Hey guys, I made this video to explain to parents (and grad students or clinicians) how I typically treat pediatric clients presenting with characteristics of Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

Usually I follow this exact protocol - sometimes I have also had success using the Kaufman Apraxia of Speech Cards (very pricey) - and they also use a very similar progression - www.northernspeech.com/langua...
The main thing is focusing on the VOWELS and then adding on to them once your child is successful with those! Don't rush and don't give up! It might take a week or two to see any progress, but don't give up! You can do it! :) Also- remember to incorporate fun games and special treats for working with your little ones!

Our son, Benjamin, is 4 1/2 years old. He has Apraxia. He has recently become very frustrated and short tempered due to not being understood. Our little guy who is normally easy going and happy has frequent meltdowns and it is clear he feels very frustrated. We are working so hard on how to help him here at home and also using a speech therapist over Zoom. I am so thankful for your helpful channel! Thank you for your kindness and selflessness in helping these precious children and their caregivers!

These videos are great. Just found them. My 4yo daughter has apraxia and sees an SLP once a week (insurance does not cover speech for apraxia). She is struggling so hard with hard c sounds (just recently got cookie), ch, sh, and final consonant (like puT, cuP, doG... though we have maP, taP etc)... definitely going to be watching through ALL of your videos!

Even like a lesson plan for each sound and then cv, vc and so on would be so helpful. I’m trying to build my own but its so hard cause I’m a respiratory therapist not a speech therapist. ;) Thanks!
I just discovered your channel....what an awesome resource! Thank for this! My girl just turned four and diagnosed with asd ll...she’s been in ABA for 2.5 years now and we still have yet to hear any full word or even “mommy” or “daddy” from her. :( so frustrating. We got her doing all of the vowels, consonants aren’t going so well. lol decided I better add more to our at-home effforts! I will try your ideas!
Hang in there! She can do it!! :) ABA is fantastic! I worked in an ABA clinic with RBTs, BCBAs & other ABA therapists for years, I love all the skills they teach & the principles used but it’s not always “language” heavy so I love that you’re incorporating some speech therapy at home as well! Any chance you could do a video on how to help with the blending on sounds for apraxia? My son still has breaks between sounds, I try and elongate words and slow them down this is successful at times but just wanted to see if you have any other tips?

Yes definitely I have a video out on “final consonant deletion” that shows a visual strategy!!! Basically you write the sounds on post it notes and then put them on a Ziploc bag and move the zipper all the way through the end running the sounds together as a visual reference
Hi. Thank you for your videos. They are helpful. Can you touch on AAC and it’s use to help support kids who are not able to use verbal language effectively or are working toward using speech, but are still limited?
Hey Darlene! What type of AAC device do they have? Honestly I don’t have a lot of experience with clients with AAC, mostly just PECS. I would suggest using functional & core vocabulary words (nouns that they love & verbs that are important) for example if they love crackers, I would use “eat” and “crackers”

Is the word “more” appropriate for a child with apraxia as a beginner? If they can’t say more when they want more but can make the “mmm” sound and bring their lips together do you recommend working on it and shaping it? What are the cvs of it? How would you shape that word? Would love to see a video specifically covering Manding/requesting!!!!! Didn’t see that topic come up!
Thanks very much for your video. My 4 year old son can speak all sounds but some sounds not clear or correct, e.g S, L, F, Th. But the main issue is sentence. It seems he struggles a lot putting all sound together to make a smooth sentence.. it seems every sound is an effort. Particularly the when he starts a sentence.. is it apraxia? Thanks a lot
Thanks for your sharing. I have been beneficial from these video. I have one question here, how if a child with apraxia, kept needing hand cue to pronounce the sound? I got child, been 1 month we work on "oo" sound, and she needing hand cue in order to protrude her lips.
hey there, so you are saying you're trying to remove the visual hand cue now? I might check out Borjem speech cards for this specifically! because its visual but not tactile and it sounds like this little one still needs cues, just not as aggressive of cueing as tactile hand cues. Let me know!

What sounds does she have? /k,g,s/ for example? Make a list of the consonants & vowels she has & then create words with those!
I just newly subscribed and I love your videos.
I have a son who was diagnosed with autism and global developmental delays. (non verbal) he’s made big strides in everything but speech. He just started being able to say “mama” and “ up” I can see when I work with him that he’s struggles to figure out how to form the sounds. I THINK he has apraxia. I’m going to take him to get re-evaluated for speech to see if I can get him more sessions. in the mean time what would you recommend for starting with a child who is non verbal?
Those are fantastic words to have! Great job! I would recommend onomatopoeias to start with! I have a video on those - “the best way to get a child to talk!” (Picture of me with a banana on my head) lmk if you can’t find it!

