    Naomi looks fit and her first serve is close to her 2018 percentage. She is hitting with much more shape and pinning people to the angles and waiting for a winner rather than the sometimes lower percentage winner shots of the past. The fact that she is setting up for volleys and rushing net is an outstanding new nuance to her game.

    I don’t recall seeing anyone hit such good cross court shots as well as Naomi does lately. She is able to control the points effectively, and her opponents are forced to only push the ball back in the court, expecting either a winner or an unforced error from Naomi. Since most of the time her shots come out as winners, I guess we can use the term “too good” :D

    I found Petkovic comments on the WTA website comparing facing the power of Serena and Naomi. She said Serena was just good at constructing points and would ever so slowly wear you down versus Naomi who is just physically stronger and superior than most players she plays.

    • @utetennisfan5458
      @utetennisfan5458 Před 2 lety +2

      @monty niranjan You're missing the context (it wasn't included in the OP). Petkovic was asked for her take on Naomi's and Serena's games (because they are compared quite often). Petkovic responded that people think Serena only plays power tennis, but that actually when Serena is playing her best, she is not playing that power tennis. Instead she's building a point well, playing well in every part of the game, and basically better in all departments. She was paying Serena a compliment. With Naomi, she described her as too physically strong, too powerful. She didn't actually make a direct comparison between the two, saying which hit harder, etc.

      Strangely, unlike in other matches, Naomi actually hit 15 backhand winners in this match and only 13 forehand winners. On the other hand, she also hit more unforced errors on her backhand than on her forehand. Anyway it is true that her forehand is really huge and is her dominant shot that forced her opponent to scramble

      @@thomasmn9965 interesting numbers but i believe its not only about winners. Her forehand wasnt missing and it looked like every time she hit one she instantly was gaining control of the point. She can surely hit winners with her backhand but at times it just seems fragile, unlike her forehand that is very consistent

    Osaka is the next Serena. The media knows this and that is why they try hard to damage her psychology. That is one the Williams' strongest points, mental strength. Osaka needs to work more on it and go for the big wins.
