- Organic weed control techniques used at the UC Santa Cruz Farm, including both mechanical cultivation and hand hoeing. The techniques emphasize cultivation at proper soil moisture to minimize impacts on soil structure.
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this…. We are looking into implementation of tractor cultivation and this was a great help
Terrific introduction to cultivation in organic farming! Well Done! Thanks!
Thanks - glad you found it useful! You might want to check out our free organic farming training manual; it's designed for instructors but has lots of useful info on cultivation: casfs.ucsc.edu/about/publications/Teaching-Organic-Farming/part-1.html
Preach!! Good to see someone else mentioning the real work behind being organic. Great video.
For real . people dont understand how hard a farmer has it . he don't just show up to work . when hes tired sick hungover or kids are sick , he has to work the fields . there is no excuse . we that live in the states have been spoiled for many years . I suggest growing a garden as soon as possible . its not easy but its definitely worth it . thank you for this video . I'm considering tractor help this year . old school arm strong is the best way to learn . imho .
This is a remarkably well made video presentation.
Thanks Herrick! We have a number of other videos available on our CASFS CZcams site, czcams.com/users/casfsvideo
Thanks and prayers to all of you for this great information and wonderful video👍👏 & God bless USA❤㊗
Fantastic informational video. The in-depth explanation was very helpful. Thank you
I like your instruction video. I am a 42-y old engineer from Sweden borned on a small farm. I am now trying to do a open source Project on genetic real time video processing program on the cheep Rasperry pi 3 plattform with a cheep inbuild videocamera to adress weed's in the real field using Deep Learning algorithms and other image processing technics. I realize there is thremedous challange to get the image processing to work proper on the real field application hope I get some fruitfull things to work and share this summer.
That sounds cool as a software engineer myself. I still prefer the “old fashion” techniques though 😊
Wow guys! What a nice video!!! Congratulations to everyone involved!
Awesome video! Learned so much. Thank you.
This is a very informative video, thank you!
excellent piece , thank you
very well explained !! Thank You very much !
this is a really well done video! thanks for posting it!

very useful video. Thanks allot to all the team.
love you information about weed management new style great brother so kind of you respect and regards from Rana sher toani Salam
Good video. Are there additional videos about organic food production? What is the make of the three-bar chisel plow? Where can one obtain the curved bed-shaped knives on the plow? What kind of bed shaped do you use.
this was a really terrific video.
what are the other implements that can be used ?
eagerly awaiting more instructions.
Great, helpful video!
One of the best videos i have seen on weeding. A superb job. This was very informative. Thanks a lot. In case of any doubts, whom can we reach to? Would like to get connected with your team.
Buen video, muy explicativo e interesante.
Thank you! nice work!
Great information.
Very good stuff. Just dont like seeing bare soil (dying microbes and...).
Also, I think I may be watering too much. You have a good point
Good info, thank you
Excellent thankyou
It was a god video. the techniques were very simple. guess common sense is not so common.
hi there do you have any vids showing the bedformer in use?
OMG, you are great!
Awesomely explained. Many thanks
That is terrific and very very educative for big scale farmers, the question is how about small scale farmer,?and what tools required to achieve good land management?thanx and keep us informed
Just a question why is the soil so bare I would have though you would have mulched it to conserve soil moisture.
Darryl Hopper that is technically a form of mulching. Mulching doesnt have to be wood mulch, straw or leaves can be mulch too.
Well done.
Thanks!
Great video! Thanks :-)
Thanks Anne! Glad you found it useful.
Maybe an explantion about cover crops would be usuful for recovering abandoned soils. Thanks for sharing.
Sounds as is you should be explaining to us .
Anyone know what sort of cultivator this is? Did he just put it together himself?

Do you feel the tractor caused subsoil compaction?

I use a high wheel hoe for rows and just the hula hoe in row.
Good
No till is the way to go
Where we can get price
这美国乡村音乐还是蛮好听的。
You guys should look into growing a winter cover and rolling it down into a mat over the soil. this will prevent weeds. or mulch with woodchips. Gabe Brown and Ray Archuleta have a ton of information yall may find useful.
Totally agree. I challenge these guys to go beyond tillage and try to do organic farming in nature’s image and produce crops with no tillage or herbicide.
that not a weed that's a cabbage plant / seedling
We want to contact you. Please reply.
no drip irrigation?
Yes, drip tape is applied after the initial overhead irrigation.
You are an arrogant jerk aren’t you?
Eu fico contrariada porque gosto muito de mexer com a terra, adoro flores planta de modo geral,só que fica impossível pra mim e pra grande maioria de brasileiros pois nem todo mundo fala inglês eu acho uma falta de respeito com os menos favorecidos.
Sir Question
Wow all the “experts” in the comment section. Disgusting. Probably don’t even have a garden.
Hi
I'm always puzzled to see professional operations planting in squares, not in triangles.
Please explain more ? hehe
He pulls the hoe across the row for one type of hoe weeding. That could not be done if planted in a triangle grid. So to make hoe weeding faster, square planting is best.
Well you go off somewhere by yourself and be puzzled
Wheel hoe with side sweeps and narrow rows of plants not 30 inch beds will save a lot of time

Try the ECO-friendly way to control weed: amzn.to/2WMQhP7
It is pointless cultivating the wheel tracks. Leave the tractor in the barn.
Too much exposed soil! Please consider mulching...
Should be top comment; soil health seems unknown.
to much work.. go the back to eden method
Michael Gutierrez That doesn't work for a farm of any real scale.
this was a really terrific video.
