  • Oftentimes we're told that we should be sticking with the "RIGHT" neutrals based on our color seasons, but is that really feasible? In this video we chat about how using the "wrong" neutrals can add more visual interest to our outfits, and how we can make the best use of the existing neutrals in our wardrobe without being boxed in by our color seasons!

You nailed it when you paired the softer cool brown blazer for your coloring with the vest! Overall, I have a hard time with neutrals that are too muted or dusty. I usually disappear when wearing any type of beige or light gray. But, I can pull off anything in deeper cool tones, so I use black (all the time), grays, and white for my neutrals. Additionally, I don't mind adding a pop of camel color from the Deep Autumn season with black or denims. I am probably a deep or bright, but I have hazel eyes and a strong golden surface to my skin tone most of the year...even when using spf on a daily basis.

Being aware of the harmony between your best colors, outfit style and body shape is such a good point.
I'm supposed to be flamboyant natural and tend to be neutral warm but I have an edgy style and I go for dramatic lines and wear a lot of black and it just suits me so much better, it goes so well together. I'm not supposed to wear pencil skirts because it emphasizes my wide shoulders but because it works with my style and I have a strong dramatic essence it works much better than flowy skirts.
I need deep soft colors so I pick those that goes with my style so I mostly wear soft black, burgundy, forest green, olive green.
I used to be a bit lost because I didn't feel like myself with what was recommended to me. It's important to take a step back to see the whole pictures. Colors, lines, styles, shapes are in the end all ingredients for you to choose to make your own potion.
It's also interesting to see how people, regardless of their color season or style, tend to wear darker colors in winter and lighter colors in summer. I know that in the summer I sometimes feel the need to wear lighter colors like olive green or dusty pink eventhough it doesn't really suit my style or my need for contrast. For me the depth of the color is the most important characteristic but in the summer the softness of the color takes the upper hand. It's nice to also play with the different characteristics of your best colors.

Love this. The more I dive into all the nuances in what makes the colour seasons the sharper my focus gets on what works and what doesn’t. I prefer a neutral wardrobe but as a bright winter it makes sense to me now why I am always drawn to shiny things lol. If I wear an all black outfit, for instance, I always gravitate towards very shiny jewelry and patent leather shoes or shoes with some sort of bright, shiny metallic detail. I’ve recently started adding brighter colours in my makeup, which used to intimidate me, and it really brings it all together. I add a bright lip or a cool and bright blush and eye and it all comes together. I’ve also started adding subtle trim detail to some of my white shirts (which I love but they often don’t provide enough contrast unless I pair them with a navy or black which I don’t always want to do) around the collars to add more contrast. It’s subtle but boy does it make all the difference. Cool taupes and beiges and khakis keep my outfits from seeming too stark but keep warmth away. I also can wear gold as long as it’s very shiny and bright and that also adds a detail that isn’t stark the way silver sometimes does without leaning too warm or soft. I’m slowly adding a few brighter colours and this was helpful for me to think about how to make them work with my aesthetic which has always been very neutral based. Your content is setting a high bar in this area, Jenn. Your understanding of the topic is insightful and actionable.

Ah, neutrals. I struggle so much with them in the warmer months!
I'm either a bright or cool/true winter and black, charcoal gray and white all work well for me. But who wants to wear black or charcoal gray in summer? And I don't like investing in white pieces, really, as they are so easily stained beyond repair.
Navy blue is probably my best color and kinda works as a neutral, although it doesn't pair as well with black shoes/belts etc, which is a bummer. But again, it can look a little somber in hot summer weather, imo. But light grey, creme and pastels are definitely out.
I end up wearing a lot of dresses in bright and cool colors in summer, because nice basics you can mix and match are just hard to find for me.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the navy and black combo, although I agree that navy pants with a black belt is not so ideal. I pair my navy trousers with a VERY warm brown but since it's such a small part of the outfit, I don't mind the warmth!

I agree with Jenn. I love warm tan/cognac browns for accessories like shoes and bags - the contrast look so great with black and navy and a lot of other colours, and work well in summer. I really don't think it matters if they are warm and your colour season is cool. Complementary colours are great for accessories.

Yeah, true. Cognac with blue especially is a pairing I often see and like. I'm considering going that way. Just a bit reluctant, because I have very limited storage space and somewhat limited funds and investing in black shoes/handbags/belts just makes a whole lot more sense for me, overall. You know? If I buy a flat and a heeled pair of Cognac shoes, plus a handbag, plus two nice belts (wide and narrow), I'm looking at spending 600+€ for halfway decent quality. Less, of course, if it's second hand. And it's all going to be pieces that will not match with the rest of my cool+bright wardrobe. Sighs.
The frugal part of me balks at this and votes for just pairing blue and black and be done with it 😆

Great video! Yes to all the points you brought up. I definitely lean into neutrals when building a look, although I often have the urge to balance this out with a metallic and/or an accent color. As far as exploring the range I can play with, I'd say Caygill's emphasis on suitable neutrals for each seasonal type is among the most comprehensive I've seen to date. (I don't think I'd heard of black walnut as a color until I went down this rabbit hole.) Again, thank you!

