This, all of these Grodin clips are still so sad for me to watch? He also represents a whole era of happiness for me. RIP Mr. Grodin. I have so much respect for your intelligence & your subtle humor. He's is sorely missed !
This is why Carson was truly without equal -- still to this day -- he was not reading a script or pretentious or playing host like an actor. He was genuine and spontaneous
R.I.P. Charles Grodin. This interview is awesome. Very Hollywood insight as to the image of self, as to why Hollywood celebrities appear on these talk shows.. Burt Reynolds is the classic example explained by Charles Grodin.. “Self image” start at 09:42.. Let’s show everyone who we really are on talk shows..the movie we were just in isn’t me.. It’s a movie..
Charles and Johnny were actually good friends and played poker together. So Johnny knew Charles well enough but did get lost in Charles once in a while. You can see Charles loved seeing Johnny at a lose.
It just struck me after all these years how humble Carson was with his guests. He was truly receptive to his guests in a way they so many interviewers are not. Think Charlie Rose, who seemed always to be jumping on his guests words.
I was too young to have watched a single episode of Carson live, but I did get to enjoy a lot of Letterman and Conan. I love them both, but this is the master, as seen by conversations like this.
Two masters of their game...Grodin was one of the best talk show guests, and Carson was simply the best...ever.
Carson and Grodin together....some of the best comedy EVER!!!! Miss them both.
RIP Charles Grodin. You were so funny.
Him and Bill Murray are my all time favorites ..
I did not realize he recently died.. Thank you for the FYI.. 86 though, not shabby..
Uniquely funny
I love him in Heaven Can Wait
But more so in midnight run.
You can see Deniro cracking up with Grodins improv
Johnny was hilarious whenever Grodin was is the chair. He was like a catalyst - it's amazing.
Exactly he knew what Johnny could do if given the right opportunity
Grodin always delivers on these interviews.

R.I.P. Charles Grodin.

Charles is from Pittsburgh and we're proud of him. Awm
RIP Charles
Awesome interview.

"Canceled?" is one of the greatest punchlines I ever heard.
RIP 😞
RIP Charles Grodin
Carson was great cuz apart from being sharp and funny, he comes across very genuine, contrary to modern late night show fakery.
It just struck me after all these years how humble Carson was with his guests. He was truly receptive to his guests in a way they so many interviewers are not. Think Charlie Rose, who seemed always to be jumping on his guests words.
That "Are you whispering?" was hilarious..
RIP❤️
CARSON..THE BEST...
Nearly 40 years ago eh? . . . Wow!
Charles makes Johnny nervous and it creates great comedy .
I doubt he was nervous. Sinatra, Ball and some of the other maybe.
RIP 💜
“Fred you wanna put the stamps away and talk to me a second?”. Killer line!
Just as good as the Tomohawk Throw line! Johnny was the best at spontaneous comedy!
Just amazing timing, Johnny had... Same with the timing of "..canceled?". :)
Notice also that's the first time I ever heard Grodin actually LOL. almost never breaks; in all these interviews!
The playful banter and teamwork these men had with each other was classic. I watch these men talk for the whole show.

Man do I miss Carson when late night TV hosts weren’t all putz’s

i believe johnny really saw charles as a bit of an equal and a challenge
I knew it. Charles Grodin was plugging his “Burt Reynolds look”.
Charles Grodin R.I.P.
47 years old,looked like 35..
"Fred, you wanna put the stamps away and talk to me for a minute?" LMAO 🙂
04:24 "Jeff Seinfeld is coming out later" LOLOL

2:06 Carson didnt even really flinch - this must have been a bit.

But it’s a wig…
