  • Toronto music producer and audio engineer 5PiECE shows you how to save and send a Pro Tools session to another Pro Tools user.
    This method allows you to copy all of your files and important data so the person on the receiving end can open up the session and see it exactly as you last left it.
    This is the ideal method to use when sending files to another person that will be editing and/or mixing your files, such as an audio engineer.

    If you send the session by clicking “audio files” when you ‘save copy in’, does it also send all the same plug ins and plug in settings that you used in your session? Or do you have to also check the boxes that say “session plug in settings folder” and “root plug in settings folder” if you want someone to be able to pull up all of your same plug ins and plug in settings?

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 3 lety

    When doing it this way does the person who receives the file be able to view the plugins, sends etc that you last used

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 2 lety

      They should be able to assuming that they have the same plugins. If they don’t, the plugins would be greyed out and inaccessible until they install those plugins. Sends are generally preserved when sending sessions.

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 3 lety

      That can’t be right. I’ve used both Mac and PC and always had this option. This is usually under File > Save Copy In, same location as the other Save options. I’m not sure though if different versions of PT don’t have this feature, such as Pro Tools First etc. Hope this helps.

    Why does Pro Tools delete the audio files out of my session when I complete and save it?

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 2 lety

      Could be a number of things going wrong. It’s very likely you may not be importing them correctly so that the files never got copied into your session in the first place, or you may have your root folders set up incorrectly so it’s looking for audio in the wrong place.
      Each of these requires its own solution and this comment won’t really be enough to go over it all BUT to be safe, when you’re done a session, do a FILE>SAVE COPY IN and make sure you select to copy all audio files. This will essentially create a new version of your session with all of the audio files housed and contained within it, so that way it should open without issue. Open and use this session moving forward
      Otherwise, make sure when you’re recording audio that your root folders are set up to the right place so that they save within your sessions Audio folder. Also make sure when importing audio that you copy it into that same Audio folder. These are likely the problems you’re really suffering from but they’re pretty easy to fix.

  • @ECDBRACINGLEAGUE

    Bro mine doesnt have save as copy option. And how do you extend your audio the full width of timeline

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 3 lety

      What version of PT are you on? And what options do you have aside from Save & Save As?
      As for the 2nd question - what do you mean exactly? If you mean to extend a file so that it doesn't end at a certain point, then you just have to ensure the smart tool is enabled (press and hold F6+F7+F8 at once to do this) and when you scroll to the end of an audio file, a little bracket looking symbol will appear which will allow you to extend the audio. This is assuming the audio is long enough to be extended. You can't extend something after it's ended, all you can do is copy+paste and/or duplicate sections to create your own extended version, which is what I usually do. Hopefully this makes sense.
      You may want to consult the Pro Tools message boards as well as I've been using Pro Tools 10 for years (I haven't upgraded YET) so some things may be different in updated versions. Good luck.

      @@5piece Same question as James. I'm using Pro Tools first, the options are Save, Import, and export

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 3 lety

      @@RealEyez Not 100% sure as I don't use Pro Tools First - but from what I've found online Googling this for you, I found this:
      "you're limited to only working on projects that were made in First. You can import audio files, or send them, but the sessions themselves can only be opened in First (with Cloud saving, so I believe you can open the session on another rig, but still within a version of First)"
      I would imagine for that reason, the way PTF saves files is different and self-contained, making what I show you in this lesson irrelevant in your case.
      I encourage you do some more research on your own to find the definitive answer, this is almost completely a guess. Hope this helps.

    Do the plug-ins stay on your tracks?

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před rokem

      Yes, they should unless you remove them before going through this process. Whether or not the person you're sending it to HAS the actual plugins, is another potential issue. You can also always right click your track (with the plugins) and commit it to audio before going through this. That would be the most "fail-safe" approach

  • @alittleblackcircle3628

    I’ve seen people recommend consolidating every track from start to finish and deleting any unused audio tracks. Would you recommend this?

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 5 dny +1

      I'd say so, just to minimize confusion and avoid problems (such as someone accidentally moving a short clip after opening the session without realizing). Truthfully, I need to revisit this video again as its a few years old now but hopefully this helps.

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 3 lety +1

      Are you talking about how to send yourself an audio file? Because thats pretty easy - upload it to DropBox, Google Drive, WeTransfer, etc tons of file services out there both free and paid. If you have a smartphone, upload it to your phone directly or use AirDrop on iPhone to send yourself the file from your computer. I personally use an iPhone 11 and constantly AirDrop myself mixes to test them out in the car, etc.

    Yk how to get a session from Protools to fruity loops?

    • @5piece
      @5piece  Před 2 lety

      These are 2 different DAWs so it’s not exactly an easy fix.
      There are some new tools out there (that I haven’t tried) that may help such as Satellite Sessions from the folks that make Mixed In Key.
      However, most of the time when collaborating with other creators in different DAWs, we just bounce down stems as WAV files and import them. So for example, I’d bounce my individual trackouts as WAV files from PT, then an FL producer would import those stems and the tempo and get to work.
      Best of luck!

    You should make an important note that this video is truly only 1/2 the story and many people who watch this will be sorely disappointed and left hanging if you don't highlight the fact that this short lesson of yours does not include MIDI files. Even the most novelist Pro Tools users will have both WAV (audio) files AND MIDI files. This video shows them how to save only the audio files and if they do this thinking their whole session has been copied, they will be sorely disappointed when they learn that all of their tracks containing MIDI data will not be included. They have the take the important second step in exporting all of their MIDI tracks and possibly including a quick reference explaining which VST instruments they used for each of those tracks (in hopes that the person on the receiving end has those same virtual instruments or something close). If they don't do that, they will have to copy all of their MIDI tracks over to audio tracks, and then follow your video which refers to only audio tracks. It is amazing how many of these "Save a Pro Tools Session" videos there are on CZcams and ALL of them literally seem to be oblivious of the fact that not all music creators use ONLY audio/wav files for ALL of their tracks.

      Your response is true to your name; very sour in tone. Considering you have zero content out there helping others with this matter, you really come off as "high and mighty" looking down on us lowly content creators who are actually putting ourselves out there to HELP individuals like you. Judging by the upvotes vs downvotes and comments, this video has clearly helped many with this problem.
      Despite that, you DO have a valid point related to MIDI and third-party VST plugins that not every user will have. This lesson IS primarily related to recording audio and sending files for mixing/mastering especially.
      What you explained requires even more explanation, a lot of "if this then that" type of stuff. IF you have MIDI compositions that you haven't rendered / committed to audio, THEN you need to do the steps you mentioned.
      Me personally? I almost never have MIDI in my sessions, and considering I do this for a living and have mixed for hundreds if not thousands of artists in Pro Tools at this point, I would consider myself beyond a "novelist." Yet I have never really encountered the issue you describe as if it was commonplace for all. Perhaps a sequel to this video is in order (thanks to YOU for the inspiration!)
      I think what your saying is most applicable to people who are producing and collaborating in Pro Tools using MIDI, and have no idea how to commit audio (simple right click + commit) yet want to share files with other collaborators.
      In my experience, I don't know many producers making beats/productions in Pro Tools. Of course that doesn't mean they don't exist - but what your saying is really only applicable to those composing in Pro Tools, while I would argue that more of their user base is recording, editing and mixing down audio; whether thats for film/TV and/or music.
      Overall, thanks for watching, and for the future content ideas. Best of luck :)

      I've never encountered someone not having that option unless it was a circumstance like that, or they were using cracked software.
