I gave up on c9’s a few years ago when I got tired of the electric bill. I tried box box led c9s and was soo disappointed. I gave up. I just realized I can buy smd c9 bulbs and put them in the old incandescent string. Now you just showed me I can customize my string lengths. This is a game changer and I’m back in the game. I love your videos. Thanks, i do have 1 question however. I have been using incandescent strings of abour 350 bulbs, obviously on seperate lines. I have an issue with still tripping my electric strips breaker.
Can i use the same steings and just change all thhe C9 incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs and that be fine. I have seen some articles saying you cannot put LED in incandescent lines. But i want to change EVERY bulb. Thanks for any information.

Have been binging your xmas videos. As a diy’er what tools would you recommend for getting on a steep roof?
The most important thing is that you stay on the roof. Home Depot sells some shoe covers cheaper than cougar paws called Korkers but I’ve never used them so I can’t recommend. If that’s not an option - soft soled tennis shoes. Other than that, an old pair of jeans,cutters and a lot of caution. Stay in the valleys and on peaks.

if I need 150 feet, would you say 1 100ft & 1 50ft is better or multiple 17 ft strings? I'm just worried if the 100ft goes bad, I'll need to take it down. I'm not trying to spend too much money this year on lights, but I'm still doing research on deciding on which route to take.

Came across your video which gave good information and was helpful.... never knew you can install a female in-line connector.... I went through the video several times and did not find any talk about the maximum number of strands or light you can plug into one power source... my house has 110 volt outlets with 400 feet of roof I want to install lights.... will one continuous strands of lights work?
Hey David. Glad it helped. 400’ would be no problem. Preferably you would put it on a dedicated breaker. recommend confirming that with your electrician.
@@lawnandlight I was told you can put 1000 C9 LED's on a lamp cord. Do the math yourself always. I do lights and we have had no problem with up to 450. No job has had more than that length to date

Best answer I can give you without looking: If it’s 3 wires - no. If it’s 2 wires - possibly
Thank you for the informative videos! With your help this is my first year using jumpers. I notice that the lines I previously bought come with a male-plug that has a fuse in it. Do I need one of these fused male plugs when I am starting a new section, or can I just use a male vampire plug without a fuse? When I plugged the new section in, I am not getting any power to the lights. I’ve double checked my connections. Could the lights not working also be caused by accidentally a polarity issue (not plugging the side with the white writing correctly? Thanks for the help!
It should work. It’s basically just a little extension cord. Try flipping the wire, put ribbed side of wire on bigger plug.

I watched your videos and learned a lot. I am not sure what to charge. Any Ideas or thoughts on what to charge? I have heard everything from $5 to $8 dollars a foot to $30 for each strand. I have looked up Christmas light stingers. On the websites it shows the lines starting with plugs that hold fuses, is there a difference? In other videos that I have also seen their lines do not start with that type of plug.
Typically the ones with fuses are continuous(I might not be using the right term here) meaning that if one bulb goes out, most of them will go out.

Outdoor Christmas lights and the materials associated with them are made water resistant.
can you do the whole house on a single outlet? I heard from some other guy that said 250 lights per outlet is the rule, but does it depend on bulbs? I'm getting those flexible filament bulbs.
I always say to consult and electrician because every bulb and wire is different. We’ve put more than 250 on a line before though

I just purchased a connection kit (12-pack) from you. Would a stringer set with SPT-2 insulation be okay with your male and female connections, or would it be too thick, and would I instead need a SPT-1 stringer? Thank you!
Hey Jonathan. You can make it work but it’s not ideal. It will be really hard to get it to fit the plug.

Question, why do you need jumpers on the dormers? can’t you just connect each outlet to each other as is? I’m assuming the jumpers are to make it look cleaner or am I missing something? Thank you
It’s an illustration. On a real house the distance is longer.
Do you have a video on LED lights install? ? ? ? ? For what I have found it’s not possible to do in line add on because the light will lose brightness and strands can not be shortened.
Hey there. I think you may be confused with the terminology of LED lights. The lights in our videos are LED 2 wire. Are you speaking of LED lights that are 3 wire? If so, you are correct, they can’t be shortened or use inlines
In my garage at this very moment I have about $350 worth of lights and all the other materials…today is the day I put the 4 hours I’ve spent watching and rewatching these videos to use…I’m pretty nervous. Haha

You could. Either one would work. Or some liquid tape. We use males and females for simplicity and to keep lines from getting to long for rolling up when you take them down
The in-line female seems a little confusing. you pop off the back but then it has to go on the wire on the side with white writing? it's running parallel with both sides so how do you know which way to put it on?
There are little copper teeth that push into the wire on the plug
Do any of your connections have fuses? I do not know anything about christmas lights but why you connect all this network all together and you can't connect regular christmas lights more than a few sets because the fuse blows?
No fuses. These lights are LED. They don’t pull much power

Hey Joan. Thanks for being here. Some people will tell you 250’ is the max for LEDs. If you want to stick with that you’ll be safe. However, that’s really a question for a licensed electrician and one that us Christmas light installers don’t touch on much due to many varying factors.

