  • Feared and regarded as dirty, dangerous and diseased, if there is one creature that tops the list of people's most hated animal, it is the much-maligned rat. Yet in Tanzania, scientists have trained rats to detect patients with tuberculosis, but what makes a rat's sense of smell so good?

Rats do get a bad rep and the plague wasn't rats at all but fleas, which would have affected other livestock and it didn't help that humans disposed of all waste matter into the streets. Fancy rats and the wild rat are physiologically and psychologically different from each other too. :)

They were girls I got them when I was 13 but after 3 years they sadly died, because one died of no cause we think it was old age and the other 2 got a huge lump which we googled was common in rats btw I’m 16 now so it was about last year/few months ago they died 😭

@@helenhoward2715 I'm sorry they died. They only live for about 3 years with good luck or care. They need to be taken to the vet, as often their illness can be cured or at least treated with medicine or surgery. If girl rats are spayed when they're younger, there is also less chance of them growing tumours. and most rats need to be put indefinitely on special antibiotics for their lungs for much of their life because of their delicate respiratory systems. Check out www.ratshackforum.com/ - the most knowledgeable rescue rat people! Great info for next time you're caring for ratties. :)

When it comes to mines made of plastic, glass, wood and others, intended to make detection difficult to the usual tools like metal detectors and the like, the Giant Rat and their handlers can help clear an area in an astonishing speed compared to a lone demineur with his knife. Also, they are predominantly women in these jobs, who have a vested interest in clearing small home farming plots and the roads and trails to and from water sources. Besides, they're so damn cute!

I wish I could get a giant African pouched rat as a pet, but they're unfortunately banned in Canada. Dammit. They look so neat! I've had standard pet rats for about 20 years, and have always been amazed at their intelligence, sweet natures, capacity for surprisingly deep emotions, and playfulness. They really are the best pets, especially for apartments or condos. I know that giant African pouched rats have only been domesticated for about 20 years, so they are still essentially tamed wild animals instead of pets though. Still, despite that, I hope I can get one someday.

The most heartbreaking part is how 1,500 people DIE every single DAY in Africa from TB alone...just TB. I can't even begin to imagine that...a disease that we almost eradicated decades ago here, you almost never hear about, and we rarely give thought to. Yet a few thousand miles away human beings are dying in droves absolutely horrible deaths while I'm here worrying about something petty like the added features of the next iPhone. It's a sobering reminder of the things I take for granted and shouldn't.
