This is my personal experience with IBS. It's been 8 years so there's obviously a lot more I could talk about! Overall I think I'm pretty lucky as I know some people have it much worse and it hasn't seriously impacted my quality of life. It was a constant worry though and I'm not sure I ever went an hour without thinking about it! So I'm very glad to have more control & a bit more peace now!

IBS affects around 11% of the global population, (that’s one in every 9 people you meet!!) so let’s not be embarrassed about it! I want this channel to be a safe, open and kind place for people dealing with IBS. We’re far from alone, so let’s ask questions, share advice and feel better together xx
    ▽ What are FODMAPs?
The term FODMAP is an acronym, derived from "Fermentable, Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols”. They are short carbohydrates found in lots of healthy foods, which the bacteria in your intestines will break down, producing gas in the process.
For unclear reasons, some people are particularly sensitive to this and experience painful and embarrassing symptoms such as bloating, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, constipation and fatigue. FODMAP restriction has been found to improve symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID).
    ▽ What is a Low-FODMAP Diet?
The Low-FODMAP diet usually involves carefully cutting the down the amount of FODMAPs you consume over a day and at one time for 2-6 weeks until your symptoms resolve or at least become manageable. Then you “re-challenge” each type of FODMAP individually to see how sensitive you are to them. Thankfully most people can tolerate some or all of the FODMAPs at certain levels or combinations.
    ▽ Is it forever?
NO! From this feedback, you can reintroduce foods in a way that won’t set off your symptoms. Your tolerance will likely improve over time, so you can always retest foods when you feel up to it.
    ▽ Resources For Vegan Low-FODMAPers
These are the two things I’ve found to be invaluable since starting the low-FODMAP diet.
The first is the official app* from The Monash University. It’s the easiest and most up-to-date way to check what foods are A-okay and how big your portion size can be. Measurements come in grams, as well as "cups", which is great as a brit!
    itunes.apple.com/us/app/monas...
The second is the ONLY vegan cookbook* I’ve found among the masses of meat-filled low-FODMAP ones. Admittedly it's not totally my style of cooking but it has been a great inspiration and it is very informative.

      Pathogen
In biology, a pathogen in the oldest and broadest sense, is anything that can produce disease. A pathogen may also be referred to as an infectious agent, or simply a germ. The term pathogen came into use in the 1880s. Typically, the term is used to describe an infectious microorganism or agent, such as a virus, bacterium, protozoan, prion, viroid, or fungus. Small animals, such as certain kinds of worms and insect larvae, can also produce disease.
I'm not a doctor nor am I giving you medical advice. I'm explaining what I have found successful. I placed 1 inch of water in a cup. Then put 10 drops of povidone iodine in it. Performed this procedure four times in a week. Remarkable changes took place. (There is few known pathegens that can stand up to iodine. The results are speechless

WOW... I’m literally crying because you explained my entire life with your life story. I’m currently 19 and ever since I was 13 I was always confused why my stomach was affected so easily by all the foods that everyone else ate on a daily basis. My stomach would bloat so easily and I could easily be put into stomach pain for the entire day by something that I ate. I would get picked on for my bloated tummy which made me insecure about my waist. It would frustrate the hell out of me when my friends could eat the shittiest food and have the flattest stomachs, while I tried so hard to eat healthy and if I ate the smallest piece of something, my stomach would expand and I would get stomach pains again. I’ve been adjusting my diet for YEARS, and everyone would tell me to stop trying these diets. I wasn’t trying diets though, I just didn’t want to be out in discomfort every time I ate something “wrong” whatever that could be. It wasn’t until I went to Greece for a study abroad did I notice a drastic increase in my discomfort. All the food there was meat or carbs and I was vegetarian at the time so I could only eat greasy carbs. I always tried to eat healthy but I was forced to eat pasta and bread every day which made my stomach hurt every single day. There were nights I couldn’t sleep because I was so constipated and in so much pain. After Greece I kept adjusting my diet, believing I had a gluten intolerance or a dairy intolerance. It got to the point where I thought I had an intolerance to all food. It’s dangerous cause I would tell myself not to eat in order to not get bloated and discomfortable. It wasn’t until I finally decided to do some actual research that I found your video. This is truly the most relieving and inspiring thing I’ve come upon. All these life questions you just answered. Thank you for creating this and putting out something that many would find uncomfortable sharing. I never related and felt for a human more than this because IBS has caused me so much pain in my life. And you just helped me:)

