I love this woman, her passion, her talent , her wit, her humanity, and most of all, how well she understands people.
A goddess. Underrated amongst Hollywood. This woman has been crushing the zeitgeist for decades!
I am a fan of her work. She is a vastly underrated director.
Your damn right shes a trailblazer!!
serious film descriptions sound more fun in a heavy Bronx accent, fact! Heckerling reacts to "8 1/2" in much the same way Friedkin did, picking it as sort of a summation of what's great about filmmaking for them. Very Cool.
Clueless is THE great modern American high school satire IMO. The writing especially is deceptively delectable.
savedfaves I think it's a masterpiece. Second only to maybe Mean Girls which is a perfect comedy
Fact.
Peter Lorre's speech in M is fantastic. Glad she brought that up.
Glad she likes Peter Lorre. Thing is, he appeared in "M" at night and did a musical comedy during the day.
I VITELLONI (Federico Fellini, 1953)
NAKED LUNCH (David Cronenberg, 1991)
TOKYO STORY (Yasujiro Ozu, 1953)
M (Fritz Lang, 1931)
ACE IN THE HOLE (Billy Wilder, 1951)
CITY LIGHTS (Charles Chaplin, 1931)
8½ (Federico Fellini, 1963)
SHOAH (Claude Lanzmann, 1985)
On the top of her pile at the very end ;)
Thank you for the listing, I couldn't see the titles.
I saw shoah in the pile too just wondered why they cut her talking about it
Finally adding the picks in the show notes. Criterion, you're getting better.
I would like a lot to see a George Miller's Closet Picks.
Amy we 💙 you!! You are a trailblazer and a class act!!
Tokyo Story! A friend of mine recently turned me on to Ozu's work, and winter was a major binge period. Setsuko Hara is amazing.
Reg Hunt Chisu Rudy as well!
Ryu!
She's terrific. Top 3 of all "Closet Picks" invitees.
I friggin love Fast Time at Ridgemont High...she was the director?! Wow. I mean,i knew Cameron crowe wrote the script...but i never knew anything about the director.
You know how people talk about the 3 minutes they will never get back? This is the 3 minutes that makes up for those other videos :)
This videos make me happy, specially then I see my favorite movies
She made awesome picks.👌
Clueless ought to be in the Criterion Collection
her comments on Tokyo Story really resonated with me because I did my undergrad thesis in history on how cinema made in post-war Japan depicted post-war Japan. Tokyo Story and An Autumn Afternoon are both great movies about getting old and realizing that society has kind of left you behind
Write ur next thesis on why college is a waste of time
@@shadowaccount how did I waste my time exactly?
i love the way she described 8 1/2
She's An Amazing Director!!
Clueless or Fast Times should get a Criterion. Would be a very different/interesting choice.
Evan Rodriguez I will cancel my FilmStruck subscription if they ever do something shitty like those two films.
Clueless is a wonderful movie. Maybe its cultural ubiquity has made people turn against it. But it is one of the best updating/adaptations of a classic that I have seen. Charming through and through.
and I will question every release going forward if they ever release those shitty films.
Charles Knowlton, haha as if Clueless is a "shitty film"
not fartsy enough for criterion
My God! At last! Someone picked up my favorite movie.... "M" by Fritz Lang!!!
I was thinking Spicoli when I watched this! Please get Sean Penn to do his closet tour too!
Just watched Children of Paradise from the CR Collection. Amazing.
Tokyo Story and 8 1/2. I wish they would at least try and pick a guilty pleasure. Or at least something they don't already own.
how about they pick what they really like and connect with?
This one was my favorite.
Who else here only comes to criterioncollection to see the latest Dvd picks?
This might be the first time I own a majority of the movies showcased. Only 2 that were shown I don't have in my collection, that's pretty cool.
These were some awesome picks!
love Amy!
"May I please remind you that it does not say RSVP on the Criterion Closet!"
I think she is so awesome and so entertaining.
Over at city hall we have cribbage game and boiled chicken dinner every Tuesday night. Some idiot dummped his whole chicken dinner down the toilet. Then tried to flush it causing an overflow at city hall that went down the steps and out in to the street even. What a mess we had on our hands.
8 1/2 must be one of the most selected films in the whole closet picks series.
Criterion actually invites someone into the closet who actually has something intelligent to say!
Great episode !
Criterion boasting their state of the art, 8kbps lossy audio restoration!
Why hasn’t she directed more films. Clueless is a masterpiece
she also directed fast times at ridgemont high which is also a masterwork
She directed Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and she also wrote and directed Look Who's Talking which is her biggest commercial success.
I Could Never Be Your Woman and Vamps are recent films of hers. One looks at the way the film industry treats women over 40 in front of and behind the camera as well as having the fantastic Michelle Pfeiffer, Paul Rudd, and a young Ms. Ronan whose first name I can't yet spell. Vamps is a vampire story I watched a ton over the pandemic. Full of great actors and solid gags, it doesn't hit all of it's notes well, but it's generally sweet and funny.
Hey Criterioncollection was this shot on 16mm or is this the work of a digital camera? Im almost sure I wont get a response but Ive been a long time fan and Im dying to know.
love her!
Love her Bronx brogue.
Yes shes a trailblazer.
IMHO the best one yet.
When I watched Clueless, for the first time, I noticed the movie is full of positive messages about people who are ignorant, but fundamentally good.
