Oil change shops caught cheating under the hood

- When you take your car to the shop for maintenance, you expect to get what you pay for. But a KXAN undercover investigation found that’s not always the case at some oil change shops in Central Texas.
- Zábava
For 100 dollars, you can buy a set of Rhino ramps, 5 qts of full synthetic, and a nice oil filter - and you'd have 20 bucks left over for lunch.
....and a six pack of beer.
Facts
Buy a decent import that doesn't need an oil change more than once each year and don't go to some POS garage, amerikkka has Costco, I think they do oil changes, and they are a great company.
This is why I always do my own maintenance. My car requires full synthetic. It costs me around $35 for a filter & 6.5 qts. & I can dispose of the old oil at a local shop for free.
@@georgiaactivist8728 Good for you, but a lot of people (including me) can't or won't get under their car to change their oil. I bought a Honda SUV that lets me know when the oil needs to be changed and that's about twice per year because I drive a lot. But many cars now need only one change each year.
Buy your own oil buy me a 6 pack of beer and I’ll change it for you
Josh Miller shit if you were close to me I’d take you up on that offer😂
I assume you do the work BEFORE you get drunk?
I'd buy you a keg.
Josh Miller right!! 😂
I buy you 24. Case plus 2 bottles you change it
$90 for an oil change 😂😂😂 talk about a finesse
Thats the cost of 2 oil changes including filters if you did it yourself and had to buy tools both times
I do my own oilchanges. Its about 90 dollars for 4 liters of oil and the filter+new crusher washer - and that is if the oil is on sale. I do not live in the US. I use OEM filter (think it is bosch for this car) and Castrol Edge full syntetic 5W-30.
Idk where y’all are or what car you guys drive but I get full synthetic for $40 at the shop I go to
@@gtamonkey3061 Name brand synthetics (castrol, penzoil, mobil 1, etc) cost 50 canadian dollars here retail price for a gallon. My last oil change moto master synthetic was on sale for 20 dollars down from 50 so i bought 5 gallons to last me the next 3 or so years tho
I told my dad not to do it but my dad got charged £100 at the dealership by just changing the oil and no filter, I told him they scammed you and I wasn’t that happy
It seems like everywhere you go, theres always someone willing to rip you off.
I nearly fell out of my chair when I heard him say $95 for an oil change.
Yes but with 10-12 qtz I'd be doing it a lot less often..
10000 or 12000 mile oil changes..
i got forest whittaker eye when i heard 95
@Forest Whitaker You misspelled your own name.
Black Buick it's a GM. Engine's always in distress.
I’ve changed my oil since I was 17
I’m 52 now
@USA STRONG I do, I was 16 and still work on my cars at 60. Don't be rude not very professional.
@USA STRONG you care enough to reply, fuckface
I’m not good at math so you’re like 34 now?
USA STRONG - have you been a douche all your life or is this just something you’re trying out… If you didn’t care then you wouldn’t of responded you would’ve just moved the fuck on asshole
And you changed it once..
Imagine how many women, old people, college students etc that have paid for a oil and filter change and the vehicle was never touched.
Probably happens a lot more than we think. I just changed my oil from a BMW dealer after 9 months and it looks dark as black coffee and thick like creamed soup. Pretty confident they didn’t change my oil…
That even happens at places like Jiffy lube
this happens to me at Brake Master. They charged me $70 for a transmission oil change but never touch anything. I confronted the damn manager and he had his technician replaced my transmission oil.
@@SlyEvoIX yo dude ik im late as tf, but if your oil is creamy then uu prolly have a head gasket leak that’s causing coolant to mix with your oil
@@19ShilohK he said dark as coffee and thick “like creamed soup”. Not creamy color.

It's why I've been changing my own oil for the last 45 years...
When my vehicles leave my garage I'm confident it's done right!
@Coolride17 Lucky you have a garage

@@bryanmartinez6600 Thats because your not a pussy like most men these days.

