  • @WhiteJarrah
    @WhiteJarrah Před 2 lety +17

I'm surprised you've not really touched on this, but _007 In New York_ was semi adapted as the ending of _Quantum of Solace._ It's a mixed bag, but the basic premise of the short story is that Bond is on a mission to warn a fellow agent that her boyfriend is working for the Russians as a honeypot. A spy who poses as a love interest for an enemy spy who then gets secrets out of them during pillow talk. That basic premise was repurposed in the film, albeit changing Russia to Quantum and ironically enough swapping New York for Russia.

A reason for the Bond films eschewing from numbers or subtitles could be that, for a long while, film studios avoided them. IIRC it was because they believed potential audience members would be turned away, like “Part 2? I didn’t see Part 1 so I’m not going to understand what’s going on. I’ll pass.”

    • @andrewklang809
      @andrewklang809 Před 2 lety +1

I think that one-word titles are overly-done as it is. "Quantum of Solace" wouldn't have been pretentious if the story and advertising made the most of it. Instead, we got entirely different forms of pretension. What's the point of having the film's action scenes being based around the four elements? What does that have to do with anything? Did Forster think people are likely to notice that on their own, or did he just want to feel clever when he points that out? Also, the florid location text. Why? It's clearly just there to draw attention to itself, not the story.

    • @jamesatkinsonja

I think the phrase 'Quantum of Solace' fits in with other 'phrase' titles like 'A View to a Kill' and the idea Bond is looking for 'solace' [as shown by the coda] so is fine to me.

Also, Risico really does scream out to be made into a film. I mean, they could take from Diamonds are Forever novel and bring in the Sprang Brothers and tweak Specteville and go from there lol. But in all seriousness, I'd love if Risico had its own movie of sorts.

Among the list of Albert Broccoli produced films, the ones that might work I'd list as follows: "Hell Down Below", "A Prize of Gold", "High Flight", "The Red Beret" and "Fire Down Below". I'd add that the US title of "Trials of Oscar Wilde" was "Man with a Green Carnation", and I feel "Green Carnation" sounds vague enough to work.. "When the Snow Melts" was his biography (published after his death), which sounds like Bond (I could easily see "Melting Snow" or something along those lines as a Bond title). As for non-Fleming books, "Licensed renewed" would fit a reboot, "Nobody Lives forever" and "Death is forever" are ironic (and just sound like Bond), "Scorpius", "Seafire" and "Brokenclaw" just sound cool, "Never Dream of Dying" and "High time to kill" both fit the death theme, "Trigger Mortis" sounds cool, "Forever and a Day" and "With a Mind to Kill" could also work. 1:31 Similar to how 'Shatterhand' was speculated as the title for Bond 25 but was officially denied, I seem to recall 'Risico' talked about in the tabloids for Bond 22 [which became Quantum] but it was ruled out as 'Risico was already adapted for For Your Eyes Only'. I can't find that story online so maybe it wasn't true but it would fit why Quantum got the nod instead and why 'Risico' and 'Property of a Lady' [Octopussy] haven't been used]. Property of a Lady came up again for the 3rd Craig film in the tabloids which of course was actually called Skyfall.
8:15 Apparently they can't do this as Eon only have rights to Flemings work [in a deal done when he was still alive] and nothing else, so they'd have to buy the rights to use those titles so it's cheaper to come up with there own! I know they did that for 'Bourne Legacy' [which was a continuation book but they ditched the story].
8:49 They did use the title for the 2012 documentary on the series but that wouldn't stop them reusing it for an actual Bond film.
8:55 At least the meaning behind sister company 'Danjaq'-which hold the movie copyright and trademark for Bond is clear as it was named after the producers wives [Dana Broccoli and Jacqueline Saltzman]. Dana also of course being Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli's mother.

The overall Miami Vice vibe and the late "Eightieness" has much in common with todays aesthetics and makes the movie surprisingly modern looking. Sancez' Suits are Amazing! The montage and the overall pacing feels very modern and we alle loved the harder edged vibe! By far John Glens best direction, very stylish cinematography, near perfect montage. Michael Kames score is Top 5 Bond. If you turn up the contrast on your TV and bring down the brightnesss a bit you can get rid of that "unfinished look". After that you can really enjoy all the colours and deapth of the frame created by Alec Mills. Maybe an advice for your review to get it better looking.

