There may have been an energy crisis going on, but there was no sign of it on stage as these guests had their own energy. What a legendary lineup.
Good line up, but I'm still looking forward to seeing the broadcasting of the episodes with B.B. KING and MARVIN GAYE hosting the Midnight Special.🤨😑
The band playing for Edwin Starr is Rose Royce
Killed it...🎶🎸🎺
Impossible. They're working at the car wash.
thank you!!
Unreal
Ann Peebles never reached the level of fame she deserved.
Her “I Can’t Stand the Rain” is so good here, she’s phenomenal!
Agreed!
thank you! Discovered her through Tom Petty radio. He was a huge fan of Ann Peebles.
Smokey at the height of his abilities here. Just beautiful!
Lofgren should have been a superstar. He‘s a phenomenal singer, writer, guitarist and human being.
Keep On Truckin--the drummer banging it.
The camera goes in for a closeup on Butterfield's hands at the end, but Ronnie Barron's the one playing the extra-funky Rhodes stuff! I saw these guys at Lincoln Center. What a show! (Doug Sahm opened!)
It may have been more than 50 years ago, but Edwin Starr's song "War" is just as powerful as it was when it was first released. Sadly, wars still plague humanity all over the world.
Jackie Chan is such an all round performer, he really gets the soul brother respect for....WAR... in Rush Hour , cool the pertinent number was chosen ♡
Cool! Eddie's gonna do Keep on Truckin' and Boogie Down!😎 Smokey and Edwin Starr will be good, too! The rest I don't know by name, so new to me, I guess. Looking forward to it!🎉💜
This is most likely the only existing video of Grin. Certainly the best quality. (:
Damn, Nils was a beast!
Every week my wife and I watch the new episodes. It seems like every week there is some hidden gem. Something amazing. This week for us it was Ann Peebles. Legendary song and fantastic live performance. Thank you Midnight Special!
That performance of WAR is so heavy. The ending is truly something to think about.
Every week you see a new gem. Best youtube channel ever the Midnight Special 😍😍😍😍😍😍
I have been hoping for over 10 years that they would bring back these shows and sure enough they did and are remastered to a brand new look and full sound ...It fits the ytube format just right..
Edwin Starr! I had those drums in the late 80s and early 90s. Ludwig Vistalite in Amber -13,14,16,18, 24 w/5x14 amber snare. Awesome drums! Cool to see "my" drums on here.
I watch it every weekend,it always like every week there are lost gems Something great This weekend is Edwin Starr Thank you Midnight Special.
I just watched the entire episode and have to say it was surprisingly good considering I wasn't that familiar with all the acts, they were better then expected. Most of all the chat was funny and energetic, sometimes I'm a little old/stoned/slow and miss some of the comments live, but watching it back y'all were pretty funny tonight. This channel has a great core of people with great hysterical comments, I hope to see everybody keep the vibe alive again next Friday.
Feel the same.
It was Very Fun Tonight! 😂
@@janicetrimmell6897 We have a fine mix of ladies and gents in a nice age range and when everyone participates it's fun.

Grrrrrrrr
It was nice to be there and not be mysteriously booted.
Paul Butterfields version of Howlin Wolf ‘Meet me at the Bottom ‘ was cranked up but good. Of course Wolfman Jack got his voice idea from Howlin Wolf (Chester Burnette)
Such a great mix, another wonderful trip in the Way Back Machine. Thanks Midnight Special and all the Midnight Maniacs for sharing it with me. So many wonderful memories and so much knowledge from the Rock and Roll professors.
That was fun last night and you had some pretty funny comments, see ya Friday bro!
Another trip back in time with the greatest all-around variety live music program.
Looking forward to it.
Never knew Lofgren could play piano like that. Just knew him as a great guitar slinger.
🎶💗💗
“Keep on truckin', baby
I got to keep on truckin'
Got to get to your good lovin'
Ooh, ohh” 🎶
Love those lyrics & song ,,,💘,,,from the late Great tenor singer/songwriter Eddie Kendricks co-founder of Motown singing group, the Temptations. That’s royalty right there and what a great dancer he is!!
"Man, Smokey's got a high voice."
