Hammond losing his mind on the mountain switching his voice between Clarkson and May was possibly one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen on the show.
They are, like most lifetime friends, they annoy each other, they take the piss out of each other… but when shit gets real, like an injury, they do care… and when Jeremy was sacked from the BBC, they all walked, because they’re loyal to each other and they love working together. They’re all capable of successful solo careers, and they do have them… but even then, they make comical references to each other… you can bet that if you met one of them in person and decided to bad mouth one of the others, they’d tell you to do one.
The sleeping bag clip at the end: if you watch the first series, you can see the delight of anticipation in Jeremy's face whenever James was about to make a sharp, witty comment. Jeremy wanted James as a co-presenter; it was at his behest, and he had to wait a series to get him. They might pretend to dislike each other for comedic purposes, but Jeremy has a kinship with and an affinity for James.
And that's also why James (and Richard) left when Jeremy was sacked. I'm not saying he shouldn't be, I'm just saying that they knew that Top Gear is just three middle-age guys who have an affinity towards cars. They knew that without Jeremy it wouldn't work, so they left. I'm pretty sure that had the situation been reversed (i.e. either James or Richard got the sack instead of him) Jezza would've left too.

The thing studios don’t understand is it’s not as simple as just getting the blokes to spend more time together, with it eventually happening. Jeremy wanted James for series 1, and fought with execs to keep Hammond on for series 2, in addition to finally bringing on May. There was genuine respect between them even before they grew really close.
Yes this video, especially after 6:12. This is why we love the Top Gear that these blokes were on, and didn't want to watch the second version without them.
I swear to God, May's impression of Jeremy in a sleeping bag makes me crack up. In another video he describes Jeremy as a "blasphemous maggot" once he lays down in his sleeping bag.

Best part @3:09 when Richard, stranded on top on a Canadian mountain, makes effigies of Jezza and May out of tree branches and then verbally mocks them. Yes it was another incredibly scripted episode/moment, but still funny as hell.