Can you explain expressive language disorder please? ANY help would be great. Thank you for the videos. We appreciate them
Expressive language disorders are where the child’s vocabulary is high & they UNDERSTAND all of the words & know a lot of words, and can follow directions & understand questions that are being asked, but are unable to VERBALLY express their understanding. (Here’s an example: I might lay out 12 pictures of objects & say “show me the ball” & the child will point to the ball. But when asked, “what is this?” When pointing to the ball, the child is unable to say “ball” because of an expressive language delay - all the words that they know have not yet caught up with their mouth essentially.) I hope this helped, if not, let me know!
Thanks for the videos! Very helpful. Clarifying question on your explanation of expressive language disorder-is it when their receptive vocab is high or their expressive vocab is high? My daughter is currently receiving early intervention services, and the therapist said it might be apraxia. Just trying to wrap my head around everything. Anyway, thanks for your videos. @@stephanierott8045 oh wonderful! I’m so happy that you’ve got everyone on the same page!- that’s a huge missing piece that goes unnoticed a lot & delays progress so I love how proactive you are!! If everyone is using the same cues your little one will definitely pick up on them more quickly! have you seen my Apraxia videos yet?
In regards to your question, Expressive language delay or disorder is when the child has a large extensive vocabulary that they can point to objects or their body parts and follow directions but if you ask them what is this while pointing at your nose they would have a hard time expressing the word even though they know what it is and can point it out. So it means that cognitively they have a lot of information but struggle to express the information that they already know - I hope this helps!
@@TheSpeechScoop Hey Very insightful videos thanks a ton, just have a followup question, My sons has very high vocabulary , follows commands My developmental Ped said he has expressive language delay. and asked to see SLP, so My Son is going through speech therapy , after 2 months of speech therapy he says few words "Anna",Amma, Atta, Nanna, Mama,Baba and trying to imitate new sounds now. My SLP told today that there might be apraxia component and he is having hard time producing `e`, `kh` `l` and she would be working on it. How Expressive language delay is different than groping or apraxia
My child can sound all the vowels and consonants on it’s own.but he can’t combine them to form words. What do I do?

My son had a tracheostomy from brith to age 5. He just turned 7 but he still struggles with speech, I have noticed that he doesnt have stregnth in his cheeks or lips. For example he cant move his lips from side to side, do you have any tips on how to stregthen his muscles? All the speech therapist in my city for some reason dont do the work that I see in your videos, its more of play time than anything it is so frustrating. Hope you can help, thanks!

My son is 3 years 4 months and recently diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech. also he has some behavioural issues, very stubborn. sometimes we don’t understand what he wanted to tell us and I get really frustrated. 😞 is there any success case of CAS??? and What exactly the cause of childhood apraxia??? is it getting hurt on the head or its present by birth?
Try saying “show me” & letting them show you what they want via pictures or pointing, or a communication board!
Yes, lots of success stories w apraxia, just need a specific type of therapy & a lot of it!
Apraxia is neurological & there is no known cause. It’s the synapses of the brain that tell oral motor mechanism how to move to say a word that are impaired & cannot

I love the Kaufman cards! They are very expensive but I used to use them a lot in the clinic I worked in!

What is apraxia?
I have two with apraxia. One is 3 and only talks with her mouth closed unless her 7 year old sister tells her to say words. My 8 year old talked with his mouth closed until he was around 4 years old. His speech is not clear. I homeschool my children and can’t drive. 3 have autism. My youngest doesn’t though. I need to do this myself especially for my 8 year old since we didn’t know that was the issue. He needs daily practice. My 3 year old won’t participate in the therapy sessions. We tried. Help please.
Hang in there mama! Sounds like you have a lot going on but I know you can do it! Use those exaggerated vowels & speech sound hand cues!
My 8 year old with apraxia and developmental delays has no more than 5-7 intelligible words. How do I know if she’s saying the right words? For all I know she’s pronouncing things wrong and I have no idea. When we’re trying to sound out words I struggle with this too because I can’t understand her. Do you have any advice? I feel overwhelmed and under supported 😞
Yes - try sequencing sounds & using carrier phrases. Kids with apraxia have trouble with individual sounds and can better sequence sounds together, try melodic phrases (I like _, I want _, I eat _) meaning saying them with a rythym

does he attend to your face/mouth when speaking or not yet? (if not uet) I would recommend targeting the attention span/eye contact first, then pointing and then using the vowel cues to promote sounds.

Every time I try my 3 year old is just shaking his head. I am at my wit ends :( it’s so hard for him and he refuses. I ve seen him opening his mouth but no sound coming from it. It makes cry every time
Another Bulgarian Apraxia mum here. Please, find the Cherab Apraxia foundation on Facebook or the webpage and start him on Nordic Naturals ProEpa and ProEfa or if you cannot source these find Nordic Naturals Ultimate omega or any strong fish oil. If it doesn’t help it won’t hurt. I’ve only discovered this channel recently and this video gives me a starting point.. start with vowels. Songs for littles here on CZcams has also been helpful for us. Успех!