Oh my god that cramps thing and smiling and breathing through it is so accurate. Thank you for sharing. I am still having pretty debilitating ibs symptoms and honestly, its so difficult because the scale of extremities of how awful these symptoms can be is so large and so many people just assume that is such a benign thing because its so common but there have been so many days where its just been so rough and I know exactly what you mean when you feel frustrated that other people get to eat whatever they want yet it feels like you're being punished despite trying so hard. I am 19 and I have been struggling with digestive issues for probably over 4 years or 5 years but in the last two years I have been undergoing intensive investigations to figure out whats going wrong and under a year ago I was diagnosed with ibs. I recently started university in a new country and have been dealing with a couple of other health problems so its been pretty rough but honestly I love your videos, they're so cheerful and bright. I’m 16, I’ve had Ibs since around 13. It’s a nightmare. An absolute nightmare. For three years now which feels like a lifetime I experience symptoms like bloating and stomach rumbling for no reason. I’m at wits end and notice how I’m slowly slipping back into depression as my life moves faster than I can handle. My life, talking about relationships, chilling with friends or basically any social situation has gotten so awkward and full of anxiety that I try to avoid any outing. It’s just hard because I want to do things but I don’t allow myself because I know my Ibs will act up. Especially the stomach rumbling is keeping me up. Luckily some of the symptoms that the people in the comments are experiencing aren’t as common with me. I don’t often have diarrhea or constipation, just a lot of stomach rumbling and at times I need to go to the bathroom twice a day, and the gassy comes and goes, sometimes I’m extremely gassy for months and than it’s pretty good for a few weeks. For me I think I’m lactose intolerant too, I’m trying to keep a diary but I can’t just not eat things. I’m addicted to food and I don’t have the willpower to change my whole diet when it might not even work. You might think I’m overreacting and I have it easier than some maybe yes, but all I want is someone who understands. Does anyone have advice, generally and for my stomach rumbling?

Hey, Im having similar experience as yours… its been nearly 4 years and now due to some medication and self control, im able to plan outings and have a social life(awkward and very anxious one, but better than not getting out of ur house)
Two things which helped me the most were a food diary and workouts… Ive started recording what I ate and the quantity of it and note how my stomach reacted to it… Once u start revisiting the diary every week you’ll realise what is actually bad for you
And workout helped me to properly schedule my movement and mainly eat healthy, cuz once you go and sweat like a pig to burn those calories, craving for junk or “rich” foods will drastically decrease

I'm sobbing with happiness that I just came across your channel. When I was quite young I suffered from the most extreme stomach cramps where I would reside to lying on my side and not moving for hours because I couldn't breathe with the pain. A few years ago, my mum and I had had enough and after an abundance of doctor appointments we finally came across the low FODMAP diet through a dietitian which completely changed my life. However at the time I sort of brushed off all the things she was saying because I just loved all kinds of foods and refused to believe they would cause me such pain and discomfort. I recently realised that things like dates, cherries, mangoes, onion, garlic and apples would upset my stomach and I started getting really self conscious about the fact that my stomach stuck out more than other people's (even if they were larger than me) and it was always hard despite me not having rock hard abs. So watching your video and being able to relate to so many of your symptoms has me realising that the dietitian I saw might have been on to something! Wowee I really should have listened but I am so determined to get back on board with a low FODMAP diet. - And as a plus, I went vegan a year and a half ago so I am extremely grateful for your channel and for sharing your story.

Hi. I have just stumbled upon your videos after looking up other sufferers. I have had stomach pain pretty much every day for the last 10 years. I have suffered in silence for years and never really changed any aspect of my life, however recently my symptoms have turned into diarrhoea. I have always suffered with urgency but never full blown diarrhoea. Finally decided to go and see my GP and they are sending me for blood tests to start. After googling symptoms for days now I am terrified this maybe something more serious. Seeing other people like your self who’s symptoms sound very similar to mine certainly are helping with my nerves/anxiety in waiting. Thank you

I struggled with tonsillitis for years and years when I was younger and would be pumping penicillin and erythromycin several times a year for sometimes the length of a month until I had my tonsils removed at 14.... my gut was simply destroyed following that time. Hello 😊 So I was recently told I have IBS. They first diagnosed me with gastritis, told me to take a ton of over the counter medications, none of which worked, and after a month or so, I was finally referred to a GI specialist. Nothing helped for “gastritis” remedies I found online so things were a bit confusing. The GI doc then told me I needed to get an endoscopy done, but I wanted to see another GI specialist first for a second opinion. The second GI doc said he doesn’t think I need an endoscopy at the moment and told me he thinks I have IBS. He told me to stop taking all of my medications and told me instead to take peppermint pills and ginger room capsules. Not sure if the ginger root does much, but the peppermint pills do wonders. He also said that stress reduction and mindfulness meditation.
    Thanks for posting!