Me too. I do it myself as well.
Im 23, that's exactly why i do it now. Same price as paying to have it done but i know my vehicle better
it’s places/shops like this that give us gear heads a bad rep.
Irks my nerves that it’s the oil changing places also
Ive never changed the oil in my car. Ive always taken it to the small oil change places. I stopped getting synthetic a long time ago bc of this fear.
@@ManoloSeFue if your car requires synthetic you should use it. It matters engine by engine. Read the owners manual because the wrong oil can really be bad for your car
I disagree. If you're doing it right, you have nothing to worry about.
@LactoseTheIntolerant doesn't really matter of you switch back and forth
“Tune up your vehicle with an oil change” 🤦🏻♂️
Technically it is a tune - up since your car would perform better and overall be happier with better oil
@Billybigrigger-ic7jp Not necessarily. Old oil can create more drag on the engine than new oil, and some modern engines call for the thinnest weight of oil available, such as 0W-08 in the Toyota Crown, which was only recently approved for use by the American regulator. Of course, the gain would be negligible, but it could be measured.
@Billybigrigger-ic7jp The layman term for it is in fact a "tune up" , not your definition coming from the videogame "NeedForSpeed:Carbon" or whatever.. lmao
I worked in an oil change shop. I’ve seen some shadey stuff and I’ll never work in a place like that again.
i guess that's why you change your own oil
Not everyone is mechanically minded and they shouldn't be ripped off because of the lack of knowledge
there are a bunch of reasons why people take it to mechanics even if they know how to change it. most people do not have a garage and chaning your oil on the side of the road is little awkward. weather could be a reason also, you don't wanna change your oile when its -10.
I'm a fitter by trade and I still get my car serviced because A: I'm getting too old for that shit and B: they stamp the book and it helps with resale of the vehicle
AutOdometer absolutely, as a former mechanic I can say it’s rarely the employees that cheat folks... most of the time it’s the management or owners squeezing whatever profit they can out of customers. I ended up walking out after seeing the owner of my company charge a little old lady for a full AC rebuild when all that was wrong was a $30 relay. I ended up waiting till the customer returned to pick up her truck, told her what she really owed the boss, then left for good.
Some cars are not as simple as you think. For some, a filter cup is required and you really need to get under the car. If you don't have a lift i don't know how thehell an average joe will get that off lol im telling you this because i work at a shop
I learned how to change my car's oil after something like this ended up in my local news. Saves me a ton.
👍
I’ve changed the oil in all my equipment & I know that what I put on them is the good stuff.
I put the Lucas oil additive in my 7.3 &
She runs better than ever! 4000 almost 5000 miles later it’s time for another oil change.
More oil to filter to make black
Diesel for my injectors.
They like 5-10%
Or a quart of oil every fill up. I take very good care of my stuff, if something breaks on my watch I know it’s not because I didn’t maintain it right.
I’ll buy my own oil and take it to a local mechanic to change
What will save you a ton is if you didn’t change your oil every five minutes.
s h ok boomer lol
I’ve caught garages and even dealers charging me for work they never did. When I have caught them on it their excuse always is “oh sorry the tech forgot”. Forgot, sure. Do not trust any shop to do what they say they’re doing. Ask to save the old parts for you.
“ I wannna get uh, the best ya got”

Feeling cute. Might use conventional instead of full synthetic. Idk
Huh??

fuck man 100$ for any kind of oil change is a rip off to begin with
tune ups are not 100$..
Major Disdain , you're damn right about that.
if you're paying less than 100 for a tuneup they're either putting I. cheap knockoff parts or not even doing the job. u can't even get plugs and wires for under a hundred from the parts store
Not a diesels oil change
This is a straight oil change for $95.
I mean, paying someone else to change your oil is a scam in it of itself....
"Oh it's oil alright"..
"It's Mazola"..
"Is that why my exhaust smells like fried tortillas but my engine seized?" 🤔
Mazola is specified for all Mazda’s. And Canola is specified for all vehicles manufactured in Canada. Fortunately, my car was made in Mexico so it only needs inexpensive lard.
Finding an honest mechanic is like finding ocean front property in Arizona

One service job I can’t do on a car: wheel alignment. Everything else is relatively easy. Oil change in a car: Easy so long as the filter isn’t buried by too many covers or leads.
Same. I hate alignments. I'll do it, but i dread doing them. Hopefully ill do enough to just get used to it.
@@shitboxenthusiast1557 I have done my own wheel alightment. But was not happy with the result. The one thing I’d rather have done. I do timing belts, brakes, everything, just not alignment. I am glad I have a manual transmission. If I had an automatic, I’d get someone to service it as well. Very fiddle and costly if you stuff up.
i have a wrangler on 40" nittos on 17" wheels that has never been to an alignment rack, even after 7" of lift, new dana 60 axles and a full set of fully adjustable control arms that i have installed myself in a garage without a lift. hell, i even installed the tires on the wheels myself! no excuses! shops are a ripoff for, and are usually serviced by the lowest payed employees! no. fucking. thanks!