Eddie Kendricks - "Hold my beer"
This is GREAT! Didn't know Eddie Kendricks did "Keep on Truckin'" twice. I’m guessing “Boogie Down” made its TV debut on this show. It was brand new at that time. Thanks for posting. Another big shout to Mr. Edwin Starr. Nice seeing him doing “Hell in Harlem” and his classic “War” and also Johnny Taylor. It IS “Cheaper to Her”. Ha.
Uhuh demais esse programa e que época maravilhosa da música não tinha disco nem o punk era blues soul rock n roll. O.melhor canal do CZcams.
One of the best episodes EVAH 🎉🎉🎉
Wow. First time I’ve seen a live performance of “Ain’t It Hell Up In Harlem,” which is the theme song to Fred Williamson’s movie called “Hell Up In Harlem” - sequel to “Black Caesar.” Both were released in 1973.
Smokey does the remake of the late Al Wilson # 1 song "Show And Tell".
Good music in Good times ❤
Willie Mitchell playing the Mica-Sonic electronic bongos, made circa 1970, on Ann Peebles’ - “Can’t Stand The Rain” 15:03
Next year episode 51 of midnight special will be 51 years old
Smokey with the caress👂🏾💕👂🏾💕
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is the result of war." Powerful.
The next episode for January 25, 1974 is another good show. It was hosted by The Steve Miller Band, and also features appearances from Brownsville Station, Tim Buckley, James Cotton Band, Genesis, and The James Gang.
re: Smokey's closing comment on the energy crisis, I can't post the link to the graph, but gas prices doubled in late '73 after the Yom Kippur war and ensuing OPEC boycott.
In real terms, a gallon of gas cost 0.09 hours of work in early 1973 (the cheapest it ever got, 35c/gallon vs $4/hr of wages) vs 0.12 hours of work in January 1974.
Real prices doubled to 0.18 hours of work 2006 - 2014, and are again now sitting at 0.12, halfway been the 1973 low and 2008 spike.
I used to pump cash at a full-service station in Tulsa in 1973, it was 18.9 cents a gallon. Back in 1976 I could put $1 in and make it to and from school. My buddies would leave their pop bottles in the car and we would use those to buy extra gas.
The music survives and we can choose to immerse ourselves in the great vibes from these performances.
@@robmatlock7675I think the price was about twice that back when I was living in LA. California has a higher price than the average national gas price. Maybe OK and Texas had the lowest gas prices back then.
55:55 Yes, I did enjoy this arrangement. Immensely.
Crazy to think that Smokey Robinson is still doing his thing over 50 years after this…
I can't believe it's been fifty years.
God yes, sometimes I wish I could relive it at least music wise.
Despite what the onscreen graphic said, it's JOHNNIE Taylor.
Edward Starr "WAR" Can't Wait to hear how that sounds live. I remember when I bought the 45. At that time a 45 rpm was 15 cents. Vietnam War was in full swing. The song sure fit in place, with the 70s. "War, what is it good for." "Only for the undertaker" A lot of people in my hometown didn't come back. If they did, they weren't the same. Smokey doing a lot of Maricals songs. Can't wait to hear those songs.
The Beatles-Live: Washington Coliseum, Washington D.C., Tuesday, February 11th, 1964(1080p. Full High Definition, H. 264-30 Frames Per Second).mkv
😢there you have "wsr"
War i meant.
Awful live version 😢
15 cents ? Must have been a bargain bin. My first 45 was the Beatles Help when new and that was 50 cents. By 1970 they were 66 cents.
@DannyHaralson-ol1io Watch it till the END. It starts of.. Fast, Then there is the Regular speed version. But... @ The End... It gets HEAVY !! Playing, All of them on the ground !! Then. It ENDS. With All the band, Representing what WAR does. Kill. Check it out. An Amazing performance !!!
Hearing Edwin Starr do War live was worth the wait
Yes.... even though the Vietnam War was effectively over by that time, after the USA had already gotten the hell out of there.
Yeah that performance was deep caught me off guard towards the end because I was looking at the band members and thinking why are they moving slow like that not realizing what was really going on WOW
@@executivedecision6141 The war had peaked and was winding down but we didn't evacuate everyone until 1975.