I love that you made this video. I’ve been recently diagnosed with post-infectious IBS after getting food poisoning or a stomach flu on New Years (not the best way to start 2020). It really can make me feel alone sometimes. My parents and friends regularly ask me how I’m doing and how I’m feelingand they really are very understanding, but it’s hard to explain to them the frustration that comes with IBS and how someday I can feel great and then the next day I feel absolutely horrible and bloated. So it’s nice to hear other people talk about similar experiences. I also really relate to you about how you just learn to manage some stuff (for me it’s going to the bathroom, I’ve worked out quite the routine there), but some stuff is just hard to manage. For me it’s mostly a nauseous feeling that I find hard to deal with. I guess what I’m trying to say is thank you for making this video. It might not be a fun subject to talk about but it’s nice to know you’re not alone :).

    • @nvbergen
      @nvbergen Před 4 lety

@@DDAWGVlogs Yes, the same thing here. I'm not really in pain or I don't really suffer from cramps that much, but just the continuous feeling of being nauseous, it definitely takes a toll on your mental state! I had a lot of invasive procedures done to rule out anything else, since I had lost 3kg in about 3 weeks, which was a lot for me. Since nothing was found on those exams and since I could pinpoint the onset of my symptoms to an exact event and date the doctor diagnosed me with post-infectious IBS. Since my symptoms are somewhat mild (I haven't really had any cramping or serious pain), and since it was post-infectious, the doctor told me he expects my symptoms will go away with time (so I'm one of the lucky ones in that aspect), but it could take months or even years unfortunately. So I'm trying to look up similar stories, figuring out what foods trigger me, trying to work on my mental state (go out with friends who understand that I might not always be feeling too good, I've been doing a lot more creative stuff again, reading, pilates,...), but that's pretty much all I can do.

I can totally empathise! I went to the doctor when I was 19 and I first noticed symptoms. They told me it was IBS and that soluble or insoluble fibre was the culprit. I understand that they didn’t know the cause back then, but it was the fact that they just left me to deal with it by myself as a 19 year old (and of course changing the fibre amounts didn’t work either). I just felt stuck with it. I went vegan 3 years ago and also try to eat as many vegetables and nuts and legumes etc thinking that I’m doing something good for myself, but I feel actually worse too! About to embark on the low fodmap elimination phase now - wish me luck!

I know this video is over two years old but I just found your channel and I wanted to say thank you. I am 20 years old and have been struggling with IBS for the past 3/4 years since I started having some mental health issues when I was in high school and taking various medications. My stomach issues have gotten worse over the past year, and I finally went to a GI in February who told me I had “mild” IBS, but didn’t really tell me what could be done about it. It definitely didn’t and still doesn’t feel mild- I feel like every time I eat, I feel bloated and sick. I get horrible cramps and diarrhea, and most days I feel like I have to spend a significant amount of time just lying down trying to breathe through gas pain and discomfort. It can definitely feel embarrassing to have to modify my life around my bad stomach and it’s so frustrating to feel like no matter how “well” I eat, nothing seems to help and it’s still only considered a mild condition by a lot of the people around me. But watching this video and reading the comments have made me feel so much better and I so appreciate you speaking about this and doing so much work to help other people. I will definitely be watching your other videos and trying to incorporate your diet advice. 💗

Thank you for your candor and tact. Talking about IBS symptoms, even with medical professionals, let alone friends, family, or partners, is really difficult and embarrassing. Sharing in this kind of space takes, well...guts! 🙂 My IBS symptoms started about two years ago and it's only been recently that I finally understood how low FODMAP works as a tool to help me discover what I should and shouldn't eat. I'd started trying a vegan diet shortly before IBS hijacked my gut (had been a lifelong meat eater), and I suspect that had something to do with it--too big a change too quickly. Since then I've found that a keto-ish diet helped IBS symptoms, but low FODMAP is the ticket. For planetary and ethical reasons, though, I'd really like to eat vegan. So I'm excited to have come across your channel. Thank you for being here.

