Our Trans Elders Deserve Better

When Lisa Oakley, a 68-year-old transgender woman and US Army veteran, needed around-the-clock care due to complications from diabetes, Lisa and her social worker, Cori Martin-Crawford started looking for a long-term care facility where she could live the rest of her years. There was only one choice in Lisa's eyes: Sandrock Ridge Care and Rehab, the only option available in Craig, Colorado, her home of more than 30 years.
However, Sandrock Ridge turned Lisa away because she still had "her boy parts" and wanted to put her in a room with a man, which she refused. She was also turned away from several dozen facilities in the state. Several months later, after her social worker and a network of advocates worked tirelessly to find a facility, Lisa was finally admitted to a skilled nursing facility in Grand Junction, more than 2 hours away from her home in Craig.
Although Lisa's immediate needs are met, she laments that she may never see her home or friends again. Lisa could not stay in her community, but she wants to tell her story in hopes that no other transgender senior will have to go through what she went through.

Thank you so very much for sharing your story about being able to live the quality of life like everyone else. . . You ae indeed a person who has much to give to society. Lisa is not alone. Lisa needs to be treated like everyone else. Yes indeed, I can relate to Lisa's story. . .

My heart goes out to all of the people who found this, felt empathy for Lisa and can somehow relate to her story. I know I can and it hurts.