I did some digging on Edwin Starr, very interesting;
“Over the years, however, Starr said the real meaning of the song had been lost. “The song was never about the Vietnam War,” he told the weekly British newspaper the Voice in 2001. “It was about the neighborhood wars and the racial wars that were going on inside America at the time. Apr 3, 2003”
@@KittyGrizGriz Interesting Kitty, I'm pretty surprised to find this out a half a century later, but if it came from the horse's mouth I guess it's his word, wow.
Eddie Kendricks is the bomb.
He IS! A sex-bomb!?
I think I just fell in love with Nils Lofgren; the way he moves his body so elegantly-sings-plays guitar & keys, not to mention his making love to his instrument… oooh yeah! 🎉❤❤
Me too! 🤩😍🥰
@@pariaheep Isn’t he fantastic?! 😍 It almost looks like Nils is ice skating across the stage or it’s been heavily greased beforehand!🤯
I'm 63 years old and have followed pop/rock music very closely all of my life but I'm embarrassed to admit that I hadn't heard of Grin until right now. Same goes for Paul Butterfield's Better Days. This is the first time I've ever heard of them.
Grin's front man was Nils Lofgren, who later joined the E Street Band after Steve Van Zandt left.
Paul Butterfield was a virtuoso harmonica player and his band before this one was MUCH better. Check out the album East West.
@@charlesdrake3125 Nils also plays with Neil Young and Crazy Horse.
Check out the first 2 Paul Butterfield Blues Band LP's both 5 star records and listen to Born In Chicago for his best work. At this point he was developing a serious drug problem which would escalate and he was far from his best in this performance unfortunately.
@@charlesdrake3125 Thank you - as @Jesus-Saves said, I had never heard of Grin until I saw this video today. But, I know Lofgren from the E-Street Band, and faintly, if at all, recall him from Neil Young's Crazy Horse (according to @neilyoungfan)
...Nils seem to emulate Hendrix almost to an embarrassing degree (rip off)
Edwin Starr not only performs a killer version of his hit record 'War" but his unbelievable moving political theatrics to end the song speaks volumes for the times and I'm amazed it passed the censors for national TV.
After learning that Grin, who I have only heard of but never listened to, got the name from leader Nils Lofgren. Makes sense now.
Hey, Brotz
Quick question:
Are you related to Peter Brötzmann?
I Googled your name for curiosity about your sax name and came up with him.
@@Royale_with_Cheeese No relation, just decades long friendship who I had the privilege of meeting and jamming with a couple of times. We lost him a year ago and his then his manager Jost Gebers who I knew in the industry forever, I could tell a million stories. The last time we sat, chat and played was at a place called the White House in Orlando, Florida in 2013 with William Parker and Hamid Drake.
@@brotzmannsax
So out of respect to your friendship with Peter, you use his name.
That's nice.
@@Royale_with_Cheeze I'm glad you saw the reply, my 2 main musical influences PB & FZ combined, ironically I met both of them but they never met each other.
EDDIE KENDRICKS , ANN PEEBLES , JOHNNIE TAYLOR, EDWIN STARR YES!!!!!!
This is when the 70s started rolling.
Wow...Ann Peeples! What an amazing voice!
Show and Tell the Al Wilson classis sounds great by Smokey and that arrangement banging.
I've never heard someone use the term "dynamite cat" unironically.
🧨🐈⬛…Meow…I’m stealing “this”,
Thanks for pointing it out…
It's 2024 now and Edwin Starrs' "WAR" has never been more actual!🕊☮
Especially loved the Smokey Robinson medley of hits. Was that Marv Tarplin on guitar? He was stellar.
Grins song “Believe” is cool in how it transitions into “You’re the Wait I’ve Been Waiting For”. I really like them my 1st time seeing/hearing, lucky me.
What’s the lead singers name?
I like his Jimi t-shirt - his voice reminds me a lil’ bit like Ted Turners of Wishbone Ash band.
That's Nils Lofgren, Springsteen's guitar player.
@@DavidNelsonO Thank you! He’s a fantastic musician I love his energy!