Thank you for sharing your IBS story - I’m currently in the fetal position watching this, been diagnosed with IBS as of one week ago. It’s been hard to come to terms with. For me, my symptoms were never gradual. They were sudden. I woke up one day with cramping and a dull ache - that was 2 months ago and I can count on one hand the days I’ve had pain-free since then. Everyday has been a struggle in the last 2 months. My pain varies from stabbing, sharp, tight pressure, back & thigh aches, twinging pain, spasms & chest pain. I would have never though IBS pain could feel this bad so it never came to mind that my gut was the problem. I’ve spent nights crying. Days off work unpaid. I was active before all of this. I ended up in the ER a few weeks ago because the pain got so bad one night, I collapsed. The hospital sent me home saying I seemed healthy & fine. Just to take pain killers & go back to my doctor. Because my symptoms hadn’t developed over some time & came on quite suddenly, I had to undergo a lot of tests and scans to make sure it wasn’t anything more. I also had to be ruled out of endometriosis. The scans came back all clear and I don’t have endo. So the doctors said to me I may have IBS. I insisted I don’t and pushed for further testing. I didn’t want to believe it. Last week I saw a specialist who said I 100% have IBS. It’s overwhelming to me how one day I was fine, then the next day I woke up in pain & it’s been like that since. I don’t have diarrhea or constipation, like most others experience. I was sure it was something else but hey at least I’m glad my scans are all healthy otherwise. Just gotta live with this now & cut out foods I love eating 😔 For me, my issue lies with the actual digestion process - I retain gas too much & it’s painful to pass through. I also have very high stress & anxiety. When I meditate, the pain subsides. I have been following my specialist’s advice about cutting out certain foods (like wheat, pasta, pizza, pastries, high amounts of soy, high sugar, noodles) and the last few days I’ve felt less pain. So it appears to be working. Hoping for continued improvement & I’m doing my own research on what may help. Really glad to not be alone, sorry for the long story. Thanks again ❤️

@@danderson4613 Hi there! Thank you for reaching out to me to ask how I am 😊 Since I posted this comment, it's come to light that I definitely have IBS-C, too. My digestion is slow and it's not the act of going per-say, more-so that I don't go at all for days at a time ... I can relate to you and I completely understand how it feels. I still suffer from extreme bloating most days, other days it's barely there. The pain I experienced this time last year with my IBS isn't as bad now, thankfully - I have modified my diet and keep a great balance of foods, although I still do occasionally eat junk and things that cause me a little discomfort afterward. It's hard because some foods are way too tempting and my fiancé is an ex-chef, haha. It's still upsetting that even with modifying my diet, exercise and keeping my fluids up (I barely used to touch water!), I still experience issues with not going to the toilet for up to 4-5 days at a time. So, knowing that all this "stuff" is sitting inside me and not being excreted, it is a massive bummer to deal with on a day to day basis. I avoid wearing tighter clothes nowadays and there are days where I feel super sluggish - but other days I feel light and refreshed (particularly the days I have managed to go to the toilet). Above all really, it's the slow digestion that affects me nowadays, otherwise, I don't suffer a lot of pain like I used to, I still get mild cramping and bad gas + sharp pains when food is passing through here and there. It's a good thing you mentioned intermittent fasting, I have given it a go recently actually and it seems to help! I would like to continue it for sure. How have you been feeling and are there any struggles you deal with daily such as mine? 😊

It's made worse by the fact that no one really knows what to do about it. Definitely try the low FODMAP thing, but you have to do it very strictly. You'll notice a massive difference in just a couple of weeks. Don't make my mistake though - introduce foods back in slowly so you can take notes and really figure out which ones are causing your gut to go nuts.

Your voice is very calming thankfully! I have cramps again tonight, my only symptom. There's a way they might calm enough to sleep or just escalate so I can vomit everything out.
It's wierd how you can go so long feeling ok and then it will just hit you a few times in a week. I need to get my head round all these fodmaps and get organised, I'm not sure how you can know which one was the trigger when there is a sort of delayed reaction and most meals contain multiple food groups anyway.
I might just try living on Huel and ricecakes for a while!

