    It's unfortunate/weird how Alien Conquest failed, I recall it being a decent theme, and yet I don't have a single set from the line. It would seem now in retrospect that perhaps it got outcompeted by other themes. I mean Castle was still a thing at the time, Ninjago was just starting up, along with Atlantis being fairly popular, and of course Star Wars was stronger than ever.

    • @danjohnson4082
      @danjohnson4082 Pƙed 2 lety +15

      LEGO Star Wars was having one of its hottest years in 2011, so I guess there just wasn't enough business to go around. And an alien invasion theme seemed corny and outdated, even though the Alien Conquest sets looked very cool themselves.

    • @Singularian
      @Singularian Pƙed rokem +4

      As a kid I loved alien conquest and even entered a competition held by a tv network to try to win the entire set. I really hope they do a similar theme in the future with cooler ships and more advanced builds. It doesn't have to be an alien invasion theme because I suppose it's part of why alien conquest failed but something with at least a similar style would make me extremely happy and would also make my bank account cry.
      Right now I'm trying to complete the set because I really wanted to do that as a kid. When the set first came out I managed to get the mothership, alien abduction, and earth hq before it got cancelled. Didn't help that my little brother would be careless when we played with the alien conquest stuff and would break stuff and lose bricks. He even ate one of the bricks lmao. So considering we never had much money, my mum considered it too expensive to keep buying us lego.
      Now that I'm an adult and my brother is old enough not to eat my lego sets I can enjoy lego again :D. My mother is getting me Saturn V for christmas and after the christmas period I'm going to work on completing alien conquest again.

      @@Singularian Personally I quite like the retro style aliens with the bubble glass domes and flying saucer type of thing, it's just has this whimsical charm to it that's really fun, so I also hope they bring something like that back.

    The 1997 UFO sets were easy to combine with your City sets to create a spectacular 'alien invasion' scenario. This was during the reign of The X-Files, Independence Day, and Men In Black. I remember turning my police station into the FBI headquarters, the whole 'Res-Q' line was a secret government clean up agency. The 'Divers' theme was tasked with finding some underwater magical McGuffin to help fight the aliens. A 'flashback' scenario was played out at the same time with the 'Adventurers' series depicting how the McGuffin was originally found in ancient Egypt and subsequently lost again. Epic, epic times.

    This was a great trip down memory lane!
    I'm in that 1978-87 Lego Space generation. No goodies and baddies; no storylines; just explorers with radios and metal detectors. When I played with the old sets, it was all about fixing crashed spaceships, or missing astronauts. If I wanted to do space battles, I had my Star Wars toys to play with (at that time, only the Lego Castle sets had weapons - swords and shields). I figured the different coloured astronauts meant they had different jobs to do (like the colour-coded uniforms in Star Trek), not that they were rival factions. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I like the idea that the original space sets stuck to Lego's old, pacifist ideals - they didn't need weapons or police, the universe was interesting enough without them! (My last sets were the first "Light & Sound" sets - after that I grew out of playing with Lego...)

It was gifted to me by a family friend and here, 11 years later, I’m just learning what it was. It was an ice planet set. I believe I still have the minifigure from is somewhere, but I probably turned the set into something else over the years of Lego building. The Space theme of the 1900s was a great concept by creating multiple additions to one over arching theme over many years. Current Lego themes seem to be very serialized in terms of their world building and don’t often expand on themselves in the same way that the Lego systems space theme did. The many different factions each offered a completely unique identity and theme which allowed to build upon the open world of this theme. I wish Lego would do more themes with multiple different factions that can be collected instead of the good guy vs bad guy themes we often see. The Lego systems space theme was a little ahead of my time but finding the transparent and fluorescent pieces from these sets got me really excited. Those pieces were considered rare and collectible when I was a kid and I always wanted them!

    I'm sorry for the length of this comment.
    Igot into LEGO through Bionicle and didn't get into LEGO Space until 2014 with the LEGO Movie. Needless to say, Benny was very effective at promoting his theme.
    Since then, I've been buying what Classic Space sets and Minifigs I could. I don't have anything that predates the LEGO Movie (or Benny's Spaceship from said movie), but I bought CMF Benny with the robot arm, Benny's LEGO Dimensions Fun Pack, Benny's Space Squad a couple LEGO Movie sets featuring Benny, 2 90th Anniversary Galaxy Explorers, the Minifigs Book with the Orange Astronaut, the CMF Blacktron and Space Police Minifigs, a handful of CMF Brown Astronauts (with the baby Astronauts), the book with the Micro Scale Space Cruiser, a few sets with Minifigs that reference Classic Space, and a number of the City Space sets.
    And no, I don't have the GWP Blacktron set that just came out. I don't live anywhere near a LEGO Store, and I don't have a means to buy sets online. So sadly that set isn't part of my collection. But I do have one of the Martians oddly enough. I think it could be Vega, whichever one was the most common.
    And each year, a local toy store hosts a LEGO Display contest, and I eventually want to make a Classic Space display (if it fits with the theme) using my collection. Despite it mostly being comprised of sets and Minifigs released in the past decade, I want this display to honor the theme's history.
    I want to to be a base inspired by the original 1978 line of sets, mostly populated by those style of Astronauts. Fortunately the Galaxy Explorer has a radar print featuring the original Blacktron logo, so I'll sneak in the Blacktron Bounty Hunter on a secret infiltration mission in the base, with the Space Police guy hot on his trail. I may have to build MOC Spaceships for the two of them, so I might add Vega as a previously captured inmate or as a Blacktron bounty target. I may add other referential material if I find some in my collection. For example, the CMF Gamer Minifig has a Torso with several Space theme logos printed on it like M-Tron and the two Blacktron logos. Maybe I could find a way to justify City Space elements, because the logos are similar enough to possibly justify it. At least Solar Panels will be easy to justify.
    If anyone reads this, I am open to suggestions. I am still brainstorming, and the next Display is this August. The theme for the display hasn't even been picked yet.

    Our parents got some of these as kids, when we were around five, we took them in, but we are now low on the older precise. We were lucky to see these at all in person.

      That set is the first set in 20 years Lego has made that really got me interested in looking at what they had again. I like the Pacman set and the roller coaster. Other than that.... still.... who is at the helm of this company I wonder?

    Loved that little 1997-2001 period, which seemed so long because I was a kid at the time but it was just four years. I had sets from Insectoids, Life on Mars, UFOs, and other sets from around that period of time and loved them. Aquanauts/Aquazone too - even though it wasn't a space theme it had those vibes.

    I think this video is great. I miss the classic themes! I am really not at all fond of Lego's foray into licensed sets (though I totally understand why) or the evolution of themes like Ninjago, Chima, etc. I loved building castles and pirate ships and towns. I guess in my grumpy-old-man way, I'm saying I'd love to see more videos like this one based on the other classic themes!

    My very first lego kits were a couple smaller blacktron, mtron, and ice planet 2000 kits. I had those pieces for a really long time and by the time I was in my teens I had long lost the instructions and had no idea what the kits looked like lol. I still remember all the commercials for a lot of these sets from the 90's
