  • Built in 1949 for Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, 1309 was last locomotive to leave the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The locomotive ran til the end of the Steam Era on the C&O. Skipping to 2014, The Locomotive was acquired by Western Maryland Scenic Railroad for Operation. During the restoration made downfalls of funding & almost ending the whole project. But in the end of 2020, the locomotive made its first move under steam and a new era has begun. We now are at February 2022 for the First 1309 Charter hosted by Trains Magazine. Our adventure begins with a test run with 1309, then the evening dinner train & 2 days of photo freight action to Frostburg. The Locomotive made quite a show and the Railroad & Trains Magazine did an amazing job making this event possible. Listen now as the new thunder makes it up to Frostburg. Enjoy!

    I'm currently having an "Inception" moment. I am watching this video while in my back yard planting flowers. I look up and the actual 1309 is going forward and backward on the tracks less then 50 ft from me. The railyard is literally in my backyard. I see 1309 almost every day.

    I could write a million things. But a Hooter whistle on an articulated locomotive! I'm floored. Thank you to everyone involved. it's beyond unbelievable. Closest I'll ever get to seeing and hearing the 1218 in my lifetime. can't wait to see and experience it in person.

    I run the fantastic lokomotive as a H0 1:87 model made by Bachmann in the finest Spectrum series. Its a wonderful feeling, when the mallet driver rods are working together. The slower the better. Best regards from Gmy!

      If you have a model of an Allegheny, place them together and see how tiny this locomotive looks in comparison. It seems like 98,000 lbs tractive effort is a large amount. Amazing; those little drivers must have really pulled. In one of my books it shows a photo of one puling 176 empties! Wow!

    This is Amazing to me! When I was little kid, My Grandmother gave me a big picture book she had had from the 20's or 30's of The Mighty Western Maryland .
    It was full page bla k & White photos of all the Crack Steam trains in the Allegheny Mountains.I poured over that book forever. She knew I loved steam, and her brother was a conductor for W M.
    He was killed when he got in a fight w a hobo and lost his footing at speed. This engine is something he would have worked on.
    Thank God they restored it! 🙏What a treat. Thank you for video.

    My son loves trains 🚆🛤🚂🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋 especially steam locomotives 🚂 like that one and he is glad that the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad acquired and restored 1309 to operation. He also hopes that someday soon the other track beside the one they currently use and the rest of the line from switch #9 to Connellsville will be rebuilt and used again for both freight and passenger trains. But he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality! He says it makes know sense that the Western Maryland line to Connellsville PA was abandoned in favor of the parallel Baltimore and Ohio line because the Western Maryland line had an easier climb over Sand Patch with a gradient of just 1% and had very scenic views of the rolling Appalachian mountains. He really believes that if the Western Maryland line to Connellsville PA was rebuilt they would really increase business.

    This is the closest thing we'll ever get to having a WM M Class Challenger running over these rails again.
    *Of course, unless we build a new one.*

      @@CaptainCrutch If the N&W is truly gone, then none of the steam locomotives will ever exist into the modern world. we won't be able to see 611, 1218, 2956 or any of the steam locomotives made by the N&W to be saved and preserved for many generations to come. But they are still here to this day, so the N&W is never truly gone. As cargo moving people always say "There's no stopping us!".

    I also especially Love those Western Maryland coaches, are they original or have did they belong to another railroad and were re named for this Western Maryland excursion line with the speed lettering, they are Classics, is the second one a dining car. Thanks for your response.

    • @CaptainCrutch
      @CaptainCrutch Před 2 lety +1

      None of the coaches are original WM, the WM only had one coach of this style. If you’re referring to the second coach that’s green, it is just a standard coach… however the silver cars with red stripes in this consist are all dining cars, with one being a dedicated kitchen car.
