That final performance of Elvis's always always brings me to tears. It never fails. Even just the clip they showed, I was in tears in the theater. The idea that he thought he wouldn't leave an impact on the world or music just hurts. If only he knew.
Austin Butler nailed this performance. The first words out of my mom's mouth after she saw this movie was "He better get an award." The amount of research he must've done is mindboggling! I mean, even the If I Can Dream performance in the movie was so much like the actual one. His movements and voice...my jaw dropped when I first heard him speak.
    Loved this reaction!

Baz Luhrmann really did his research for this film & covered everything you needed to know about Elvis. I consider this film a masterpiece & I saw it many times, couldn't get enough. The script & cinematography was superb & so was Austin Butlers outstanding performance as he sold it as far as I was concerned & Tom Hanks portrayed the colonel to a tee with the great makeup & all. It'll win for best picture & Austin for best actor.

“When Lisa Marie was born, E.P. phoned me to say how he was so moved by the experience,” Nancy Sinatra remembered.
But she also explained how Elvis had shared the complexity of his emotions that day, saying he also told her “how he felt it was not fair that she would have such great blessings and the same child born in a ghetto that very night would suffer poverty and want, and God knows what else, perhaps all her life”.
“His heart was so full of love and pain that night,” she added.

He paid hospital bills for people, including Jackie Wilson who was another performer who did a lot of crazy moves. He bought houses for people. The scene in the movie on the Ferris wheel talking about buy cars is not that far off. He definitely bought hundreds of cars. If anyone did anything for him, he bought them something to say thank you. He never wanted to be alone. I can't remember exactly what happened, but they had more than one lawsuit about how Red and Sunny West treated people as his bodyguards. They wrote a nasty book that came out almost on the day he died. It sold millions and Red and Sonny refused to answer questions about it for over 20 years. He had known them since high school.

18:28 Apparently they'd originally offered him the lead male role in the 50s movie of 'Cat on a hot tin roof' with Elizabeth Taylor but the Colonel turned it down. Paul Newman still did a great job in the role but you're left wondering what Elvis's performance would've been like if he'd been given the chance - apparently he had some decent acting skills and could've been a good one if given the chance and some coaching.

Funny thing that happened during filming all of the costume montages. Many times Elvis would toss his guitar to one of the band members. You only see it once in the last montage and he is wearing black. They had to practice and sometimes he kind of threw in over his shoulder. Austin had not worn all of the costumes and some weighed about 25 lbs and had capes. The first one he tried with a cape, the cape caught on the guitar and Austin hit himself in the temple really hard and he said he was seeing stars and then Baz noticed he was bleeding. He says he still has a scar.

I love watching you do this interview. I have watched so many younger people reviewing various songs with Elvis doing them, especially, "If I Can Dream". It is so strange watching kids discover Elvis. I was born in 1946 so I remember him starting out and I remember his movies, the one I thought he did the best dramatic acting in is "Flaming Star". I read Sammy Davis, Jr's autobiography years ago, but recently was reminded that he and Elvis were good friends and that they were being consider for "The Defiant Ones" that went to Tony Curtis and Sidney Poirier, but the Parker refused to let him even consider it because the thought Elvis being handcuffed to a Black man wouldn't sell records. I have been studying a lot because I only knew Elvis from fan magazines at the beauty shop or in the newspaper. Where I was in Texas the main controversy had to do with the moves and not the racist things or I haven't found any in the Texas papers.

Great reaction!! So, the Colonel loved Elvis in the way a sociopath loves someone - he loved the money that Elvis could bring him. I don't believe he had a single shred of empathy for the man and especially didn't give a flying you know what about his creative desires as an artist. All he wanted was a steady check; the 'for sure; money. And Elvis, who knew nothing about finances and really could not care LESS about money, left all business decisions up to the Colonel. By the time he wanted out, it was way too late to escape, as far as he knew. All Elvis wanted to was to be able to take care of the people he loved and the people that worked for him, and to please his fans. He was happy with that, but when the Colonel's decisions started interfering with his desires to be a better actor or travel, for instance, the Colonel was able to use Elvis' desire to provide for those he loved against him, and also his fear of being unable to do that by cleaning him out financially. If Elvis had taken him to court, he would most probably have won - but he didn't know that and felt like he couldn't take the risk.
When Elvis died, the colonel's first reaction was to call up RCA and tell them to print more records.

