    I can relate so much. I’ve been having IBS for 6 years and I just got diagnosed yesterday lol My symptoms are always worse in the mornings, whenever I have to go somewhere. Honestly it’s so hard to deal with this and idk how I’ll be able to have an actual career or a good life with this 😭

      @@jennymx17_ Yeah there's a lot to read and learn about it. Also everyones body is different, but I take the peppermint supplement twice a day: once after breakfast and once after dinner. I also take a probiotic (Garden of Life brand - 50 billion) and a magnesium supplement. My triggers I found were peanuts, all legumes, and soy, which I didn't realize was in EVERYTHING! Keep track of all your food!

    how do u manage to get stuff done that involves going outside the house with your ibs and anxiety? this past year ive struggled to step out of my front door, even for simpler things like going to the supermarket and also get on transport because i constantly panic that i'll feel nauseous or urgently need the bathroom whilst out and its affected my mental health so much. then i fall into a cycle of hating myself for never being productive and always cancelling plans to meet people :(

    • @AthenaStamakinley
      @AthenaStamakinley  Před 3 lety +4

      I've definitely been there. Most of the time I don't go to the store if I've been going through a flare up. I only go once I start to feel better, but it's extremely important to know your limits and not go to multiple places if you don't have the energy. I do panic and get anxious before going out so I try to go out after I've gone to the bathroom a few times and try not to eat anything before going out. I also use affirmations like "I will be okay." "I will not get sick" etc. It may seem dumb, but for me it works. I also try not to go anywhere too far from home so that if I feel like I'm going to need a bathroom urgently I can drive back home. I hope this helped and I hope you're doing okay!

      The same thing happens to me. I actually talked to a therapist and it really helps me. She told me that my anxiety stems from stress and lack of control of the condition. She said once you learn how to take the control back into your life and accept that you may get sick but that doesn't control you or define you then your stress may get better actually causing fewer flare-ups. Your brain is connected to your gut so a stressed brain equals a stressed gut. It is alot easier said than done but I am hoping I can get to that point. She said to just be prepared like know where the bathroom is, warn your friend about your condition and bring medicine you may need. I also have started listening to guided meditations when going through a flare-up because it helps ground me. Usually, once I get on the toilet my mind goes to the worst-case scenario and I panic myself,.

      @@daniellequaglia9652 I really love this. Therapy has been really helpful for me too. Learning to accept it, but also not letting it overcome me is tough, but I'm getting there. I've noticed fewer flare-ups lately too!! They only happen if I eat something really bad or when something extremely stressful occurs. I'm so glad that you've been finding relief in therapy and meditation. It's a long road to learn how to take care of mental health, but it's so worthwhile. hey Liv, u need to change ur mindset really big
      i'v been there too like 2 years ago, it was a pure horror.
      u dont need to hate urself, i know its hard, but there is no reason to hate urself, ibs shit just happens to u, it sucks, but u need to learn to love urself even if u cant meet ur friends because of this shit.
      meditating with headspace can help u a lot with that
      and with meditations ur mindset gonna change. anyway its not an easiest thing to change ur mindset cuz u live like that for many years, and changing something can be very very challenging, but we all can do this. u should turn this "im scary to go to the supermarket or transport cuz i can shit my pants" to "i dont care EVEN if im gonna shit my pants at the supermarket (and we all know u not gonna do this, even if it feels like it u can always run from supermarket outside or whatever) fucking ibs is not gonna control my life" once u understand what im talkin bout and u gonna practice ur walks firstly to the supermarket, then on transport, then on something bigger and it gets better. but to control ur anxiety u need to meditate every day, it helps fucking a lot.
      in 2018 i was a guy with agoraphobia, ibs and constant panic attacks (its like 50meters from home i felt panic and diarrhea), meditation helps me a lot.