'The Secret Agent' is a title I could realistically see being used for Bond 26 actually. It sounds very "first movie"-ish and also calls back to Casino Royale and Bond's origin without just being, well, Casino Royale. Plus it's not too far off from 'The Batman' in speaking of franchise reboots

007 in New York was kind of adapted as the ending to the film Quantum of Solace. While I think it could still be a good springboard to a larger story, I completely agree on the title!

Coming up with Bond titles is one of my favorite pastimes! Here's a few I had on my phone:
    Shoot to Kill
    Yesterday or Forever
    Forever and a Day
    Win, Lose, or Die
    Cold Blood
    Diamond Head
    Afterglow
And that's just the ones on my phone today!

Absolutely wonderful titles. Especially win, lose or die. Where you can choose a middle option

"Property of a Lady" is a dope title. It sounds a bit generic but at least audience members can go into the film already asking "what's the property and who's the lady?"

I still remember the ones I came up with when I was a teenager (late 90's):
    "How to Kill a Spy"
    "The Hearts of Egypt"
    "Death From Above"
    "Spygame"
"Skyfall" (hand on the Bible! if only I could find the notebook I wrote that one in!)

In fairness, there was also "Skybreaker," "Skyfire," "Skytracer," etc. Lol. Don't know which I would have settled on if they commissioned me (at 14) to make the movie. But I remember it was something of an obsession to imagine what my own Bond movie would be, but I never got much further than coming up with the title and trying to design the logos.

I originally thought of one called 'From death till dawn' a couple of years ago after listening to 'No time to die' by Billie Eillish. But maybe 'Red Blossoms in Autumn' might be a literally 'flowery' change of pace with sinister undertones. It would have a pretty high kill count for a Bond film and the main villain goes by the name of Red. Red would be an assassin type character who is similar to Scaramanga but is a lot more cunning and less arrogant. He would train a bunch of wannabe assassins to kill bond and eventually would reveal himself to be 'Red Grant' who is now the main villain as opposed to a henchman. There would also be a fight scene in an autumnal park setting in the early morning with his lackeys trying to ambush Bond (where Grant loosely (but not exclusively) kills whenever there is a full moon as part of an execution ceremony but breaks it whenever he feels threatened) which turns into a massive bloodbath where some characters get shot in poppy fields, hiding among piles of fallen autumnal leaves and the early morning ambience to show a lot of bloodshed.
The film would also alternate between the perspective of Bond and Grant, culminating them in fighting on a old rogue orient express cabin (that is violently moving fast and is about to cause a catastrophe by either colliding with an orient express engine from a newer model train, etc) where Grant is ultimately killed by bond from within that cabin by strangulation followed by a shot.

Risico would probably be my personal pick. I agree with you, Calvin. There's just something so cool about saying Risico, and I think it would be a good title

”The Property of a Lady” sounds like a Sherlock Holmes story.

I feel this is too backwards in creative thinking with good writing in the sense that all energy right now should just be put on the next story to make the best screenplay possible. Once you finish the story that ultimately ends with the last cut in post production editing, the title will find itself.

Something I think is possible is the next movie title coming from the dynamite comics, like Vargr or Eidolon. We live in an era of comic book movies so it's possible. I think it does come from the books it'll prolly be Risico but there's alot of really kick-ass titles that would be cool to see. Ones I'd especially like to see used are Trigger Mortis, Forever and a Day, Win Lose or Die, The Facts of Death, Death is Forever and High Time to Kill

Content aside, I'm a big fan of "James Bond-esque" phrases, such as Devil May Care, that I wouldn't mind something like that. "Nobody Lives Forever" and "All or Nothing" are similar phrases that could fit a Bond film.

  • @forenichtreader

Risico is definitely the best option. Property of a Lady could work too, particularly as it has two 'o' letters which could be turned into '007' on the movie's logo - it would probably need to be used with an already-established Bond actor though (not on their first outing).

  • @Phovhan

Great video Calvin, as always. 'Everything or Nothing' hadn't occurred to me and would work well I think. Risico is nice but would confuse people, and a title needs to sound 'Bondian' in a more obvious way. But the obvious choice given the re-boot would be 'Licence Renewned'
