I need to argue the point that the ambiguity is removed by the last scene, the ambiguity is what makes this one of the most brilliant films I've ever seen and throughout the film, I think the double entendre of insanity vs religion can be looked at both ways throughout. Making that very last split second of the film one of the most haunting shots ever because if you think about it if something greater and more powerful could actually talk to her but it is evidently not god. I'm very happy to view this from both perspectives.
If she is insane: She subconsciously thinks that she has lived a meaningless life and her delusion has lead her to hallucinate up until the point where her pain becomes unbearable to the point she can't see anything but reality and pure suffering up until the point of death.
If "god" is speaking to her: Satan has preyed on the vulnerable, speaking to her and convincing her to do his will up until the last second where he unveils himself and she gets dragged to hell!
Rose Glass used this ambiguity masterfully and I'm pretty sure she's a genius.

100% spot on... The ending split second is literally her realization that she just burned herself to death, thus learning everything she has lived for recently is a lie... learning it in the most tragic and honestly ominous of ways I've ever seen a film depict anything.
There is a slight chance that the "guilt" you are referring to speaking to her was actually Satan preying on a weak soul. They made it a point to make said guilt sound an awfully lot like you'd depict Satan pretending to be God. Her burning in the end could have been damnation....
I tend to believe the former tho. She is a young woman who showed extreme signs of classic Borderline Personality Disorder and budding schizophrenia... It's not a religious movie at all, but just a sad tale of a murderous, delusional, lonely young woman..

Could it be argued that the entire religion thing was fake as well ? No satan. But her internal conscious walking her down that path ? Her mental so far gone at this point that she realistically clinged onto anything that could help her in this time in her life.

The last second with her burning kinda look like her burning in hell - especially in contrast with her angelic version a second ago. Also, suddenly the ocean is gone and daylight is gone - so I am sure that's intentional. Also, her narration and attitude and the things she does make her come across like anything but a saint. So I am beginning to think that all of this is intentional and that the title of the movie is meant to be seen entirely ironic.

Interesting observation. I’ll have to watch it again sometime in the future.

i was scared at the ending when she burned herself i literally said "as if it was like her expectations and the reality"

I know the music here is an odd choice but it was hard to find a religious score that wasn’t sweeping or organs blaring.

I love this movie and relate to Maud probably as much as any character I've ever seen portrayed on film even though on the surface I might appear opposite from her and am not religious. Sounds weird but I've had similar experiences but luckily had enough support and normalcy in my life to not be completely torn apart by my struggle with faith in finding a purpose or wanting to be good.

is the last second of the film a real view of how others and the viewer see maud or was it a realization that maud had of the reality

It’s reality snapping Maude out of her delusions

    • @TheoryofElysium
      @TheoryofElysium Před 2 lety +1

It's either Maud realising that it's all in her head in her last second where she's metaphorically burning in hell.
Or it's Satan unveiling his plan to feast on her vulnerable soul and she's literally burning in hell.
Either way, the only thing that's clear is she is definitely burning in hell.
      Schrodingers Saint.

Fractured consciousness is more dangerous then any virus. Amazingly summed all in the last few secs. I mean we see so many individuals both loners or with family dealing.with PTSD alone. People totally dismiss PTSD when it can generate even after missing a train.

Speaking of Debbie Downer, could you please tackle Brazil by Terry Gilliam?

I’ll add it to the list. It’ll be ages though as for some reason Gilliam films tend to be claimed by film rights owner more than any other director for some reason (even Spielberg).
