That lead off tune is called "Namely You", from (of all things), the film "Lil' Abner"...sung by Peter Palmer to Leslie Parrish as Abner and Daisy Mae.
To me Art Farmer is the best of the trumpeters...Farmer, Miles, Lee Morgan and Dorham. In that order. Thanks a lot for this precious document. Much appreciated.
>jjazzhistory: thanks for sharing. Good job you did with audio quality considering it was transferred from a VHS tape. Added to my favorites, it's very enjoyable...
Thanks a lot for sharing! Art Farmer is one of most lyrical soloists in Jazz and his association with Fred Hirsch was a productive one. I especially like their quartet dates and still listen to them from time to time. To me, that's the best work Fred Hirsch has done in his career.
+icecreamforcrowhurst Yes I have, not a big fan of Billy Harper's music but I remember he did a fairly good job with it. To me, with Art Farmer it's a combination of good material and overall straight ahead concept that's allows piano player to be creative but not too "far out" or self indulgent as Fred sometimes tends to be. But he's always professional and that's not something to sneeze at. Just my 20 cents.....
+vova47 yeah, I'm a big fan of Art. Obviously very different vibe from Billy Harper but wow, Billy Harper is special; deep, intense, spiritual. I thought Fred was a good choice for his quartet because Fred could hang with that intensity.
+icecreamforcrowhurst Yeah, I used to feel the same way about Billy Harper, but I don't anymore. in fact a little while ago i went back and listened to Capra Black (Strats East), the album I used to hold in high esteem and found it a bit pretentious and tiresome.i used to buy all Billy Harper albums but I don't listen to them anymore. The lost is probably mine, but that's where I am at now.......
love the music between Fred and Art much, but i still think Denis Irwin,on bass and Billy Hart ,in drum is the best rhythm section both of them ever had.
Thanks, but are you sure? It doesn't seem to be the same song, unless there are two songs with an identical title, one being a standard and another one which Art Farmer performed here.
Fantastico fraseggiatore impareggiabile tecnicamente

Thanks! I could not remember the title :)
Wonderful posting, thanks.. Love the old VHS thing going on here. Nice of Art to wear his pj's for the show:)
quel bonheur cette video, Fred Hersch
a déjà une personnalité bien affirmée, merci pour cette diffusion !

Have you heard Fred's playing with Billy Harper in the late 70's? He's killin' it!

Well, Herch's solo and trio work are tremendous. Listen to his solo album "Open Book". He just keeps developing his style further and further..
Bassist name is misspelled. Bob *Bodley*.

25:00 Cookin'!
Strange seeing Herschel playing on an old upright piano. It would have sounded better on a good Steinway or Bosendorfer.
Does anybody know the title of the first piece?
+Ben Arnold «Almost Like Being In Love»
Thanks, but are you sure? It doesn't seem to be the same song, unless there are two songs with an identical title, one being a standard and another one which Art Farmer performed here.
+Ben Arnold No, you are right, I don't know what I was thinking. I know this song though, I'll think it over. The title is similar
+Ben Arnold "Namely You"
Thank you!
What rhythm changes is that?
