Lajos Détári vs. England - 1988 International Friendly

- Almost eighty years on since their first football meeting, the kinship between the two nations has produced some classical encounters, including the so called 'Match of the Century', in which the 'Mighty Magyars' of the '50s resoundingly outplayed England at Wembley with approximately 105 000 in attendance. Fast forward a few decades and a player of comparable talent had blossomed for Hungary and was expected to lead a limited generation. On this bright Budapest afternoon the blonde number ten put in a display worthy of only a fraction of his extreme abilities. He dictated the tempo of the match with his timed accelerations that left him multiple steps ahead of the opposition in the subliminal zones behind their midfield captained by Bryan Robson and with time to exploit a technical ambidexterity out of the ordinary, for as Lajos himself rather hubristically stated, "... when I touch ball, music you've never heard plays, for in my feet little birds sing”.
Although on a personal level Détári's career was taking an alternate trajectory, within the space of the subsequent months, his trademark freekick would earn Eintracht Frankfurt the German Pokal, and soon after he was convinced by the ambitious Olympiacos president to rescue the Greek club from mid-table mediocrity, willing to outbid other European giants for his signature with a troublesome £6m outlay, the world record transfer fee at the time.

Détári was a world class football player in that time, but he had a very unlucky career.
The hungarian team was mysterious unsuccessful in the World Cup 1986 and after this tournament they couldn't step up again.
Détári's club carrer was in trouble more times with unlucky transfers too though he could play in the best clubs in the late 80's.

I discover him during a friendly match in Civitavecchia for World Cup '90. Hungary didn't go to World Cup but was a strong sparring partner for Brazil and Argentina.
Love hearing that memory of yours, although he wasn't an unknown quantity, it would have been rightful for him to showcase his talent at the peak of his powers four years after the disappointment in Mexico. Nevertheless he remains in my eyes among the exclusive pantheon of footballing greats, a rare player who possessed, to use a Basketball term 'Triple Threat', the ability to pass, dribbling and shoot in equal measure, qualities inherent in only a handful in history.
One of the best of his generation! A pure genius! In my opinion the most underrated Hungarian player ever!

Thank you, I appreciate the comparison, although I believe Lajos was the slightly better player despite having less of a reputation. Hopefully I can pay homage to his talents further in the near future
The last world class Hungarian player who should have been signed by a top team in the late 80s, early 90s. A true midfield general with vision and pace who had a deadly shot with both feet and scored many goals. The greed of the Hungarian Football Association and Honved ruined his international club career. All they cared for was the transfer fee, not Detari's future. First they sold him to Germany, then to Greece. He won the domestic cups and scored goals in the finals, but the great chance never came. He was exploited and wasn't allowed to make his own decisions. A wasted talent. The world could never see what he would've accomplished in a star club. A sad story. He's still a bitter man.
