  • The sermon introduction is more important now than historically it has ever been. In the past, uninterested listeners had little to do when sitting through a sermon they didn’t care to listen to. Today, however, with the proliferation of smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices, an unengaged listener can happily surf the web, be on social media, play video games, get caught up on their reading, and a thousand other things, all while the preacher delivers the sermon just a few feet away. What can we do to help ensure that their sermons are, in the words of Duane Litfin, “the most interesting thing going on in the room?”

    7. Before preaching, spend time with God for help, forgiveness and peace in mind, which gives boldness and confidence during preaching.

Without the Spirit of God, His empowerment and anointing, man's words are just that. I do believe that the Spirit is the only one who can teach and guide us, in preparation and exhortation, that will lead a congregation to the truth, and the will of God for that fellowship/church. Seek God first, in humbleness and weakness of self, and the words that are meant to be said will come. No formula or bullet/point list will ever replace the living Word in full submission. That is the beginning of success; understanding our limitations and letting Jesus work through us by His Spirit. Fully yielding, in humble submissiveness, is something God will use for His Glory and pleasure.

That is also my stand, I always look to the Holy Spirit as the sole effective teacher. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is far different from a man's knowledge.

Yes, but there is a danger. What you said sounds great. Of course we need the Holy Spirit and nobody can teach like Him but we are responsible to always be prepared and try the best on or own. I come from a penthecostal environment, where people are constantly mentioning the autority of the Holy Spirit and the fac that He teaches best. This being given, some of them allmost never prepare, preach on the same text, the same things over and over again, and the most serious and delicate problem is the following: from 100 people saying that the Holy Spirit is leading them you get 101 different doctrines and I am sure that the Holy Spirit doesn't change his mind from one to another

    • @royandel-ong6414
      @royandel-ong6414 Před 2 lety +1

What!! There is danger in trusting God and Holy Spirit? Let us be reminded John 15:5 apart from God we can do nothing. The Spirit of God is designed to guide us. You may and can but you will only be like a noisy gong and
Clanging cymbal apart from the HS

    Great!
One more tip, and this is ultimate!
Take time to pray in private before your preaching, the Holy Spirit will just pin your audience to the message and carry all their attention. I've read about people who did it that way, even Jesus as we see in the Bible. I've tried it myself and it works!

I once ask my deacon yrs ago “what should preach this Sunday ?” His answer changed my life as a preacher! He said “ preach Christ! “ 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 (ESV)
17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

    The Fallen Minister’s Lamentation:
“I left when my prayers were meaningless literary productions, when hymns only evoked a comfortable nostalgia, when my sermons could not say what I really felt, when the Bible simply became obtuse literature, when missions became free vacations for the favored few, when Jesus became merely a man, and finally, when God died on my lips. The truth then was undeniable; *I didn’t fail it, it failed me.”*

Luke 14:33 "So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple."
Luke 12:33-34 "[33] Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
[34] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
Matthew 6:19-21 "[19] Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
[20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
[21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
Matthew 6:24-34 "[24] No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
[25] Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
[26] Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
[27] Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
[28] And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
[29] And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
[30] Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
[31] Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
[32] (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
[33] But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
[34] Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."
Matthew 28:19-20 "[19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
[20],Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
John 14:15 "If ye love me, keep my commandments."
John 14:21, 23-24 "[21] He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
[23] Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
[24] He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me."
John 6:27 "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed."
We must obey Jesus, as Christians. Stop working for money, for the food and drink that perishes! Did Jesus work for money? Did Paul? Did Peter? Did John? No, and for those that had done it, like Peter, they left all and followed Jesus. We *need* to do this too.
Matthew 7:21 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."
Matthew 6:24 "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
We have to serve God to do His will. We cannot enter Heaven without doing His will. We cannot serve Him and do His will if we also serve mammon, or money. Quit your job and work for God! He *commands* us to do this! Our eternal destination depends greatly on this one simple thing!

Absolutely good advice. I've often opened with an attention drawing question. A recent one I recall using was, "Really bad things keep happening in my life! Is God angry with me?" And another was, "Is it a sin to enjoy sex?" That one paved the way to expound the beauty of God's heart toward us, which leads to His will for us, which flowed nicely into His plan of redemption (from Hosea). Thumbs up, keep the good content coming.

you are right today I believe there is more & more need for attention getting sermons that drive the point home in a possible shorter time say 10 mts maximum compared to the earlier days (pre Covid) when sitting in the building you could even spend an hour listening to a sermon because in a full church you had more objects to be distracted BUT now sitting in an online church service at home it is hard to sit through a 30 or 40 minute message and difficult to go through a normal 90 minute service! that is my personal opinion only.

    1) Study the Bible to know God better & to draw closer to Him; NOT to get points and ideas to preach. Get the relationship; you will get the message. Messages preached from what God has been dealing with you about comes off as fresh off the table--not canned. 2) Prayer, prayer, prayer. Alaister Begg says he prays four hours for every one hour he studies. No prayer=no relationship. I can honestly tell when a preacher is backed with prayer vs. just "good preaching;" there is a life that comes into a sermon that isn't there from pirating the best out of others' sermons etc. In conclusion, spending time in the Bible to commune with God and hear from Him AND prayer = great preaching. Eh, sorry, this isn't exactly "how to open" but if you don't do these two things it will matter little how catchy your opening is. Everything he says about openings is spot on and I can't add anything to that

Some Ministers preach Sunday sermons and have done very little study all week, the poor underlings in the pew on Sunday must listen to sermon produce on a Friday night or Saturday night rush, lacking no thought, contrast, biblical facts, prayer, meditation, or sweat by the Minister. One day that Minister will have to give an account to God for his lack of sermonic preparation.