I just realised I've had IBS since I was around 13, and I'm now soon 33. 20 years of bloating! Kind of crazy what you learn to live with. And the skirt thing... Anything that isn't stretchy is just horrible. My life changed for the better when leggings became socially acceptable to wear again. I don't think I'll ever buy a pair of trousers with buttons/zippers again in my life.

I think the acceptance is both good and bad, because if we didn't get used to/learned to ignore problems with our body, living with things like IBS or fibromyalgia would be completely unbearable. But the downside is of course that we get so used to it that we don't seek medical help for things. In any case, I'm very excited about the FODMAP possibilities. :)

Didn't know I had ibs until literally a few days ago from this post. But I went vegan, in hopes it would lessen the pain. While yours was going out too much, mine wasn't coming out at all and my gut would stretch to unbearable limits. I was thinking to myself yesterday "none of this is fair, I already limit myself by not eating animal products, now I can't even eat beans and broccoli or garlic" I was super frustrated and lost. But I found your channel and I'm gonna explore more and imitate your style before recreating it for my daily needs. Thank you

IBS in itself is very subjective, it's one of the most underrated disease as there's no medicines that can cure it. The symptoms also vary, it's not just the A, C and D.
I personally have regular stools(not very normal though), but bad headaches, gas and mouth bitterness. It does have a lot of impact on your mental health and further exacerbate the condition. So for those who have done all the internet research and still wondering why your symptoms don't fit under usual IBS symptoms, don't worry sometimes they aren't very linear.
PS. Don't Google too much either adds up to the mental stress.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I relate so much to this. When I was 14 I had a severe eating disorder and lost a lot of weight. Luckily I got treatment quite quickly and started recovering and eating more when I was about 15/6. Ever since I have had terrible gas and stomach issues. The worst part was that the gas would come about at the most random times so I would be at work or at school or out with friends and would be suddenly extremely gassy and it would smell terrible. It was so embarrassing! I would eat vegan and lots of veggies and nothing changed. Now I’m 22 and this past year I’ve been getting extremely painful bloating like you described in the video. Tried gluten free and dairy free but nothing worked. I was just told about FODMAP earlier this year and am going to start the process tomorrow. I hope it helps! Thanks so much for your video and looking forward to trying all your recipes ☺️☺️

If it's any consolation, having spoken with my friends more openly since, none of them actually remember all those times I was gassy and smelly, even though it felt like a big deal to me!
On another note, as the low FODMAP diet is very restrictive it would be worth speaking with a dietitian first because it can be quite triggering if you have a history of ED and there are gentler approaches you can try instead. Hope you feel better soon! x

I’m in my 40’s and have had IBS for about 5 years now. I still experience the bloating, anxiety, frustration, depression, acid reflux, constipation, and the worst of all the IBS flare ups that send me to the hospital and they run tons of tests even though I’ve told them that it’s a flare up from my IBS. Then they pump me full of pain meds, and a injection / steroid for the inflammation and vomiting and tell me to see my gastro intestinal doctor. When I see my GI doctor I’m told to follow my low fodmap diet, along with NO GLUTEN or dairy. I’m at a point right now that I’m scared to eat and I don’t have any social life because I’m always in pain with a flare up or bloating pain/ discomfort . I’m literally losing my mind and feel completely alone. I wish doctors would take this more serious and instead of shoving pamphlets and books at me , really help educate me on what I need to do. I’ve begun my own research online and have just been listening to my body which isn’t very much because like I’ve stated I’m scared of food now. I was diagnosed with IBS 8 months back. I'm almost 22 years old now. And I think it all started with final semester in college. I was really stressed out during exams. And then I took a drop year to prepare for entrance exams for masters. 2019 was such a stressful year for me. I was also diagnosed with pcos in November 2019. Both these conditions come simultaneously to haunt me. I'm a vegetarian. I try my best to just eat fruits, vegetables and no junk. I do either yoga or exercise everyday. But still I get really bad cramps either due to IBS flare ups or due to pcod. I'm more aware of my body now. But sometimes nothing helps. It hurts a lot to see my friends eating whatever they want and I on the other hand eaiting healthy, doing exercises, still getting cramps and stomach issues.
I can totally relate to you how this feels. Especially in this age when we are so young and we shouldn't be worrying about stomach problems so much.
