    I knew Jenn is going get fired on talking about anything related to weight here. I applaud your bravery. Asian here as well. Like your experience, it is totally normal for me to chat with my Asian girl friends about weight gain, weight loss, exercise, diet, wanting to look a certain way etc... No one judges you and no one thinks you are implying that they are too heavy, too skinny or looking a certain way. Just chit chatting, share experience. But with certain group of people, this is a mine field. You are safe with me, jenn.

      Asian here as well, and I very much agree with both of you that weight is a much more common and natural topic in Asian circles. However, there are also many different approaches to weight with Asians. I think if it’s a situation like you said, just friends chit chatting and no one’s judging each other or telling others they should lose weight, that’s great. No notes. But I’ve also experienced the other side of this growing up in Asia where the beauty ideal very much remains the skinny supermodel, and if you have even an ounce of fat then everyone and their mother will make comments to you (and your parents!) about how you should lose weight. I don’t think that’s a healthy or kind approach at all, and is in fact quite harmful especially to young kids. Just wanted to add my two cents about the negative side of this level of normalization of weight talk.
      I do think that in American society today, body positivity has overcorrected to the point where people don’t feel like they’re allowed to talk about wanting to losing weight, or even allowed to mention the issues objectively associated with obesity, and that’s not great either. Everything should be in moderation.

    • @stylemejenn

      💯 there is definitely a dark and toxic side to the culture as well, and you bet those that are the closest to us like our family will be the first ones to call out if we gain a hint of weight - been there! As you said I think there is a level of moderation that brings the best of both worlds 🙏

I want to be thin, very feminine looking, I feel great and look great. Don’t be hating if you can’t or don’t want to hold yourself to the same standards.

    I remember going to a gym and getting very hostile comments because I was already slim. But, some exercise is needed for weight maintenance, too, not just loss. I got the same thing going to a swimming pool. Nowadays, I just walk briskly in my neighborhood for an hour most days, and there are many others, some slender, some not so much, doing exactly the same thing, just to stay healthy. I easily lost 50 lbs. in a few years just doing this. Ironically, I began walking fast and breathing hard only to clear stubborn “chest-wall pain” from pneumonia a few months earlier, nothing else had worked. But I kept going after the pain was gone because I felt so much better and enjoyed it do much. No one was ever more surprised than me when I lost that first dress size, I didn’t expect it at all, walking is so fun and easy.

    Love this video! It's very down to earth, and certainly a refreshing way of viewing our eating habits and our relationship with our bodies. It's not really your usual subject, but I find it really important for regular people (not medical professionals) to share their perspective on this matter. I found this video especially pertinent because it's coming from someone who cares so much about style and outward appearance. Can't wait for your next one!

    Tip 1. Go on a diet only if you go for a short diet. It will only get rid of water retention but it will be a jumpstart.
    Tip 2. Use the scales to maintain awareness. Numbers are facts.
    Tip 3. Exercise your brain. It uses glucose.
    Tip 4. Nothing is new, you've already tasted the food. You don't need to eat. more.
    Tip 5. It's ok to want to be skinny.

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Just want to add a note here for Tip 3 is that it's not so much the amount of glucose that the brain uses that's important (because scientifically the amount used is very little), but it's about having the mindset that "something is better than nothing" and that all these micro-activities throughout your day can add up to something more significant :)

    We shouldn’t be ashamed to want to be slender, a reasonably low weight extends our life expectancy and improves our health greatly. I’m between 125 and 130 lbs., a healthy-looking enough weight for me, but I would still like to lose 10 more pounds. With a delicate, narrow frame like mine, I still look fattier around the trunk than I think is ideal. Average-and larger-framed woman can weigh more, but look more slender, especially if very fit, but I’ve never been very well-muscled, it’s just my body type. The smaller the bones, the lighter the musculature, too, usually. Because I’m 63, some parts of me do look a bit scrawny, like my upper chest and legs, but I still have excess abdominal fat I want to shed. It’s not at all healthy to carry excess fat there! The scrawniness in certain parts of me are from age-related hormone and therefore, collagen, loss, I didn’t have it when younger, even at much lower weights. These elements should be balanced to the most pleasing to ourselves alone! As for clothing sizes, I couldn’t care less what number or letter I am, they’re meaningless these days anyway, I’m could be anywhere from an XXS to an XL, depending on country of origin, brand, category of garment (top, dress, pants), cut and details, etc. in general, the cheaper the brand, the smaller the sizes run, also if they’re Southeast Asian-designed and -made, most people, manufactures, and even manufacturing equipment, like their knitting machines, are smaller there than many if us of us of Euro, or Afro descent.

