I am addicted to Hawaiian vacations and Hilo truly feels very much Hawaiian. It isn't overrun by tourism and still feels very authentic. I wish I could call Hilo my home : )
I love your Aloha spirit my mother is from Maui and my grandparents are from Kauai. Watching you makes me miss the islands and family. Thank you for sharing my brudda.
KJ i was there last week! Stayed at the Hilo Hawiian with a view of the bay. LOVED IT. Got some dirty looks from some of my Hawaiian brothers but i don't care i know some of us tourists are annoying. Spent a lot of money and met many many welcoming and friendly Hawaiians. Ill keep coming as much as i can to visit as i love this island. Ill continue to tell the Haole to stay off the corral when snorkeling. Thought about this video when i saw the kids jumping off that tower on Saturday. Would have loved to hang out with you.Mahalo
My wife and I just returned from a two week stay in Hilo Town. We love it. We also ate at the Kuhio Grill run by the Araki family. I was surprised to learn that because I used to stay at Tom Araki's old bungalows in Waipio Valley back in the early 1980's surrounded by kalo. It was a good staging ground for hiking into Waimanu. Thanks for the wonderful video...missing Hilo already and only been back here in the mainland three days.
You're welcome. Thank you so much for watching. One of the Araki girls that are taking over the business is a classmate of mine from high school. They're a nice family.
Aloha ronkreed. Thank you for subscribing. I love cruising out to Ninole, I used to have family that lived in Laupahoehoe. I think you just gave me an idea for upcoming videos.
Please keep your Aloha. We on the mainland, not much Aloha going on right now. Love our Hawaiian friends. Oh, how I miss the food too! The best food in the whole world, in my opinion. How I miss the taco, ahi,...all the poke styles. Fresh Ono, etc. Thanks for sharing.
Mahalo! I'm watching this as I'm packing my bags to move to the big island. I found out on this Friday and leaving tomorrow from California for a project that's gonna last 8 months. I'm looking forward to being out there and will definitely check out these spots that you mentioned. much love and see y'all soon!
Hawaiian On The Move: I enjoyed this very much! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I would like to see more of Hilo. Perhaps a video on things for us older folks to see and do. No strenuous hiking. Hoping to spend a day or two in Hilo after that pesky virus COVID19 is through.
16:57 I walked through that market while I was on the Island. And the Store with the Parking lot after that is where I parked to get some drinks. Good memories.
Mahalo for a wonderful video. I havent been to the Big Island yet, but Im planning a trip soon. I really appreciate all the history you showed and I will definitely be visiting those places. Gonna skip swimming in the Boiling Pots though!
I appreciate you friend. This is just what I wanted to find to learn more about Hilo because I might move thereo very soon. Thanks for the first hand perspective, very informative!
yeah maybe, good spots to hang out, the city centre, parks and activities, recommended places for adults/students. we love the coconut legend! keep them coming man, thanks
Hey there! We’re going to Hilo next week, and we love your videos! Any chance you would be a tour guide for an hour or two, focusing on local food and beverages, and your awesome stories? Would be so fun to see how the locals see the island!
I was born in Hilo HI in 1949, at the old Pu'umaile Hospital by Rainbow Falls, & lived in Keaukaha, across the point between Leileiwi & Richardson's Beach Park! My father's office was on Waianuenue Ave, across the Public Library (spent lots of time there), went to Hilo Union Elem, Hilo Intermediate, & Hilo High (1967 grad). Your food are my favorites...how much$? Ono-licious, yeah! Fellas, too many died at the BPots (rope net sling at 🌈 Falls to catch bodies, so they don't go out Wailuku River to the ocean bay). I also lived in Wainaku on Ewaliko Ln; saw lots of eruptions & the 1957 & 1960 Tsunami 1st 2 waves come in...then did fast run up Wainuenue! Lived through lots of historical things there. If interested, try contacting me re events, places, people, etc on Hawaii Island. Thanks for the video post!
I am lover of rain very much, so i am thinking of residing there my later half of life. Probably best place as its not too forest like other rainfall areas, i am definitely gonna arrive there. and Thanks for the wonderful video. Which I say but probably not gonna happen.
Howzit Bruh? Love your videos! Respect man! Just got back from Big Island and missing the Aloha. Wish we had seen these before we came to Hilo. We love Hilo! Respect The Kennett Family
Aloha HawaiianOnTheMove. This video popped up on CZcams. I haven't seen it in about 4 years. Did You quit doing videos? I missed the Big Island(Hilo side). Lots happened with the volcano starting in Leilani Estates where I use to live going down to Pohiki. We use to go down to Pohiki when Uncle Hale used to be alive and lived right there. Good old days. Make some more videos, Aloha.
I've been trying to find different videos that would explain Hilo to me and this is perfect :) If things go as planned i will be going to the University at hilo and will be moving to live in Hilo :) Thankyou for sharing all your knowledge of Hilo!