    For me, I’m SO sensitive to sweets/greasy foods. If I eat them I will get very constipated the next day. I’ve been eating a lot of fiber foods but if I eat to much fiber it can also king of cause constipation. I don’t know why that happens but it does. So I have to eat like a tiny bit of sweets to balance it out if that makes any sense. I just wish I could eat and poop normally again..

    I have IBS and am extremely embarrassed to poop anywhere but home, because of people hearing or smelling my poop, so I often deal with more pain if I'm out or won't go out so I don't have to poop in public, or at someone's house, do you have similar problems?

    • @AthenaStamakinley
      @AthenaStamakinley  Před 4 lety +2

      I used to deal with that more, but I was still in college when all this started happening. Luckily the bathrooms were more private but yeah I've definitely dealt with that. I never hold it though because I'll end up feeling worse, so I just tell myself "who cares if someone notices? we all poop"

    • @MikeSmith-cy5ip
      @MikeSmith-cy5ip Před 4 lety +2

      @@AthenaStamakinley I know everyone poops, but for some reason, I hate the idea of anyone knowing I'm pooping or that I poop in general, was there any way you got over it, or was it just over time, people made fun of me for pooping at school and in college so it made it harder for me to feel it was a normal thing. I still can't poop around my girlfriend either, sorry if this is gross, its hard to talk about

    • @AthenaStamakinley
      @AthenaStamakinley  Před 4 lety +4

      @@MikeSmith-cy5ip It's not gross. The reason why I'm making these videos is so that people feel more comfortable talking about it. Honestly it depends on how comfortable you are with your gf. My bf and I talk about poop all the time and don't care lol but maybe we're just super weird. The only way I got over it/got more comfortable was telling myself repeatedly that it's normal and nothing to be ashamed of. Also looking at funny IBS memes really helps me not have a negative outlook on it because I know someone out there experiences the same exact thing I do and can laugh about it. I think this is more difficult for you because you were judged for it. I'm super sorry that happened. It's okay to be insecure, but if this is something you want to work on with you gf, for example, maybe try having a conversation with her and explaining your condition and how it makes you feel. If someone I cared about had a conversation like that with me I know I would not judge them and would be more aware/caring/sensitive about the topic.

    • @AthenaStamakinley
      @AthenaStamakinley  Před 4 lety

      @@MikeSmith-cy5ip Also another way I overcame it was just straight up owning it and saying it out loud to people. If you own it, then people can't make fun of you because you're confident in yourself. I use humor a lot to make this easier. I'll just jokingly say like " well my insides hate me!" or "I can poop every color of the rainbow!" It takes the power away from other people who might make fun of you because you're already making fun of yourself. I hope this makes sense.

    • @MikeSmith-cy5ip
      @MikeSmith-cy5ip Před 4 lety +3

      @@AthenaStamakinley it'd be great if you could make a video about the topic, I know I'm not the only one embarrassed about pooping in public, though its a little rarer being a guy in that situation, I told my gf about it today, and we are just going to try to ease into it, and we are both going to try to tell each other when we have to poop, not in a weird way but to make it seem less taboo, I would rather die than poop in front of her in the bathroom but I assume most couples don't do that

  • @alexchristensen67

    also even on your “better” days, how much does it still affect your ability to do what you want to that day? do you still have to be strict on your activities then or are there times where you can push aside some restrictions to do the the things you normally can’t do?

    • @AthenaStamakinley
      @AthenaStamakinley  Před 4 lety +1

      On better days I am definitely able to do more, but I do have to keep to a strict eating schedule and make sure I don't forget to take any meds or supplements. It's all about being aware, so like today for example, I had a ton of energy to clean and stuff but I started feeling a lot of back pain so I had to sit down and chill for a bit. I was able to keep going after just sitting for like 20 minutes with the heating pad. And because I've been feeling better recently (I really think peanut butter was messing me up) I've been riding my bike a couple times a day but only for 5 minutes at a time. Eventually I can work my way up to being able to ride a mile or so like I used to! Love you and love this question!!! Thanks for being you