She had a book of Elvis's favorite recipes. She said when Elvis hired her, he told her she would have a job until she didn't want to be there, and she was still there decades after he died. David asked if Elvis ever bought her anything and she had his huge ring with diamonds and emeralds. David asked if he bought her a Cadillac. 4:18 I think an old friend of his Sam Bell whom Baz Luhrmann personally interviewed and who still referred to Elvis as 'E.P.' said that no one there cared about race or colour because everyone was too focused on getting by day to day - that's how poor that area was. I think someone also said about that area that everyone was despised regardless of their race or skin tone by those outside the area because they were that poor. Still, Sam Bell also said that Elvis was allowed to come over to his house any time because he was always polite, and because of how rare even there it was to see a young white boy saying things like 'Yes Sir' when visiting an African-American family.
Either way even living in the government housing project when the family moved to Memphis was a step up.

In the 1950s Black artists couldn't get played except on black stations, but if other people recorded their music they would get royalties and paid for the use and then get a royalty every time it was played. Little Richard believed he had been the king of rock and roll, but could not get played and when Elvis covered "Tutti Fruitti" he got money. He considered Elvis a friend and so did BB King. There is an interview done in probably the 1990s with one of Elvis' childhood friends when he lived in the black community. If you search "Sam Bell, Elvis Presley". There are later interviews with Baz Lurhman and then Sam Bell died in 2020. Sam's older bro, worked at the theater in Tupelo. Sam and the his black friends would sneak in on the black side and Elvis on the white. After the movie started Elvis would move over the barrier. The owner finally told them he knew what they were doing, but since they sat on the steps and didn't use a seat it was okay.

It makes it sound like he only had him working 6 weeks at the hotel and 15 days, but he worked him year round. He only got credit at that hotel and only while Elvis was there, so he had to keep him working because when Elvis was not at the hotel he had to pay his debts off. They believe at one time he owe 30 mil. Elvis made 21 movies in 7 years and during that time he was not allowed to tour. When they first started out, at one time in Florida he had Elvis do 21 shows in 9 days at 7 different cities.

This Elvis movie is NOT a biopic because although it is sold as a movie about the relation between Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, and Elvis it also touches on his personal life. And that is where a lot is wrong because it is totally biased in favor of his EX wife Priscilla Beaulieu who, unfortunately, is becoming more and more known as Elvis' wife, not the ex, which can make new fans assume that she is his widow. It might sound great to many that Priscilla gave the movie her blessing. But the fact remains that she has changed a lot of Elvis history to suit her story. I'm sure he loved her for some of the time they knew each other, but in reality, she barely spent any time alone with him. They met in September 1959 in Germany and he returned to the US in March of 1960. Then they did not have any contact until 1962, the year of her first visit to him in Memphis, from where they (which included his entire entourage) traveled to Las Vegas. She was 17 then (born May 24, 1945). In December she visited again, for Christmas. In 1963 she first moved in with Elvis' father Vernon and stepmother Dee, but after a while she moved into the main house. During these years, Elvis was away from Memphis a lot, making 3 movies a year in Hollywood or locations such as Hawaii. And during all these years he was also still seeing other women. Priscilla herself said multiple times they were hardly ever alone. According to Priscilla, Elvis had promised to marry her when she was 21. But as her birthday had come and gone and her 22nd birthday was approaching and Elvis still had not kept his word, Priscilla, her parents and the colonel (Tom Parker) visited Elvis on a movie set. Nobody knows what really happened there, except that some time during that visit, Elvis had a mysterious fall in the bathroom. All of a sudden everything escalated and a quick wedding ceremony was arranged on May 1, 1967 (23 days before Priscilla's 22nd birthday) in Las Vegas. The strange thing about that was not just the timing, but also that many people who were close to Elvis were contacted by Parker's people to not attend the wedding. The whole ceremony took just a few minutes and afterwards they were ushered into a room for a press conference. Priscilla soon became pregnant, but halfway through her pregnancy, Elvis already wanted to divorce her. 9 months after the wedding, daughter Lisa Marie was born, after which there was almost no physical relationship between Elvis and Priscilla. By then the 1968 Comeback Special had given a new impulse to his career and from 1969 on he was away from Memphis touring the US for an average of 200 days a year. Both Elvis and Priscilla had affairs during their short marriage. They separated in February of 1972 when Priscilla and Lisa moved to California and Elvis remained in Memphis. He filed for divorce on his 38th birthday, January 8, 1973. The divorce was finalized in October of 1973. Priscilla rejected the name Presley and returned to her maiden name Beaulieu after the divorce, stating she wanted to be her own person. She even started a business under that name. But after Elvis died, she soon changed her name to Beaulieu-Presley and some time after that she dropped her maiden name and started calling herself Presley again. She had several relationships after her divorce. In 1984 she met Marco Garibaldi with whom she had a relationship for 21 years. They separated in 2006. Together they had a son, Navarone, in 1987. She never married Garibaldi, although she had a much longer relationship with him than she'd had with Elvis, possibly because she wanted to hang on to the Presley name. Interesting detail is that Elvis did not mention Priscilla at all in his will; not even as guardian of his only child, Lisa Marie. Elvis' cousin Billy Smith and his wife Jo have already said that so many things are not right as far as things concerning Priscilla are concerned. Linda Thompson is right: i.postimg.cc/hjYL9bkt/linda-thompson.jpg and Elvis' bassist from the TCB band, Jerry Scheff, doesn't hold back and tells it like it is: i.postimg.cc/FK2GdjDc/Jerry-Scheff-Elvis-movie-comment.jpg.
Elvis was born in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. He always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. But he was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (czcams.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/video.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