    This is really helpful and where I'm at.
    I worked out and danced since I was in middle school. When I became an adult I'd hit the gym 3 days a week for an hour and dance 1-2 hours 2x a week for leisure. I loved exercise and I loved how powerful it made me feel especially when dealing with stress.
    I noticed in my relationship I ate more with my partner and abandoned my usual intermittent fasting I naturally did since high school. I just always felt sick and dizzy eating breakfast so my biggest meal was dinner with snacking throughout the day like on a bowl of pinto beans.
    But then... around 30 I noticed slight and steady weight gain following a separation and increased emotional stress in life. Then my appendix came out as I was just beginning graduate school so I began to abandon working out all together because I just got too busy. I was in a new relationship and my eating habits didn't change much since we pretty much ate as often as a guy gets hungry. I never re-established my old eating habits that I abandoned. Talk about codependent.
    But anyways, here's where it gets interesting. Around 32 my body started to change as if going through puberty. I can't describe it but I went from an overall fit slender and straight body to hips, breasts, and a double chin coming in. I felt off too. Hormonal and just masculine like. At the time I was consuming a lot of coffee with milk and switched to soy which I feel both these milks were working against me for sure. I'd go to the doctor regarding my body changing and the doctor literally told me "You're getting fat".
    Now I'm 37 and feel my hormones have leveled off a bit but the weight gain is at its all time highest. Looking back it took me 5-7 years of not working out and using healthy eating habits to undo what I was maintaining since middle school.
    The lucky part is I have a similar body type to my mom and I was able to compare my body in my 30s to what her body looked like in her 30s after having 3 kids and eating like we were poor, which we were. It's not too entirely different. We both got our hips in our 30s with and without kids (I don't have any yet), we both grew into our more womanly figures (though we long for our leaner thinner bodies), and we both have similar menstrual results.
    All this to say, I'm in a heavy place literally, but this video is exactly where I'm at today which is doing a little here and there does more than doing nothing. Yesterday I excitedly walked a mile and half at the park and then while watching Netflix in the evening I did some leg, ab, and arm exercises WHILE IN BED. I'm not skinnier but I do feel better, more energized, and more confident like I used to. I've implemented my old intermittent fasting rules (I didn't know that's what it was called when I was younger; I just listened to my body).
    Life sucks sometimes and really gets in the way of things but I show myself compassion and try to make better choices with every choice I get the opportunity for. Just last weekend I ate a bag of chips and a candy bar and felt so horrible and guilty... and honestly my body didn't feel good either. But I saw my nephew eating them and just didn't have the will power to resist. I was in a weak state when I binged. But now I can look at that episode and understand why I did it and pin it to my "Memory Catalogue of things not to do". Not to mention the heartburn that came after LOL
    BUT ANYWAYS I will say the one good thing that came from NOT working out all these years and gaining weight is I finally got to experience what it feels like to have breasts! I was always flat chested when I was skinny and now I have full Cs. Considering my mom got breast implants to move from an A cup to a C in her 30s, she should have just waited some time... maybe her breasts would have come in later. The other benefit I've noticed from getting heavier is I get sick/the flu a lot less than I did when I was skinny. Apparently, for me, being skinny, working out and eating healthier was not only suppressing my bodies' desire to grow into its womanly shape but it was also suppressing my immune system.
    The other odd thing is that we tend to see puberty as only happening once in a lifetime during our teens but puberty can happen at any age for any reason multiple times. I used to fear gaining weight when I was younger but when everything happened to set me into motion to gaining weight, I was able to stomp on that fear, figure out my new baseline, and learn to accept myself not being skinny. I think the experience of gaining weight was valuable for my development and self-esteem.
    Honestly, I know people who are skinny... can eat the worst things all the time and never put on a pound and then some people who are thicker or heavier and don't lose weight even though they eat healthy and workout. Maybe we can put more emphasis on "feeling healthy or unhealthy" rather than on appearance of healthy or unhealthy.

    Good practical advice Jenn. I find intermittent fasting (at least 12 hours without eating) is a good weight regulator and it gives the body a rest from processing food.
    I feel we have gone too far in normalizing obesity and some people will have shortened lifespans because of this. It’s also unhealthy to spend too much energy trying to be skinny. We have to meet somewhere in the middle and your tips help us move in that direction.

  • @the_thing_is_wild
    @the_thing_is_wild Před 3 měsíci +6

    Love your videos Jenn! Was surprised about this one but glad you made it as love hearing people's personal stories on weight loss :)
    I have researched that the brain can burn ketones as well as glucose (glucose being the preferred source but people on the ketone diet actually report increased mental clarity from that type of energy burned) so perhaps include that. I would love to find out studies about excess thinking and calorie burning as personally I know before I've had big papers due my hair gets greasy like I've been working out, and when I learn a new complex task (whilst eating the same amount) I do lose weight.
    Additionally, regarding your comment 'this food is nothing new/ special' I'm sure you don't want this tip -haha- but Dr Mindy Pelz suggests that if you fast for 48 hours you reset your dopamine receptors, and I've tried it and can personally attest to how much more amazing food tastes afterwards !