Jenn, my complexion is super similar to yours even though I’m Caucasian and a little paler than you. But I also have this deep olive quality, I always looks like i am supposed to be a little darker but was not exposed to the sun enough. Temperatur is also not my most sensitive attribute but softness and depth are both important in combination, I could not pick a favourite. And I also need contrast. I was so hung up on finding my colour season that I went too extreme in temperature and ended up with a lot of oranges which are mostly a little to bright for me, now I stick to my more neutral deep soft colours and it actually looks colourful on me even though it’s barely colour :D like this really mellow plum or this soft deep moss. this khaki looks amazing on you, it’s also one of my best colours. Dusty pink is another favourite of mine, maybe you like it too :) best wished from Germany. I love your content

Im in the summer season and one-color focused outfits with different intesities is my fav way to go right now. So my bright purple button down is worn with a high neck muted purple top an my bright green trousers, that make me look like a clown on their own, with a black top and muted green jacket. Looking vibrant without the lifeless-mannequin vibe, that vibrant colors give me, was always a goal of mine. Yes,people tend to think"oh neutrals look good on everyone so there is no need to do the test the right neutrals".
I think when people want to creat a capsule wardrobe, they should using the colors of them season or 4-6 colors that share the same features,(depth, clarity or hue)is more easy combine the colors .
Is really interesting,is not related with the topic but u and I are in similar height but I could never pull oversized soo well like you!
About the contrast,I have some mixing feelings, because some people cant wear black(is easy for me to do the example) but is advise that the colors that are not your best colors should be weared far from the face ; that using that type of color wouldn't creat a disharmony or draw people eyes directly to the color? The same logic also applies to bright colors.
I like the idea of have a go-to outfit is really simple and easy and safe time💛.
I always tought you were a deep autumn 🤔.
Yes,people tend to advise u if you wanna look fashionable you should go for bright colors, but as we know, many people dont wear them simple because is too bright for them (not all).
Some People also think that knowing your season is confining yourself because of stereotypical style related with those colors, like summer only wear elegant style, spring youthfull, autumn boho and so on .
The topic that u introduce in the end,is what make very difficult to analize celebrities bcs they are so put together that the person just think:but the outfit is beautifull " or is very well coordinate. Yes if is a huge gap between the person and the outfit, will look more obvious ,like u said is start to be more obvous and can look like u r wearing your chieldrens outfit or mamas clothing😅.

As a Bright Spring i struggle alot with neutrals. Black is always a fail-safe option, i usually contrast it with a pop of colour near my face like a bright lip or shiny jewellery like gold hoop earrings or an elegant necklace.
I feel like i look horrible in beige, dove grey, camel, taupe etc 😅 instead i use colours like navy, khaki, charcoal or even maroon as kind of "base colours" though i dunno if you can call them neutrals?! But they can generally be easily paired with brighter, clearer colours. Eg. khaki pants with a sunflower yellow blouse, or a charcoal blazer with a mint green shirt (yes i routinely wear these kind of colour combos to work lol).
I am undecided on white. Ivory and sugar white does look good on me. But i do think optic white is a colour that looks good on VERY few people!! Can you pls do a video on which seasons/ traits can wear optic white, and which "shade" of white would suit each season best?? I think that would be very helpful for anyone planning a wedding too 😁 i remember shopping for materials for my own wedding! I tried out an optic white fabric against my skin and literally looked sick 😂 finally opted for sugar white which looked lovely...

I'm also a Bright Spring and I also use navy (a LOT) and khaki (bordering on "sage" and "mint"), less so charcoal and maroon (usually too muddy for me) as "neutrals". I also actually use lighter salmon pink as a neutral (my hair and teeth and skin have some red undertone in them, even though it's subtle, as for teeth, I only learned that when my dentist was trying to match some filling material to my natural teeth). If you haven't heard of Zyla's color theory, it may help determine what colors suit you much better than the "seasons" theory does, it's very "personalized" and you can do it yourself at home, it confirmed to me that I suit the colors that I'd known I love wearing and sort of explained why

I am brown, with a medium skintone, so i can handle depth of colour even if technically they aren't in my season (borrowing *SOME* earthy colours from Dark Autumn, and jewel tones from Winter, i guess)
My worst colour to wear is also my "favourite colour" since childhood 😆 which is purple! Soft lilac and lavendar shades are the worst i guess. I can "get away" with plum and violet but they are not my best colours. I just wear them anyway because i like them and who cares 😁
Most shades of pink are very nice - rose, coral, salmon pink, magenta. Cool bublegum pink, icy or pastel pinks (actually icy and pastel shades are not flattering on me in general) and purplish mauve i steer clear of...

My best neutral colors as a yellow-olive light skinned BS are navy, deep brown-black, charcoal gray-black, and especially a shade of dark green that leans cooler than “olive” but warmer than hunter green. Very distinct deep green thats like an evergreen shade I guess? My SIL had me wear that color as a bridesmaid. I loved it!! Maybe you could do that for a wedding? I can also do grape purple if it’s a saturated purple that’s deep. Dark gray-greens, dark green-blacks are also good. White and ivory are big no-no’s for me. Too light washes me out. Straight black is a bit too harsh, but better than white. I don’t like beiges or most browns on me. And grays have to be medium-dark value and warmer. So anyways, hopefully this is helpful!

I can and do incorporate deep and true Autumn browns when the rest of my colors lean more True Winter, so I agree the blanket ban lacks nuance. Black is still a good neutral for Deep Autumn and Bright Spring and white for Springs and lighter Soft Autumns.
