Is Taiwan a part of China? | VPRO Documentary

  • It is more than seventy years ago that the current People's Republic of China was established and the nationalists fled to Taiwan. Is Taiwan a part of China?
In the final episode, Ruben therefore travels from mainland China to Taiwan in search of stories from people in both countries who have experienced this charged history. Why do the Chinese think that Taiwan belongs to China today? What do the Taiwanese want their future to look like? Are they afraid that their lives will change drastically?
In Chinese dreams, documentary maker and China expert Ruben Terlou travel further through China, driven by his fascination for the Chinese and with the rapidly changing society as a compass.

I am from Taiwan, and it’s a very interesting yet strange question to answer. I am in my late 20s and my generation think we are Taiwanese, not Chinese. Therefore, Taiwan is of course not part of China. The majority of people (of my generation) and younger will not think Taiwan belong to China.
This question exists because of the strange entanglement of our history. Taiwan was ruled or colonized by different people, such as Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese (from 1895 to 1945.) So if you ask old people who lived through Japanese ruling. They will say they are Japanese. It’s no joking. The first president elected by Taiwanese people, Lee Tung-Hui 李登輝, thought himself more Japanese than Taiwanese.
The turning point of Taiwanese history is when the Nationalist Government retreated to Taiwan after failing the civil war against Communist Party. The Chinese Communist Party took over China in 1949, and it marked the birth of Red China. The Nationalist Government and the generation grew up in Mainland China, and naturally they think themselves are “Chinese”. Taiwan island is just a place reluctant or in transit. They will return to homeland one day. Their dream never comes true and time goes by til today.
In ancient China, it’s a long standing tradition that when new dynasty was established, there shouldn’t be anything left from the old dynasty. New emperor needed to “unify” every inch of the kingdom to prove legitimacy. It applies to the status quo. Taiwan is deemed as the rebel from the old dynasty and we are not allowed to exist. So China does everything to isolate us on the world stage.
Identity conflict or crisis is still a big problem in 2020, and it will not go away anytime soon. In fact , political leaders also manipulate the identity problem for their interest here. Populist is on the rise to some degree, which is a little alarming as well.
People from different generation have different take on whether Taiwan is part of China. But it’s certain most young people don’t think so.
Taiwan Strait is one of the most heavily militarized zone in the world. The “Taiwan Problem” is one of (if not the most) sensitive topic for Chinese government. We are like a chess played by both Chinese and American Government. Both sides treat us based on its own interests. Anything can go wrong easily if not handled appropriately. The conflict could be whole-scale, because no one know what will happen if China decides to take over Taiwan by force someday. If America sends troops as it promised to protect Taiwan, the costs of military conflict between two great powers is beyond imagination. It’s not exaggeration, but a reality many people overlook.
Therefore, as an individual from Taiwan, I want to express gratitude to Vpro for making the video. We need more people from all over the world to know more about Taiwan. This is the foundation for future dialogue between us and the world. For anyone still reading, please see the video or share it. Small changes are incremental. Everyone in Taiwan will appreciate it!
    P. S. By the way, everyone should visit Taiwan after the pandemics is over. We are one of the role model in handling the pandemics. We are eager to welcome everyone to come and visit. You will not feel disappointed, trust me:)

Look what happen with Covid they never trusted China reports and there are the results. Taiwan must be free and independent they are by fact.

In all official maps, Taiwan is a part of China, both in the constitutions of the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China, Taiwan is also a part of China, the Chinese living in Taiwan call their country the Republic of China, which is also written in in their constitutions and on the cover of their passports. There is no country called "Taiwan" in the world. In fact, the civil war in China that started in 1945 has not ended. Some of the 23 million Chinese living in Taiwan want to split from China, while the 1.4 billion Chinese people Most of them are completely unacceptable. If a vote is used to decide whether or not Taiwan is independent, the party that advocates Taiwan's independence will have an overwhelming defeat. The United States has taken advantage of this chaotic situation and used it to create trouble for China in an attempt to contain China's development, and the current ruling party in Taiwan also regards American military power as their only bargaining chip for survival. The real purpose of the United States is to dominate the Pacific Ocean and block other countries on the mainland, especially China. Because of Taiwan's important strategic location, the United States regards it as a pawn to restrict China. Once the Pacific War begins, Taiwan will surely become a battleground for both sides, and the artillery fire will be ruthless. The United States is seeking the entire Pacific Ocean, and China can only smoothly free up its legs to move forward by putting its testicles (Taiwan) back in its crotch.

Well, here's the thing. Suppose that CCP spontaneously disintegrate into several separate parties, and mainland China have some sort of general election, I would wager the party getting elected would be some hilariously far-right ultranationalist party. And we would end up with the exact same set of Taiwan straits problems.
The mainland Chinese are, in general, very nationalist nowadays, especially the young people. And that is without intervention from the "Communist" party. Hell, the party is only taking advantage of this sentiment (which admittedly they had a hand in creating). And that's what's so fucking scary about the whole thing.
Democracy doesn't mean that people won't elect right-wing nutjobs with a irredentist streak. There are plenty of examples of government doing crazy shit with democratic, popular support. Democracy only means that powers are diluted, and there is less chance of that happening, but it is not sufficient to stop it from happening.

@@profriday Well, not really, Canada is actually pretty decentralized (John A.'s dream of strong centralized federal government never really panned out). While currently Wexit is being treated like the joke that it is, it could very well be the start of something resembling Brexit. Also, people don't appreciate just how close that '95 referendum was, how close the confederation was going to fall apart.
Talking about Brexit, I wouldn't be surprised if there is going to be another push for Scottish independence. After all, the promise that kept the original IndyRef from succeeding was that UK would be part of EU. So UK is really not a good example either.
As for real democracy? Well, there are democracy that have a very centralized structure. Still a democracy, though. Of course, it's not a panacea, and solving real problems would require resources and political willpower, democratic or otherwise.