Simple solution to avoiding rip-offs: change your own oil.
At 75 i can barely open a ketchup bottle. Used to though, enjoyed it
Perfect reason, either do it yourself or buy some beer for your buddy and have them do it for you.
Burritos work for me !
Some probably don't even change the oil or don't change the oil filter.
Walmart
You can easily check to see if they changed the oil by checking the color before and after the oil change on the dipstick. Before the oil change, the oil will be black. After the oil change the oil should be light brown, almost like honey.
Gerald K Yes but it’s not easy to check the oil filter.
Alex you ask them to give you the old filter
We'd skip the filter most of the time. Just spray it clean and put a date on it.
People who cheat customers like this should be barred from ever owning a business in any form or fashion in this country.
Forreal , it seems like they all just go under a different name and keep on trucking
Agree... but to stop it you have to put them in jail for life. That'll end the malpractice.
There MUST be consequences. Authorities should make arrests and punish offenders.

An oil change is literally the easiest thing. I’m 14 and I do it for my family all the time.
Not always, some cars, especially micros are hard. Most cars are easy though
Easy has nothing to do with it. I'm not changing my own oil... but you can come change mine for me and I'll pay you the same as the shop, we have 4 vehicles. Deal? I'm sure I'm not the only one. Great business for you to start.
@@lilolme69 yeah sure

It dont matter of how old you are.14 or 74. as long as you do it right.
I don’t like how they go after the workers. It’s definitely someone higher up who is making them do that. They are just sticking up for themselves to keep their job.
Doesn't make it right though does it.
Richard Jones I never said it was right.
Media goes after who is in front of them. Unfortunately, owners and master minds behind it are not even at shop, hiding also throws the employees under the bus, act like they are in shock!
You're an idiot they are just fucking lazy
That’s not an excuse. Yes, the owners are more at fault for telling their employees to do that but for the employees to knowingly rip off customers is shady, irresponsible, childish, immoral, and illegal. They know better, and if that were me or anyone I love working there, I guarantee I’d be out the door and reporting them EVERYWHERE. Please don’t make excuses for them.
I’ve busted dealerships doing this and not even changing the oil filters.
Phillip Webb how did you catch them
Blackhawks when I went to take my vehicle in I would make a mark on the oil filter and after it’s serviced I check the filter when I get home
Phillip Webb that sucks. Did you call them, if so what did they’d say? I should start doing that too
Blackhawks No I just started doing it myself because I don’t trust anyone to do it now and your local Walmart is even worse because of you pay for upgraded oil they use the cheap oil .I know for a fact because a buddy worked there.
Jeremo Brown that sucks
Treat your employees right because when they become your ex employees they can expose your business and bring it down to the ground
This stuff does go on. My brother worked for a place and quit after he talked to the truck driver that brings the oil. The guy said the owner of the shop had him fill all the tanks with the same cheap oil. My brother confronted his boss about this dishonesty and he refused to change. So my brother said he was not working for a dishonest crook and quit. This is precisely why I change my own oil and have for years.

He just said synthetic oil cost 3-4 times as much as normal oil. It's like $3 more for a 5QT bottle.
Its Voodoo he meant the service. Most places charge around $20 for a conventional change and around $90 for full synthetic
I noticed that too, and i do my own oil, and my car calls for synthetic so... either regular oil went way down in price or he means for the service.
But I've had a couple times where i needed an oil change, and had no way of doing it myself. Unless i crawled through mud. So once i took my own oil and filter and went to a place where this guy charged me $20 to do it. It was after hours and he pocketed the money worked out for both of us i guess.
More recently i went to a place, but they refused to use my oil & filter. They also asked $70. So screw that. Couple days later i got ahold of a friend with a garage, he did it for $10.
It's ridiculous what they charge at garages though, and mostly it's because everyone wants to make their share off you. There's the garage owner then the mechanics who work for them. That's why they charge like $100 an hour. $100 an hour... then whatever they ask for the parts which might not be top quality either.
Oil changes places buy oil in bulk. You get whatever they have, not what your engine requires. STOP GOING TO THESE PLACES!