WOW! so if I start with the scriptures than I have to use an "attention" grabbing portion?? I would think if I get up and start with the scripture and they immediately tune out, maybe their there for the wrong reason.

Using Gods preserved Word always has power. It is a Sword. Most people don't even consider that up until about 50years ago everyone used a Bible that they believed were the very words of God translated by sinful men through the power of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was given Isaiah to read in the temple it was written 600 years before he was born and was not an original manuscript, but a copy of a copy of a copy of a...Today preachers read from a book that contains GODS WORDS but aren't Gods preserved Word and often are members if the Bible of the month club. The power of a sermon is in the delivery of Gods Word, not God's paraphrased book. The church was never in such a mess until a bunch of unsaved, liberal scholars got together in secret and planned a revision of the Holy Bible, commonly known as the Authorized King James Bible. The manuscripts used were rejected by scholars and were known to be gnostic in origin from Alexandria, Egypt, a place known in the Bible as wicked. They claimed to be older manuscripts but just because something is older doesn't make it more reliable. They were discovered and were owned by the Roman Catholic Church who killed over 50 million Christians during the dark ages because they loved Jesus more than Roman Catholic paganized dogma. Read "the trail of blood " by J.M.Carrol. There is a Bible e that can be trusted, and has been responsible for more souls saved, churches built and revival meetings, by a man of God, and is God's inspired and preserved Word, The Authorized King James Bible.
There are one true God and many false gods.
One true Church and many false churches.
One true Holy Bible and many false (per)versions.
Jesus is the living, perfect Word of God and the Bible is the written perfect Word of God. The Bible is the final authority for all matters of life, faith and practice. Mine is perfect, infallible, incompatible, indestructible, as promised by God (1 Peter 1:20-25) and I trust that God can not lie. I preach from God's Word the Holy Bible.

Maybe tonight I will start off with a joke about the guy who told me I should try to get a congregation’s attention with a joke and statistics instead of exposition the word of God. It is the preacher’s position to preach the word of God and expound upon it.
What you are saying sounds like the opening of a Joel Osteen “sermon”. He grabs their attention then leaves out the Bible.
If people want to spend their time on their phone or tablet then that’s on them. As long as there is one soul in the room that came to listen then preach on.

The more you read the whole Bible from cover to cover, the less sermons you need to hear. The Spirit of Truth is your teacher who will guide you into all truth and open your understanding that you may understand the scriptures and grow thereby.1Pe2:2

Delia Rodriquez wow, maybe you need to read Romans 10 again, faith cometh by HEARING and HEARING by the word of God. Notice it says hearing not reading. You gotta have preaching. And 1 Peter 2:2 doesn't mean stop listening to preaching it means you start in milk like babies and you grow spiritually and eventually move up into eating meat. But just because you become an adult does that mean you quit eating? Listening to preaching feeds your soul, you quit listening then you'll starve and die.

It's good to be both edified and relational. Prophetic and teachable. God blesses us with human beings to show us what it means to be human flawed and available for his use. We must forsake not the assembly of ourselves together exhorting one another. Even as the comforter comforts us.

Or just use the Word of God that the Lord of glory and all creation wrote to us, instead of tacky jokes and inaccurate statistics and foolish gimmicks. Of course people will tune out because they don't love God and are in their flesh. What a sad and terrible tragedy to see that preaching can be reduced to this.

Yes people do not love God and are in their flesh. It is our job as ministers to make them hear. To hopefully say something that will open their eyes to the truth. I cant do that if all the lost people are not paying attention. So of i have to use humor to get their attention so that they receive a word that might keep them out of hell I will. I am not content preaching a boring sermon and shrugging my shoulders when the lost dont pay attention and go to hell.
Steven Lawson says holy is NOT boring. U can joke and be holy. U can have fun and be holy. Thinking that you must be pious in order to be holy is phariseeic. I'll do whatever it takes to reach the lost. And I dont mean preaching an easy believism gospel. I mean preaching the hard gospel truth in a way that the sinner WANTS to listen

Sermons now are more important than they've ever been? I would disagree. The body of Christ grows only by God's method, and that is through every single part of the body doing its work. Sermons are delivered by one member of the body while every other member does nothing. But God did not design church growth that way, and we wonder why we're not growing at all. In the past, a lot of people went to church because society saw that as good. Now that societal approval of churchgoing has vanished, we have seen a lot of members leave, never knowing what their part was in the body of Christ, and never exercising their gifts. We're not going to grow the body of Christ with multitudes of sermons, yet every church continues to pump them in large quantities while wondering why doing more of the same does not work.

The Holy Spirit is more than enough. No fluff needed.
I dare pastors to invite the Holy Spirit into their services from now on. We need spirit filled Apostles, Pastors, Trachers, Evangelists and Prophets.