At the time they met, he had a girlfriend back home, Anita Wood, who was 2 years younger than he was. His first girlfriends were 3 years younger than him, while he himself was still a teenager. Actress Natalie Wood, whom he dated a few times when he first came to Hollywood, was also just 3 years younger than he was. Judy Spreckles and Pat Sheehan were 4 years OLDER than he was. Yvonne Lime 3 months younger than he was. Ann-Margret was 6 years younger than he was, but both were in their twenties when they dated. To answer your questions about the colonel; He did not show much love to him at all. He only was interested in the money. He showed no emotion at his funeral & came dressed improper. I heard he implied that it will be like Elvis never left. He would keep working and keeping selling all his records and merchandise just like when he was away in the army for 2 years.
Funny thing is Elvis did not need him to do that. He only wanted a share of the income. Colonel has not been a part of Elvis estate for years and it’s just as strong without him!!

So enjoyed your reaction and appreciate YOU!!💜
I prayed the film would take Col Tom to task & it did indeed. My only issue is it might leave viewers believing he suffered an extended destitute life after Elvis passed. In fact, enjoyed a very prosperous career repping other successful acts based on lies he built yet again on Elvis’ back. And no, Col Tom, it was not his love for us that killed him. It was you. It was your selfishness. It was your greed. It was YOU, Col Tom. Period.
My husband was so incredibly lucky to see Elvis live. There are times in the film it is hard to tell what is actual footage & what is Austin Butler. TBH, I’d hoped Ansel Elgort would land the role. It’s my understanding he was in the final 3; clearly Baz got it right😉😊
I feel the movie stays very close to legit given Baz Luhrmann’s frenetic style of directing- which I personally enjoy. He did a wonderful job w the mashup of karate, gospel, whorehouse dancers, the comeback special, & If I Can Dream. MASTERFUL would be a word & I grin like a Cheshire Cat ea time I watch it lol
Even though I was young & not a big Elvis fan at the time- I can still tell you exactly where I was when I heard the news he’d passed. Just one of those kind of moments😔
HIGHLY recommend you now watch/react to the actual live performance of If I Can Dream as well as the minidoc (14mins) ‘Elvis and the Black Community: That Echo Will Never Die’. You will enjoy both and learn much about Elvis as a person and a performer!

Regarding Elvis's Mom - because she lost a child, I think she was worried that something bad would happy to Elvis. Also, because women in that era had less freedom and fewer opportunities, sometimes moms had a tendency to be superfocused on their children's lives. That could be both good and bad for the children.

3:57 They couldn't afford a coffin so they had to bury Jesse in a shoebox. Elvis installed a plaque to him in Graceland. Their middle names matched even if their first names didn't - Elvis Aaron Presley and Jesse Garon Presley. Stories going around of course that when he was a child Elvis would talk to Jesse's grave when he was upset because it calmed him down, and that in the Vegas years people claimed they heard him talking as if he was having a conversation with Jesse and that he genuinely believed that he could hear Jesse's voice in his head (considering what he was on I guess it's not unbelievable that he'd be hallucinating things like that). Gladys Presley was definitely way too clingy with Elvis but I guess if a woman gives birth to a stillborn twin before giving birth to a living twin.......she's always going to worry

A detail I had to research after seeing the movie was the spelling of 'Aron' on Elvis's draft notice because everywhere else it is Aaron. Apparently, Elvis was named after Jesse; they just removed the 'G'. But later on, as Elvis became more religious, he preferred the more traditional bible version of the name and so that's what was used. I don't recall if he was still technically 'Aron' or if they ever went through the legal process to change it but Vernon put on his grave the way Elvis wanted it spelled regardless of legality. I thought that was a pretty cool detail in the movie.

Yes he was "as good as Brando" in GOOD Roles. I loved Flaming Star. But nobody went to see his dramatic roles if he wasn't performing songs. So they just cranked out cheesy movies that were vehicles for musical performances, which were not great either. Its like the movies we're lacking because it was just a way to show songs and the music numbers were lacking because they were just little interruption in the movie and not given much care. But he was funny. He really understood how to do drama and comedy. And there's was ALWAYS fighting in his movie. He could've been a great dramatic or Action star if studios didn't insist that he had to sing.
However the earlier ones like Jailhouse Rock and King Creole, before he went into the army, were great.
