- In this video I'm dismantling the remaining parts to the subframe. Removing control arms, kingpins from the steering knuckles, also removing the sleeve bushings ready for the new kingpins. I made up a work stand that will make it a lot easier to carry out the work.
Just learned new techniques to do the job!!! Thanks
Glad you liked it. Cheers John.
Interesting method for disassembling the brass bearings! Seems much easier than pressing them out... I reamed these new brass bearings myself by using an adjustable reamer after carefully pressing them back in on my 1965 220SEb. I think that would save you a few more bucks. Greetings from Germany
Thank you for the tip. I will definitely look into an adjustable reaming tool. Glad you like the video. Cheers from California. John.
Great video John, thank you for taking the time to record all the detail, had to laugh - when you said through a tone of frustration " Well? had to replace everything!" 😄. and then I thought yes you will be painting it all! 😁. I did much of this procedure as a 2nd year apprentice mechanic back in the mid 70's to a 220se I was looking to buy from the workshop I was apprenticed to, much hassle & drama.
I could never quite get my head around the engineering thinking of having a threaded pivoting "wear surface" of both the upper and lower knuckles and the control arm mounting points, it all works fine, - providing as you say regular greasing is maintained.
A word of caution - around using steel on steel / tensile steel punch on threading taps etc; - brass is preferred - yep I learned the hard way many years ago, still have the shrapnel scar 🤕.
Thank you again always informative and interesting.
Cheers Glenn, DownUnder.
You're right Glenn, I am going to paint:) Thank you regarding the steel on Steel punch. I should have used Brass. Glad you enjoyed the video. Appreciate your comments. Hope to visit Australia one day.
Cheers From California.
John.
Wonderful video. Thks, Oliver 😊
Thanks Oliver!!
Hey John, I am finding your videos very helpful! Recently aquired a 67 w110 from a family member. Do you have a link to the manual you reference? Having a hard time finding a service manual.
Hi Patrick. I bought my workshop manual privately some years back. They are available on some of the Mercedes facebook group sites from time to time. Or ebay etc. I did find this link to a database. It may help for the time being.

Great video, rebuilding the kingpin this winter. Where do you buy parts?
Thank you. A lot if the parts can be found at www.mbclassics.de/Home I like these guys and shipping is reasonable. Also try www.niemoeller.de/en Also very good. You can find a lot in the States too.
Cheers John 🍻
