A thrilling, horror film based on a true story about a single lawyer (Laura Linney), who takes on the church and the state, when she fights for the life of a priest (Tom Wilkinson), who has performed a deadly exorcism on a young woman. Linney must battle the cocky state lawyer (Campbell Scott) as well as her own demons, as she realizes that her career so far has not led her to fulfillment.

This movie is scarier than The Exorcist and it is as scary as The Conjuring.
I don't know if I would say it's scarier than the Exorcist. That movie was pretty intense.
Don't put that garbage conjuring nonsense in the same sentence as this or The Exorcist. It was not scary, it was poorly written and compared to this - poorly acted too, though Famiga did excellent, the rest were mediocre at best.

Being a practicing Catholic, this is one of the movies I always watch during Lent, often watching it on Holy Week, most especially on Good Friday, aside from The Passion of the Christ. And for one good trivia, this entire scene references the story of Jesus and the Gerasene Demoniac, found in Mark 5:1-20, Matthew 8:30-37, and Luke 8:27-38. Here are the points:
1. The six demons allude to the Legion found in the possessed Gerasene, who spoke to Jesus and introduced themselves. The demons here also introduce themselves. Interestingly enough, a member of the Legion who was among those commanded by Christ to leave resides in Emily.
2. Emily letting out a final scream alludes to Jesus exorcising the possessed Gerasene, who also screamed as they leave the man and head to the herd of pigs.
3. The runaway horses reference the herd of pigs that drowned after the demons fled to them. Both animal species were driven crazy and spooked before they fled. It is likely that when Emily screamed, the demons went to the horses and the pack fled into the night, presumably dying in the storm offscreen, much like how the pigs headed to the lake and drowned.
4. The setting of Christ and the Gerasene demoniac depends on which book you read: Gerasa (today Jerash) in Mark and Luke while it is Gadara (today Umm Qais) in Matthew. Both towns are located in the present-day Kingdom of Jordan and are pilgrimage sites.