You're welcome. I've never been a student of UHH but from what I gather from my friends, it's a cool school. It's not really a wild and out party college but there is some night life here although little but it's here. I've been kind of busy but I'll make some more videos of Hilo in the future. Have fun when you get here!
That was exactly what i was hoping for. I received a letter from them in the mail yesterday and it explained how it has small classes and a wonderful, peaceful night life. I've never been the type to want that party all night/city feel. I am very excited to become a part of the Hilo community. Hopes to see more of your videos in the future, i'll make sure to have tons of fun exploring these places you showed in the video! :)
Nice video! I liked how you did an interview in the beginning. It's a refreshing twist on CZcams videos about Hawaii. :) I would totally pay you to give me a tour of these places when I visit ha you do a great job! Looking forward to more videos
I'm going to hilo for a family reunion this summer with my boyfriend, so have been looking at travel videos for ideas on what to do... It's nice to see a video on hilo from a local :) very unique and informative and you sound like such a nice person
I lived in Keaukaha back in 1958... Liliuokalani Gardens was so beautiful then... I don't remember so many ponds of water but probably because it was before tsunami... enjoyed your authentic Hawaiian music in the background... is there a swimming area called "awilis"? don't know if I have spelled it correctly. aloha!
KiaOra from Aotearoa my cousin, Awesome respect to you and Hawaii. Great video and good on you for promoting your home. I would like to visit there one day its on my bucket list, actually its a wish list now as my family gets bigger my budget gets smaller. If you haven't already could you include some accommodation for visitors in your videos please, cheers from mount Maunganui. 11/03/2018. 12:00pm.

Sorry to hear about the white hell you're stuck in. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your time here on the big island. If you're thinking about retiring in the big island, hilo does make a good option. It's a tough decision to make between Hilo and Kona.
I have been to All the Islands and have lots of Friends and Family on the Islands. Big Island is my favorite. I love the Pokie , and the Mac is SOO good, been to the grill, Great Vid Bro mahalo
zeusdogdog Hey man! Glad you enjoyed the Big Island above the others. Did you take pictures of Pahoa? The way the current lava flow is going, any past pictures of Pahoa may be a collectors item. Cheers dude, come back soon.
Aloha Carolyn, I'm glad you enjoyed the hawaiian music. I don't know of a swim spot named awilis. Although, for as long as I lived here I am still finding swim spots that I have never been to so I'll check with my friends. If I find any news I'll let you know.
Love you guys and Hilo have been there over 10 times in the last 17 years but you need a new camera man LOL when the girl is pointing to the fishermen that was funny.
Thank you for your personal touch to this video. Can you suggest areas in Hilo for housing in proximity to Hilo Medical Center that is walkable/bikeable? I am interested in a position at the medical center. Thanks so much!
9:10 Ronson should be an actor He'd be good at deadpan humor. I wanted to visit Hilo for some time. Covid-19 happened and now it looks like I may have to wait till next year.
I got stuck in one of those pools at the end of your video during a visit and It started to pour heavy rain, it was a long way back uptake hike so I decided to wait it out and I sat on a rock getting eaten by mosquitos from hell! I had no choice, it was super heavy with rain and I was far from the hike path. After 15 minutes It stopped and by then I was bitten all over.
KJ, hopefully I'm not asking for too much but I would love to link up with you. I'm on Oahu and I have been in Hilo and would love to visit again. I was wondering if you can show me around? Mahalo.
HawaiianOnTheMove I saw your other video that you now live in kailua-kona. I understand brother, no worries. Thanks for getting back to me. I'm considering on moving to big island. Kind of want to get away from the crowds here on oahu. Mahalo, brother. Please make a video about the kona side! 😁🤙
Do NOT swim at Boiling Pots! Seriously, many lives have been lost there. Don't even think about it! Sure, some will post that they've done it, but they can't help you if the "Boiling" currents stuff you under a ledge, which is where Fire/Rescue divers find victims. Come visit, have a nice time, stay safe. Aloha!
It took 20 yrs to build da break wall from 1909-1929. It's 1.8 miles long. The break wall was buit to keep the water in the bay calm so ships docking at da pier could do so with ease. Tsusamis that came through after da breakwall was built still decimated Hilo inspite of da wall being there.
Can you tell me who the artist is singing at end of your video? I know the song is Hilo Hanakahi but haven't been able to find this particular version. Mahalo!
thank you for the video! do people bicycle much on the big island? i don't mean off road stuff i mean just on the roads, in the towns and city... is it safe? are there bike lanes? do motorist speed? wife and i are moving there to be with the grandkids janurary 2018 thanks .... mahalo
Google Mid Pacific Wheels in Hilo and contact them. It's better you get that info from a bike shop instead of me. I can tell you this, big island has the most dangerous roads in the state and there has been vehicle/bicycle fatalities.
