left/right using voice commands
They will need to keep the stalks to get a 5 star rating from 2026!
I really hope they keep the stalks!
If i order model Y now would i get the new updated model Y?
No, it’s not been announced and they may be adding updates to the existing model in stages so as not to suffer the Osborne Effect en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_effect?wprov=sfti1
Black headliner please 🙏
Test drove the 3 last week - no stalks: no problem! Really easy to adjust to the new controls.
Edward.. exactly ✅
Spigen treys are great for organising
My wipers always react to low sunlight flickering through tree branches. Never fails to surprise me.
1. A working rain sensor, 100%. I had a 2003 BMW with a rain sensor that actually worked! How can we trust Tesla will make a car that can self drive when you can't even get a rain sensor to work!
I'm looking to make my first Tesla purchase, but am not in immediate need of a new car and have narrowed my choice down to the Model Y. Would you wait for Model Y Juniper, or take advantage of good deals on existing Model Y?
The road noise is still terrible in the new model 3 highland. They need to improve it to the point that rear seat passengers can hear what front seat people say in a normal voice level. On a highway.
Customers be like:
We need more 1) air suspension
2) faster reacting headlights (they’re dangerously slow when switching from dipped to high beam)
3) better seats needed similar to m sport seats bmw offers with better body support
4) better cabin noise isolation
5) speedometer dash (or at least a heads up display!!!) , are you kidding me???!!!. Constantly looking side-ways for the speed in a country like UK with 69 different speed limits on any given strip of road is just an atrocious experience
6) panoramic roof that can at least partially open? Too much to ask?
7) rain sensor
8) tilting main touch screen towards the driver for obvious reasons
9) basically overall the possibility to add more options on the vehicle
Tesla’s response be like:
Here ya go faster acceleration by 0.9s via paid software update mate. Speed is everything friends!