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Thanks for the tip on the 48 hour fast! I've tried Keto for a few months but my husband and I both being Asian and loving Asian cuisine it just was not feasible to omit rice / noodles all the time. I did find being on keto provided mental clarity though! It takes a bit of time to get used to but I liked the effect!

    • @the_thing_is_wild
      @the_thing_is_wild Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@stylemejenn Ahh I agree! I wouldn't actually advise women to always go on the keto diet because for the second half of our cycles we need glucose for progesterone to correctly shed our uterine lining (and progesterone also doesn't like cortisol). Keto can work during the first half of your cycle bc estrogen doesn't mind cortisol and needs protein more than glucose. I personally love eating all sorts of food and find the best ways to maintain my weight are eating 30 different plants a week, dancing/ yoga and intermittent fasting (which apparently is best for your body if you vary the fast lengths).

    • @the_thing_is_wild
      @the_thing_is_wild Před 3 měsíci +3

    Appreciate the video! Unfortunately you are storing more fat on a high fat diet than on a high carb diet but you are also burning more fat on a high fat diet. The thing is burning fat does not equal fat loss and at the and of the day. Being consistent with whatever lifestyle you choose is the key to long term weight maintenance! And a scale is a great way to objectively check your weight! Indeed working out regularly, eating more protein and not overeating is key for loosing weight and maintaining the weight. Easy things to do and you don’t have to go crazy about it. I know a lot of women are struggling with weight so do I. Way can’t we talk about how to loose weight in an encouraging way instead of bashing someone for wanting to loose weight or avoiding to talk about the topic. Be positive about losing weight is healthy.

    Something is better than nothing and nothing is better than something wrong. In some cases, no, actually even in many cases, doing something can actually make things worse. Also, just yesterday heard a doctor mention that even intense brainwork requires no more than 4 g of glucose per hour, which is equal to approx 15 calories or 500 steps, so it's not really helpful for weight loss, at least directly.

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před 3 měsíci +3

      4g / 15 calories / 500 steps is still more than zero. It's exactly what I meant by the mindset of "something is better than nothing" - it's not so much the actual amount of glucose / calories / steps that we're focusing on, but the fact that we're doing SOMETHING, which can amount to more than we realize when these little activities add up throughout the day!

    I think it’s not that you can’t say you want to be thin, but rather that there’s some moral value/aspiration or desirability to thinness over other bodies. It is definitely the social norm, but should it be? That is why there is a taboo to make such a desire obvious.

    • @mimimimz6719
      @mimimimz6719 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Very good point. We correlate weight and outward appearance with so many things ( intelligence, capability, health, success...) which in reality are not necessarily related or dependent on each other. These types of obviously wrong views and beliefs are what we as a society should work on correcting and eradicating.

  • @JinxxSphinxx
    @JinxxSphinxx Před 3 měsíci +20

    I'm sorry, I love your content, but it's very dangerous to promote the idea that using more brain power will in any significant way reduce glucose... Every action done through the day burns calories, as well as mental activities of course, but the number is very low if there is a surplus of calories consumed present. Meaning someone can be obese and an active thinker or a genius. It's very dangerous to even imply (I know you didn't say this, that's why I said it can be implied) that fitter people are somehow 'smarter' or more active thinkers in any way. Not only dangerous, bit also incorrect.
    It's nice that you wanted to share your personal experience and some points you mentioned are objectively true, but you're not necessarily qualified and your audience could potentially be off put by this type of content, especially ones in a medical field or people with a history of ED/BD.
    Just my two cents! Not an attack on you personally! I really do love your channel ❤

      Thank you for being kind in sharing your thoughts ❤️
      My point is completely NOT related to anything about being “smarter” having anything to do with physical fitness - of course that is an entirely absurd and incorrect notion and there is no chance that I would stand behind an idea like that! As I’ve stated in the video the point I was trying to make is about having the mindset of “something is better than nothing.” As someone with a history of long struggles myself my intentions are not to appear as an expert in any way on this topic, but it’s merely me sharing my own experiences/ thoughts, unrelated to any sort of qualifications!
      Just want to make it clear for anyone reading through the comments 🙂

      @@Zorriel you personally didn't (which is great), but people could, because it is unfortunately a notion that does have followers and something that contributes to not only fatphobia but also scientific misinformation which is rampant in the field of nutrition and fitness! It's just a topic best left to professionals or people on the journey that were guided by professionals imo, because of so much misinformation.