Have you been to Hilo before? Do you have friends and family here? I encourage all to visit Hilo for an adventure getaway. However, as a place to live I advise people whether it be Hilo or anyplace else in the world to visit the place first and get a feel of the place. Get to know their traditions and customs, if their traditions and customs are much different than yours, decide whether or not you can tolerate it. If you're buying property do not seek advice and information from the realtor because they will give you answers that will be geared to convincing you to move here rather than to give you the truth, both the bright and dark side of the area. One big mistake "out of towners" do here that I see very often is that they move into a neighborhood that has a way of life very different from their own and they try to force their neighbors to conduct themselves the way they are accustomed to, and if it doesn't work they call the cops and try to get the cops to force people who lived in their community for over 20 years to change their routine to comfort the new neighbor. Yes we in Hilo believe in the Aloha spirit, but that goes for both Local and Newcomer. If you decide to live in a neighborhood with a lot of dogs or farm animals, be aware that there will be a lot of noises at night and be well aware that most of the neighbors are okay with that, don't be that neighbor that can't sleep at night and calls the cops on his neighbors because their dogs are barking. If you like the quiet areas look for a neighborhood that seems to have less animals and the neighbors are more isolating, but keep in mind you will also need to have good home security because less noisy animals and secluded neighbors means good target for burglars. Do you have a job in place? If you're thinking about opening a business here I would have to say chances of success are really low. Hawaii as a whole is voted worst place to have a business in the USA and jobs in Hilo are hard to come by unless you are a doctor or a nurse or a certified teacher then we have a lot of need for that. As far as coming to Hilo or anywhere else on the Big Island as a place to visit I can highly recommend that but as a place to live I can only say visit this place first, Spend a few weeks and really get to know this place before deciding to live here. I lived here since I was 9 years old when I moved here from Honolulu. I don't think I would have wanted it any other way.
Kicked out after high school, moved away to experience life, and now greedy flippers and investors jacked up the housing prices so much I can't even get a decent house in Hilo. I will come home, I will come home.
If you move into a neighborhood that has barking dogs, I suggest you tolerate it. Don't be that new neighbor that complains and calls the cops for a simple barking dog. Easiest way to make not so friendly neighbors.
The overall island median is 350K. The more affordable places to live are in the Puna district and a subdivision called ocean view. Rule of thumb, the cheaper the land, the more susceptible crime is to happen. Crime is everywhere but overall on big island it's low. Hilo is one of the rainiest towns in the world, if that's the kind of weather you like, then look further into researching about Hilo.
Oh my gosh. Stumbled upon this today looking for old Hilo videos. Right on! I love it! Good seeing old high school people! 🎉
Nice video! This is like watching your favorite cousin show you their favorite new spot. I love it!

thank you for the video! do people bicycle much on the big island? i don't mean off road stuff i mean just on the roads, in the towns and city... is it safe? are there bike lanes? do motorist speed? wife and i are moving there to be with the grandkids janurary 2018 thanks .... mahalo
Google Mid Pacific Wheels in Hilo and contact them. It's better you get that info from a bike shop instead of me. I can tell you this, big island has the most dangerous roads in the state and there has been vehicle/bicycle fatalities.
thank you and best of life for you
i'm thinking to move to around hilo? what do you think?
I don't think I would have wanted it any other way.
can you please tell me about the rain? is it all year round? rain every day?
Love the video but can add some more cheerful guy as guest, someone more cheerful and talkative?
Nomadic Mario I can see why you got stuck getting eaten by those mosquito's
use your head bruddah
Kicked out after high school, moved away to experience life, and now greedy flippers and investors jacked up the housing prices so much I can't even get a decent house in Hilo. I will come home, I will come home.
Pretty cool video, I guess its because you weren't trying to sell anything?
I'm moving to Hilo in 2 months from New York. Any tips you can give
If you move into a neighborhood that has barking dogs, I suggest you tolerate it. Don't be that new neighbor that complains and calls the cops for a simple barking dog. Easiest way to make not so friendly neighbors.
HawaiianOnTheMove that's the best tip you can give me. What's the good areas to move 2 or anything else that is valuable

Thanks. I'm not much of a salesman.

Cool...
I worry bout your diet. I'm vegan now, much less volume food, cuz it's not so dense. Vegans are very calm and thoughtful.
It was hard to make the change a little at first
I would recommend Maui hilos too wet too much vog too many bugs nearly no sunshine
To each their own 😎
Niga higa hometown
Yup. He's a Hilo Icon.
Only reason why I want to come here is to meet some Japanese girls. Am I in for a treat?
I wouldn't suggest Hilo for that. Try Waikiki
Breakwater wall built after 1940 Tsunami.