Wish I’d seen Springsteen perform live, just once.
smokey robinson & eddie kendricks that's singing.
These shows must have finished before 12 pm because many of the host and a guest sometimes will say to Good Morning to the audience ..
Daaaam !!! Who id this Guitar Player for Grin ?? { The last performance. Freaking Unreal !! )
Nils Lofgren. (Currently playing with the E Street band, I think. I know he has, also had a good solo career.)
@someguy5708 Thank you. Ironically, I'm aware of him. But @ This point in his life, the dude was ATOMIC ! I had NO idea... there was This side of him...
@@soundpainter2590 agree - I saw Grin was on the show, and I thought, "I've heard of them, where do I know them from? " But then I recognized him almost immediately. Late 70s when I started buying Nils' music I read some of his history, and that's how I knew Grin.
@@someguy5708 Nils is currently with Neil Young and Crazy Horse. He's recorded a lot with Neil over the years, going back to "After The Gold Rush".

Had no idea as to the origin & wanted to share, anyone else remember the “Hippie Slogan” on vehicle bumper stickers back then?
“While R. Crumb didn't make up “keep on truckin'” he certainly popularized it. The line comes from “Truckin' My Blues Away” a song by Blind Boy Fuller from 1936. Crumb is an avid blues fan, so he more than likely heard the phrase in Fuller's song and adapted it to his comic strip.”
The "Keep on Truckin" blacklight poster was on my wall, as well as the Viking with the axe, the haunted ghost ship, the cosmic eye, the Silver Surfer, a haunted house, "Let's Boogie", KISS, a 6ft Spiderman, a marijane leaf, and a unicorn, all walls and ceiling was covered bought my blacklight and a set of JVC Speakers with my first Quik Trip paycheck. I also had a bong that I convinced my mom was a broken lava lamp. Those were the days!! 😎😎😎
@@robmatlock7675Wow, that’s a trip right there in itself, your mom haha.
I remember my blacklight posters, lamp, floor to ceiling love beads, homemade hanging macrame w/brown beer bottles, hanging mobiles, huge flower-power flowers made out of tissue paper & flower, yellow smiley face stickers. Once while riding in the station wagon w/dad driving & 15yr old brother, I was 12 & innocently asked “What does honk if you’re horny mean?” after reading a bumper sticker. My no filter-mouth brother proudly told us & I could feel my dad wanting to slink down to the floorboard as his grip tightened on the steering wheel 🤭 😂 🤣
@@KittyGrizGriz sounds like a busy bedroom, sometimes I want to do my bedroom 70s style, paint the ceiling black with glow in the dark stars, but I can't talk the wife into it, lol. The bumper sticker story reminds me of that scene from Coal Miner's Daughter, where Loreta's husband wouldn't tell her what horny meant, 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Niels Lofgrin can walk, chew gum, and play guitar all at the same time.
You forgot the back flip, in all my decades in the industry I never saw anyone do that, pre punk..

LBJ had to send 500,000 troops/yr to Vietnam in the late 60s. Rich people could go to college or get doctor's notes to get a draft deferment, or people with connections could join National Guard units, so the butcher's bill of infantry casualties largely fell to working-class draftees.
There were 2 million men turning 18 each year in the 60s so chances were relatively high you were going to Vietnam if you couldn't get a deferment. Maybe 1 in 10.
By mid-1969, after ~200,000 casualties, the American people had largely had enough of all that and wanted out; and Nixon obliged by pulling US troops out just about as fast as LBJ had sent them in (the 1970 campus protests about the incursions into Cambodia were prompted by people thinking Nixon was re-escalating the war but this was more a last-gasp operation to provide Saigon a bit more breathing room as the US ceded the remote areas of S Vietnam back to the Communists).
Anyhoo, Edwin Starr can be proud that per Wikipedia: "War" was one of 161 songs on the no-play list issued by Clear Channel following the events of September 11, 2001

It was painful listening. 😢
I jumped directly to Show and Tell when I saw Smokey was performing it... a great singer performing a great song, right? Wow, was I wrong.
The arrangement is too fast (which was all too common on The Midnight Special) and the lyrics are really meant for someone with a deep voice.