      I was going to comment something similar, and I appreciate the clarification from Jenn. :) Though I had not considered implications about intelligence in fit vs. unfit people.
      But I want to reiterate, there are lots of great reasons to engage in mental exercises and stimulation (mainly to promote a healthy brain in the long-term, and generally people find it enriching and enjoyable!), but weight loss or even weight maintenance is not one that's supported by evidence.
      And it may be surprising that exercise is also not a great option for reducing one's calorie balance either-- but exercise has a lot of health benefits otherwise! It's incredibly important for brain health, it helps with mood stability and hormone regulation, long-term mobility, better sleep, etc... But studies tend to show that adding exercise by itself tends to make people hungrier, and thus eat more to compensate-- so the #1 factor in weight loss and maintenance is controlling the calories you eat.
      A caveat is that strength training in particular IS helpful for weight maintenance, as building muscle mass increases the amount of calories your body burns at rest. But again, it's a little more complicated than "if you're maintaining weight now, just burn more calories with exercise."
      This is all to say-- I think it may be preferable to cite reputable sources and do a little more research before making a presentation like this. I think the points Jenn made that losing weight can be "allowed" as part of one's aesthetic goals are totally valid! And the general advice that "something is better than nothing" is not only kind advice to give, it actually backed up by evidence! But there's also some misinformation in here that doesn't sit well next to other videos on the channel, where Jenn's expertise and care truly shines.

    Jenn, academics aren’t “snowflake activists” and pushing an “authoritarian, woke agenda,” as stated in a comment you liked. Do you really believe these extreme conspiracy-theory-and-bigotry-adjacent views? or did you only skim, liking it simply because it supported your decision to make this video, and missing the greater point the commenter was making? I hope it was the latter. Unsubscribing for now.

      I felt that the comment was more about sharing one's own weight loss story using resources such as YT that are not always created by medical / academical professionals. Also, given that the statement was NOT about generalizing ALL academics or activists pushing a specific agenda or narrative, what I took from that comment was about having a skeptical eye, which I personally feel is beneficial for everyone in developing the skill of using discernment. Sure, the choice of words could have been different but I'm not here to make a stance on political views, but rather trying to encourage diversity in opinions as well as the freedom to express them. Thank you for bringing the concern up and providing a chance to clarify.

    Jenn, I love your other videos, but it is completely irresponsible to make a video about weight loss without any academic or practical qualifiications. Please take this down.

      Anyone is free to share their experience. What would be irresponsible is if she claimed to be an expert or said that this was her expert opinion, which she was very careful not to do. In more than one place she warns that this is just her experience. If someone doesn't know the difference between the expert and non-expert opinion, and how to treat each, than that's on them, and they need to work on that.
      This channel is a community that is interested in fashion, but we should be free to talk about anything we want, as long as it's done in a responsible manner, and that was absolutely done in this video. This is no different than a bunch of friends chatting and exchanging their experience.

      Most medical professionals openly admit that they have little to no training in nutrition, fitness or even disordered eating, with many doctors being obese themselves. Then there's the gym trainers that tell you low fat diets and exercise are the answer, with no clue about the many other factors that impact weight loss. People are free to share their own experiences and observations without having a formal qualification in that area. I've always struggled with my weight until I started learning more about health and metabolism from various sources including youtube. I managed to lose approx 35lbs and improve my health using advice from experienced non professionals. Also it's not like academics can be trusted nowadays given the amount of snowflake activists in academia who's priority is to push an authoritarian woke agenda. No thanks. I don't even agree with everything in this video but she has a right to share her views and experience, especially as she's stated she's not a medical profession. Adults watching this channel really shouldn't need to be coddled to such an extent.

      WEIGHT LOSS is a "medical and academic" topic only? No sharing tips amongst ourselves? I think that's a misogynistic position. It's no wonder Americans have weight problems, especially considering how our food pyramid has been influenced by corporations for decades but we're conditioned to listen to the experts. I've always been skinny and that's without the official, credentialed experts holding my hand and spoon feeding me all along, believe it or not.

    I can’t fathom why you posted this video. You’re a style expert and style is independent of body size, no? Now you’ve reminded a lot of potential customers that you’ll be judging their bodies while you’re assessing their faces and proportions. And your advice is really strange which makes sense since you admit you have no idea what you’re talking about. The whole thing is bizarre.

      Please don't turn the narrative around to me being judgmental about anyone else because that's a very blatant and false accusation. I'm merely sharing my experience and opinions as someone who pays attention to this topic, and I'm sure a lot of the viewers are as well because my channel is about how to look and feel our best. That could include finding your colors, the right hairstyle, makeup styles etc. but not limited to those topics either. If you consider yourself a potential customer who has been deterred by this video I completely respect your opinion, but to assume that I'm being judgmental about others is a FAR reach.