If using a 15 Amp 120v circuit, which is very common in the US, you can run a bunch of c9 led lights before ever hitting the limits of that circuit. Calculating at only 80% load, for safety, you could theoretically use about 1,900 bulbs and still be safe.
Is there a reason why you did not run one consecutive line along the top ridge and then just ran your other string of lights down from the top to plug into the gutter line?
Not necessarily. I think it’s subjective on this one. It could have been done several different ways. This is the way that made sense to us.
How do u work around splash guards on the gutters. Gutter guards go inside the gutters but splash guards stick up ontop of the gutters..
Great question. Several techniques but the easiest is that there is sometimes enough space to slide the clip between the gutter and splash guards.

Possibly a dumb question…. First time seriously decorating for Christmas. I have a bunch of big box store bought strings that I’ll use. Can I use the vampire plugs on store bought strings?
Not dumb. Most likely no. Most big box stores sell 3 wire lights. Commercial lights are 2 wire

Yea there’s no problem with that. Why mix spt1 & 2 though?

So I have an idea for Halloween this year, I bought about 15 pumpkins I plan to carve faces into and insert flicker bulbs into. I plan to place these throughout my graveyard scene. I would like to have all the bulbs connected to one line that I can then plug into my timer plug. How would i use this technique but starting without using a pre made light string?

Dude if I know 15 years ago to do videos of my lights of 30,000 incandescent lights and how easy and better looking then LEDs. All the manufactures would have tool. My roof outline was done the old fashion way paper and pencil, 375 feet of perfection one extension cord!!!

This method doesn’t work with icicles. You could still use the custom jumpers/lamp wire though.

Just got done doing about 180 ft on my house but noticed my lights will dim just a tiny bit then get bright again every couple minutes, any idea what it could be? Have check all the plugs and everything looks tight
Hey Juan. Lots of factors could come into play there. Best to speak with your electrician. One thing you can do quickly is plug into a different outlet that is on a different breaker to test.

@@juanmesta1 yes. they are most liking surging because of the power draw. Incandescents draw a huge amount of power
How long would it take you to install on the house in the video?
New install with 3 trained guys = 4-6 hours
Year 2 = 2 - 3 hours
How about a chimney instead of dormers. Would you outline it?
Hey Jon. To be frank, I wouldn’t. In all our years doing lights, we have only wrapped one chimney. It looked ok but it took away from all the clean lines of the house itself. We did it with minis so it was an obvious change of pattern. You could do it with hot glue and c9 bulbs but you would have to go back on the roof 3 or 4 times during the season to glue a few bulbs back up.

Great video! 2 Questions Is it possible to install the MALE plugs inline and have female plugs on each side? Do the male plugs have a break away tab? Thanks for the info.
Great question! Some electricians will say not to do that. However we have been doing it for years with no issue. There’s no knockout tab on males. You have to cut it out.
I do not recommend making online males. If you forget it's on there and the line is live it can shock you or ground out on something

Anytime! Thanks for watching. From our experience in thousands of installs that has never been an issue except when a female end is left in a place that pools water ie. Gutter that doesn’t drain or super low spot in yard.

One more. I looked at my ridgeline. I have lots of ridges and they intersect so it might be hard to do one inline off the mainline etc. So, can you do inline off the inline, etc. If you can, recommendations on the number of inlines off an inline using LEDs? @@lawnandlight

this is great for how to make connections, but wouldn't you have too many lights on one run? isn't there a limit of 120 c9 bulbs for that wire?
I’ve never heard 120 max before. Maybe for incandescent but now LED. Where did that # come from?
@@lawnandlight i read the label on my 1000' roll that i ordered. You might be right. I need to read it again and double check.
@@lawnandlight thank you for replying. Can have up to 933 bulbs on 1 run for the dimmable ones. And 466 for the non.dimmables led bulbs.
