  • I've been watching this puffball mushroom growing in my neighbors backyard for a week. Having never eaten a puffball before I decided to give it a try. See how I prepared it and what I thought of it!

    You can also cut the giant puffballs into slices with the skin and freeze them. The taste and consistency with the skin are better preserved. greetings from Germany. puffball pizza is great.

    Beautiful mushroom at least it didn't go to waist! 🐓

      We try not to let anything go to waste here 😊 I even took the remaining slices that I didn't cook and spread them in different areas of the yard and hopes that the spores will propagate new mushrooms next year.

    I have never had it but suspected it would be a texture thing. Good you tried and now you know

      I'll try it again someday but next time I'll bread and pan fry it!

    we have always done our's in the frypan on the kitchen stove in covered in flour & cooked in butter. we love them! Blessings...

      No that sounds good! If I fried them they'd have the crunch I was hoping for! I'll try that next time. 😊

    Loved how that outer layer of the mushroom so easily peeled off.

    We have made mini pizzas using a large puffball slice as the crust. Turned out good!
    Also, I was not much of a mushroom person until I tried roasting regular button mushrooms (halved, olive oil, salt, 425C, 45 min). Life-changing...

    • @TheGreenAcreWI
      @TheGreenAcreWI  Před 2 lety

      I've heard of people using puffball slices as crust to make pizzas. So long as it's "crusty" in texture when done I'm sure it turns out great! I don't mind the taste of mushrooms but it's totally a texture thing for me. I don't like the rubbery feel in my mouth of certain mushrooms. I'm going to try pan frying breaded puffball slices next time to try and give them more of a crunch!

      @TheGreenAcreWI  Před 2 lety +1

      Absolutely! Next time I'll try preparing it differently to achieve a crunchy texture that I personally would prefer 😊

      @@TheGreenAcreWI It's all about texture - Good luck! I wonder if it would be good in a soup/stew where the mushiness wouldn't matter?

  • @RobertasArtisticAdventures

    I love mushrooms, but have never tried a puffball. Will keep a watch out for some puffballs. The one you found grew to be quite large! What did you do with the rest of the raw slices of mushrooms?

    • @TheGreenAcreWI
      @TheGreenAcreWI  Před 2 lety +1

      I did some research and found that chickens can eat cooked mushrooms but couldn't find much information on feeding them raw mushrooms so I wasn't comfortable giving it to them. Instead, I took the raw slices and dispersed them in different areas of the yard in hopes that the spores might propagate new puffballs next year so I can try preparing them differently next time 🙂

    I genuinely like mushrooms, even though I’m allergic. I bet pan seared would be better. It honestly looked like you grilled some mozzarella slices lol

    • @TheGreenAcreWI
      @TheGreenAcreWI  Před 2 lety +1

      Bummer that you have an allergy to them! I think I may try breading a pan frying it next time for a better texture! The whole time I was working with the mushroom I couldn't stop picturing it as a huge ball of cheese 😂