The film doesn't make fun of ignorant people; It's saying the spirit of a person is more important than the capabilities of a person. Clueless spotlights the real effects ignorant people can have on the people around them, but from the glass half-full point of view: You don't have to be intelligent to do good, you just have to be a good person. A good person is always a net gain, no matter how small their contribution. Of course, there's drama in the movie, but the movie is about how good people deal with these problems, overcome them and continue to be good.
For Example: Cher finds reasons to do good things, but doesn't always go about it in the right way. When Cher and Tai have an argument, it alerts Cher to the fact her actions are causing the opposite of what she intended - and she immediately stops. Cher wasn't able to see the hints of her mistakes because she was fixated on her goal - but her goal was a noble one. After this rebuke, Cher reflects on what made her choose to do the things she did and how and why it caused the opposite of what she intended. Then Cher corrects her mistake and moves on. She doesn't make excuses. She doesn't blame anybody. She just corrects her mistake.
When Tai alerts Cher to the effects of her actions, Cher became wiser - in that moment. Cher was open to the information because she wants to get better at doing good. The audience never questions Cher's character or motivation. We know she's a good person, from start to finish. In this regard, Clueless is also a story about hubris. Tai's rebuke helps Cher to become more self-actualized, and, upon reflection, Cher can now see things about people she couldn't see before. Cher is the same person, with the same goals, but her approach becomes more nuanced. This is also what makes her realize she likes Josh. So, in this case, Tai is actually the one who helps Cher.
Clueless conveys a simple message but it's a very poignant one. We need more people like Cher.
Can't wait for the Othello blu ray
How long ago was this filmed? It's before they re-did the closet, you can tell.
John Boorman & “ZARDOZ”! 👌👏👌👏👏🙏
I don't know this woman but I really like her
She made Fast Times at Ridgemont High Clueless National Lampoon's Vacation she's a trailblazer
She's an amazing person.
LOVE AMY!
Great, one of the best ones, loved this.
#OMG my all time time director!
Why didn't she grab a print of Under the Volcano? (I ask this of all closet guests.)
J_ Bar Its going to be near impossible for someone to best Albert Finneys performance in that, though. Maybe Jeremy Irons Jr. (Michael Fassbender) could do it. Also agree on the Canadian documentary accompanying the film - top notch indeed.
How about Eric Roberts in The Coca Cola Kid?
What is going on in the background? It is so noisy at the Criterion office.
Lol
Look who's talking criterion release?
Isn't this the old closet?
amy hecklerling if you're watching this give me a call, you're amazing
Shes a fucking trailblazer!!
I love Amy!
From the Bronx
Fuck yeah, Amy Heckerling. I'll mull over whether FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH belongs in the closet, but it would certainly belong there more than CLUELESS.
Always Tokyo Story. People still don't seem to realize Ozu made at least ten movies just as great.
J_ Bar Great choices. Good Morning is a wonderful comedy. A bit of an oddball in his oeuvre.
i honestly think its his worst (that ive seen)
how about, they do realize and like Tokyo Story the most? a pretty plausible explanation.
Late spring! autumn afternoon! there was a father! I was born but...! all fantastic and so so beautiful.
D'Ascoyne Never was a fan of Ozu and his humanist approach to everything. The more nihilistic Japanese filmmakers like Oshima always intrigued me more.
Does Gilbert Gottfried still speak to her maid?
Great Director.
M is one of the best films ever. It's like a film that people tell you to watch and it's actually worth watching. I must say, I really don't get the hype behind 8 1/2. I usually love old Foreign Films, but that one just didn't really do it for me.
Cinema Cola it's a really hypnotic tour of dreams and memory. Really good film
Jacob Ryan Harris I guess I'll give it another shot to see if I'll like it more this time around.
Cinema Cola yeah me too. Even though i like it a lot I didn't quite love it
I think M is amazing and Peter Lorre, directed by Fritz Lang is terrific! Amy knows the score.
Side note-It may be a cliche, by now, but I adore Felini's 8 1/2. Transplendant. 😎
Wow. She's cool.
Fuck yeah alan vega in the closet
yet another for 8 1/2 - at least 60% of the folks talk about this one.
Please include a list of the movies , I can't see what the film's are the actress is holding up.
Who knows the story of her maid?
you mean with Gilbert Gottfried?
M
I much prefer it when people hold up the case for 8 1/2, voice their admiration but say very little to actually describe it. For anyone who's not seen it, what this woman says is about as helpful as saying "it's a soufleé...with actors in it." Take no notice.
You know, it would be nice if some these presenters actually told you the name of the movie and not just hold up the case and say “This one’s great!” without telling you the name. On a very small screen, i.e. cell phone, you can’t read the labels.
Pet peeve on an otherwise very interesting series.
why sound sucks?
peet-a LAW-rhee
Z
BORING...
She should change her name to Amy HACKerling - other than "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (which actually owes most of its success to Cameron Crowe) every movie she's made has sucked!
you obviously haven't seen "aloha"
That movie was directed by Cameron Crowe you dink... and that movie sucked too lol
I agree... Crowe was responsible for "Jerry Maguire" which sucked, and also "Say Anything" which was just average. "Fast Times" WAS a collective effort... all pistons were firing on that one!
She's made some bad movies, but she still made some classics.
I must say I have never been into Cameron Crowe. I watched Almost Famous like three times trying to understand what people loved so much about it. I got nothing.
what a dumb thread this was.
I think she is so awesome and so entertaining.
