    Here’s a few things you left out:
    1. If there’s literally 0 blowby, always check under the truck to see if the CCV has been rerouted, easy way to trick people into thinking there’s good compression.
    2. Crank the truck and listen to it. Does it sound even? Are some cylinders louder than others? If so, could be a compression issue in one or more cylinders.
    3. CHECK THE RADIATOR FLUID. Often overlooked, but very important. Does it smell like diesel? Then the injector O-rings are probably leaking and it’s been overheated. Do you see any bubbles randomly appearing when the truck is running? Probably a blown head gasket.
    4. Check the exhaust. Is there haze? What color? White: could be worn injectors, test the IBRs. Blue: could be worn rings. Does it smell sweet? Probably blown head gasket.
    Lastly, know the common problems with the truck you’re looking at. LLY: known headgasket problems. LB7: known injector problems. 6.0: a LOT, take a diesel tech. 5.9: depends on who owned it, you can blow one up in >100k if you don’t take care of it. Etc.

      Agreed. This isn't excessive blowby. The correct test is to loosen the oil cap and see if there is excessive pressure. Either the cap with jitter around... that's excessive. Or it will blow completely off... which is catastrophic.

    The late 2nd gen Rams aren't prone to frame cracks behind the boxed section because they are normally reinforced. The cracks happened a lot on the 12 valve second gens without the reinforced frame, which is why they made the subtle change in the late 2nd gens.

    Also if you are looking to buy a 12v Dodge Cummins pick up is to see if it still has the fusable links or if it was converted over to fuse box and relays or circuit breakers. Dodge was notorious for using a fusable link which could catch fire. I have a 89 D350 and just converted mine to the fuse box and circuit breakers. Also if you're getting up to a 02 24v see if your fuel pumps are still mounted to the block or if one was converted into the fuel tank.

    Also if buying a 24v Cummins it's good to check fuel pressure! Low fuel pressure destroys the injection pump (vp44). Its a costly fix. Most of the time the stock in tank lift pump is not enough to supply the injection pump. I figured this out on my 01 when I bought it.

    I went and looked at a lifted 7.3 an hour and a half away last year, even asked him about blow by, the guy tried making it sound like a good deal and it’s a solid truck but I had to drive to him lol. Anyway when I asked him to crank it up I climbed up top and took the oil cap off and it looked like a fog machine out the oil neck it was so bad, he almost tripped running to shut it down. I guess embarrassed at that point.

    In the first gen I wouldn't be worried about that that's not much blowby. When the oil cap blows out of your hand be worried. But that ain't bad. My 7.3 is about 3 times that bad and used 1 gallon of oil every 500 miles. But still has power and runs good once It warms up.

    I bought a 2000 with 24 valve, it had a newer vp44 on it, I drove it 4000 miles & the vp44 malfunctioned. I looked at the lift pump and it was rusted,(old). I discovered that the lift pump was the cause for the vp44 injector pump failure most of the time due to insufficient fuel pressure. So if your looking at or have a 24 valve , you need to get an aftermarket lift pump and install it as close to fuel tank as possible ( pumps pump very well, but don’t suck very well) an original equipment lift pump is $100. And is garbage. An aftermarket lift pump is $300. And well worth it because it will save the $1500. Plus labor to replace the vp44 injector pump, thanks. Doug E

    Blow by and leaking a little oil. How many more miles will that run without doing anything? So how many quarts of oil versus cost to repair? As a retired locomotive engineer comparing leaky engines that’s nothing. I bought a first generation 1990 d350 and owned it 26 years. The only thing major I had to do was rebuild the fuel pump.
    Ps new the truck cost was $17,500. I wish I still had it.

    I'm looking at a 97 12v with 220k and 30k on tran 2 owner basic no rust whatsoever. Asking 15k it's my first diesel and most expensive purchase. Is 15k fair? Brakes are the only thing I know needs work. No blowback.

      @@StarfighterTV those are both 2 different engines. The 12 valve is a louder "clackier" motor. And the 24v is more quiet. all.in the shot of the injector. Kinda like the old 90s 7.3 is alot clackier then the 99-03 7.3. Like I said they sound like they have a little faint knock. I've noticed for a long time in videos. Just look up some videos of 12 valves and 24 valve and just listen to the motor. My 95 12 valve is loud a clacks alot loader then my dads 98 12 valve

    I have a 01 dodge ram 3500 5.9 high out put. It has rite at 400, 000 miles no tunes all original. I bought brand new in 01. Change oil every 3000 miles fuel filter every other oil change. Mine runs like the day I bought it new. But does leak oil. But it goes and goes. Original fuel pump but have changed primary lift pump three times now. The engine just keeps running. People laugh cause I change oil every three thousand miles. The oil looks like break in oil still to this day. It stays clean untill I get to that next oil change. Lol. Between oil changes I'll have to add about half a quart of oil. Good ole girl I got. Yep.

    Hate to tell you this but the first gen doesn’t have that bad off blow by. The kettle test is the best way to do this on Cummins. When it blows the cap off when taking it off and the engine is running that’s bad. I had one that had more vapor indicators than that and put 600k miles on it.

  • @allenanderson7769
    @allenanderson7769 Před 5 lety

    White haze is not an indicator of blow-by. Blow-by is pressure escaping the combustion chamber via the piston rings. All engines have a degree of it as piston rings do not form a perfect seal against the cylinder wall. A proper measurement of blow-by for a cummins is outlined in a factory service manual in which they give a 'normal' range an engine should be in, along with a value that indicates a rebuild may be needed. For us looking at these engines used, we use the oil cap method. If it doesn't blow the oil cap off at idle (blowing the dip stick out after a hard run is another indication) usually means the rings are in good shape. The white haze you're seeing is oil mist and water vapor escaping. That is perfectly normal. The leaks occuring on the 12v are likely due to poor CCV on these engines. It becomes very evident when you start 'turning them up' on a high milage engine. Look into a better CCV system, such as a dual valve cover breather, and I bet you'll see far less oil leaking out of it.

    • @allenanderson7769
      @allenanderson7769 Před 5 lety

      A vacuum pump going bad (or a vaccum leak) can also make it appear as if the engine has a ton of blow-by. The vaccum pump vents into the crank case. If its bad, or has a vaccum leak, it will pressurize the crank case and oil will have no choice but to vent out the front/rear main seals, CCV tube, or any other place it can escape.

    A cummins is a 6 cylinder so most of there blow by is out the bottom of the engine where as the duramax or powerstroke is a v8 so there’s is out the top just thought I would reach you something

  • @DG-ss1gc
    @DG-ss1gc Před 3 lety

    I doubt Cummins are that different, on 7.3 you can’t get operating temp in 5 min. My truck had issues that wouldn’t come till true op temp. That’s 20 min of driving or 10/15 min on the freeway.
    Not until I got an oil temp gauge did I find this out. My rough idle didn’t happen until I hit 190degrees which is where it also stops increasing . These trucks can’t even hit operating temp running around the block they must be put under load.
