It was history in the making as the Salem Spartans put cleats on the turf of Williams Stadium. With a shot to win their 11th State Championship, and first since 2020 - their toughest challenge would wait in what was a game that will be discussed for decades.
The undefeated Phoebus Phantoms, who moved up to Class 4 following back-to-back Class 3 titles were also looking to make history of their own as they awaited their toughest challenge yet against the Spartans of Salem.
It would be the 757 vs the 540 once again in a VHSL Class 4 State Championship Clash - a game that would all come down to a complete battle in the trenches.
Phoebus would strike first following a 7 minute drive to start the first half, as they prepared to set the tone for this battle. These two teams would continue to exchange blows for another quarter and a half - until it was the Spartans who would return the points following a huge interception by Chris Cole and a touchdown by Peyton Lewis before the half.
The same battle would pick right back up as these two teams took the field for the second half of play. The 3rd quarter featuring dominant contests in the trenches featuring some of the most talented players in the state of Virginia.
The 4th quarter featuring fireworks as Phoebus would strike for the second time of the day to go up 8 on the Spartans - but Salem wasn’t done yet. Following a late 4th quarter push by the Spartans it was Salem’s Jayveon Jones that would shove another 6 on the board, and to follow - a thrilling 2 point conversion as Eli Taylor connected with Josiah Moyer.
As under a minute would remain on the clock, it would seem as this game was headed to overtime until Phoebus would make the thrilling last chance play, breaking free for the end-zone - leaving only 0:01 left on the clock.
It was a hard fought game featuring discipline and dominance, but it was heartbreak that would strike the Spartans in the end as Phoebus would win their 3rd straight title with a final score of 21-14.
In a game that will be remembered forever, these two teams wrote state championship history in their own respective ways.