It's people like this that make mechanics seem untrustworthy, I'm in Australia but Ive worked at shops that are like this, is a disgrace
Years ago my cousin worked as a mechanic for a local service station. The owner of the station would fill name brand bottles of fully-synthetic, semi-synthetic, and conventional motor oil with cheap bulk 10W-30 recycled motor oil out of the same barrel. Customers would specify the name brand motor oil they wanted used from a sign listing all of the different name brand motor oils "available" and their cost. The owner would walk over to a shelf and get whatever brand of motor oil the customer wanted along with a cheap no name oil filter. But, unbeknownst to the customer, they were all getting the same cheap recycled 10W-30 motor oil.
this is why I change my own oil
I would feel so bad doing that to a customer, I’d quit too

I used to deliver for Valvoline in Houston. I would see the same practices at alot of shops! It sucks but it does happen alot!
This happens all the time even at dealerships. 😢
Stealerships
Who else cringed when you grabbed oil from the dipstick with his hands!!
Hey,,,, give him some slack,,,,,, it was a "slip" of the hand trick.
Little girl 😂
That's why he wears a tie - not recommended when inspecting things like car engines - cooling fans can cut in - then he'd get a close up of why not to.
“Tune up car with a fresh oil change!?”
Tell me, how does changing the oil tune up the car?
Is two different systems but oil has a lot to do with an engine's performance so sorry to bust your bubble but well lubricated crank and cam ahafts and pistons can be called a tune up but i say a lube up sounds way better lol
Zacarias Blanco
You haven’t “burst my bubble” at all! An engines performance doesn’t fluctuate based on how old its oil is, load of shit.
Art of the grow
That’s a Placebo effect dude, the only way you could ever tell is in very few cases it might run slightly smoother but you’d be pushed to notice.
If oil changes anything in your engine, the damage has already been done and needs scrapping!
Darren Rice
Righty then...first of all you might wanna learn how to spell before trying to shoot someone down.
Second of all you’re talking nonsense, the plain fact is a tune up is not an oil change! A “tune up” is an old term for tuning the fuel/air mixture on a carburettor and resetting the ignition timing nothing to do with fluids.
Finally your outdated sexist assumption that I don’t work on cars is further evidence of you talking bullshit, I’ve been restoring classic cars and building engines for almost 20 years bud, I know more than you ever will! So go and make me a sandwich whilst I do some real work! Prick!
Darren Rice
Look buddy, its a nonsensical phrase in the context it was used, even you calling plugs fluids & filters a tune up, its not! That’s a “service” initially it wasn’t supposed to be argumentative but it is a bug-bare of mine.
I love that shocked head jump back he does like it’s a surprise
Dealer might do the same thing too. Don’t change the filter or use the wrong weight oil too. Might over tighten the oil drain pan too. Been changing my oil ever since.
Word on the street Jimmy is still pinching a loaf. Lol
😂😂
4:18 lol when he tries to act like he had no clue. just too funny.
If youre paying someone $90 for an oil change youre already getting ripped off, regardless of what oil theyre using.
Takes 10 minutes to change your own.
The cost for oil and filter for a German car will be about $49-$85. Which is why they charge $90-$130. It should last you 7000-10,000 miles though.
I think Mobil One should have their own undercover checkers team to make sure if you ask and pay for Mobil One you get it, because they are losing money too.
Why the heck wouldn't you do your own oil change?!?!
Matthew Taylor Some people don't have the time or just don't want to get their hands dirty.
I know...
It's just a damn shame people get taken advantage of like this.
+Matthew Taylor where i live we cant work on our vehicles in the parking lot but there is a garage i can rent out but id spend about the same at a shop
Anyone who has a vehicle and some basic tools has no excuse.
+Diesel Man i have never in my life brought my vehicles to a shop for oil change and never will. diy is the only way to go.
5:01 The old hiding in the bathroom trick. The classics never go out of style.
Ol Jimmy’s in there shittin’ bricks.
He has to take a dump!
SCAMMERS always STUMBLE FOR ANSWERS. EVERY TIME.
As a mechanic at a big car brand I can't see why you would only change your oil and not do anything else that is required at the service intervall. During maintence we always check brakewear, fluids, play in antiroll bars etc. And at sertain intervalls the car needs new timming belt, sparkplugs, airfilter, fuelfilter, unit belt, brake fluid etc. Just changing the oil is not a service and they wont be able to promise you that the car is problem free. Do your maintenence at an approved brand specific dealership and you wont have as much trouble with your car. And if you decide to do the service by yourself make sure to check the car properly and check the maintenence intervall to see what you need to replace at this service.
