90's U2 was their best phase for me personally, Achtung Baby was an incredible album to grow up with in high school, it is still a masterpiece today, as well as many songs from Zooropa, a great time to be alive and young
It definitely was. And that phase opened for us the doors for a lot of great music that came after them, from other bands. And gave us also the means and the right to criticize U2 when they lost their devotion to art and music
When Bono and U2 were cool. When they ruled the world. When they did what they wanted and didn't worry about the public perception. When they led, and everyone else followed.
I agree Zoo TV, Zooropa and this period was U2 at their best. It was my first concert and no other show from them or anybody else has lived up to it since. I think you must appreciate however that because it was so kitsch, so unique, so stamped in that particular time - technologically, politically, socially that if they tried to repeat it or adopt the same personas on a subsequent tour it would not have been received well. McPhisto was great fun, but he was a character. As a band they couldn't continue to tour as "characters". By its nature, the tour was a once off. It was great though.
This whole period was a reaction to negative public perception. He outlines the whole thing in this interview. People criticized them for being uncool and pretentious in the 80s when they actually didn't care about public perception. They're pretending to be cool here.
I've always preferred the obnoxious, cocky, arrogant Bono over the one we've gotten the last 10 or 15 years. I think he's best and U2 is best when they truly don't give a fuck and just be obnoxious, like Zootv and the even the popmart day's. Pure gold.
Real recognize real. What Bono is saying is still very relevant to this day. A class act and milestone ground breaker doing things way ahead of his time. It will take 50 to 100 years for people to actually recognize what they did here. And lastly if Frank Sinatra bigs you up, you’re legit. Nothing will take that away.
i absolutely love the fact that he dedicates all of his concerts and songs to world problems that self-centered americans don't care enough about. it's truly amazing. i just went to one in seattle for his 360 tour 3 days ago and it was incredible. before every song, he would show something in the world and tie it in to his songs. he really is an amazing man.
This was back when we could not get enough of Bono/U2, now we bitch and complain when we get a free album on our iphone. Times have changed - I miss the old 80's and 90's swagger. I guess it's tough to stay on top for more than two decades so they're always champs for that, but wow have things become boring post POP.
This was U2 at their most versatile. 1:39 "Numb" - a song in which the lyrics are spoken by the lead guitarist 2:44 Doing a live cross during their concerts to war-torn Sarajevo 4:29 Singing a duet with Frank Sinatra Show me a band with that kind of range.
Bono with cutler end gross...My favorite glasses...Now in my collection..I like times zoo tv zooropa... Top for me... Beautiful...Good memories forever
Ciao this is really top glasses!!...me too in my collection 2 glasses (One pair for everyday😉) e 2 glasses the fly replica glasses zoo tv Zooropa tour...cutler is rare 🎶🎵
What a band they were at that time, their run of 6 albums from War through to Zooropa rivals any other band. Hopefully in years to come people will remember how great they were at their peak, rather than focusing on their tax affairs or invading people's iphones...
He developed the stage persona of The Fly during this period and he's in character during the interview. The sad thing is that he never really snapped out of it.
I think you've missed the point a bit though. The Fly was meant to allow Bono to be himself more than he ever was before. The over-sincere and modest Bono of the 80's was just one side of him that was him doing his best to react to all of the fame in what way he thought best. When he realized people started hating him for it, he said "fuck it then, you want a rock star? You've got it", and that's what he did. To say he never snapped out of it should actually apply to pre-Fly Bono.
Sad to see Bono smoking in that interview, that was already early 90's. I saw him smoking in the early 80's too, so bad for the vocals, as well as everything else. Willie Nelson may smoke weed, but it's not tobacco, and he just turned 80! I'm one of your biggest fans Bono, please quit smoking!!Your family will thank you!!
+Terry O It wouldn't surprise me if Bono smokes only during interviews. He's performing here, just like he performs on stage. That's not a criticism - it just means he's projecting an image.
As a fan I always worried he would ruin his good voice, but now I'm just concerned for his health. He looks more fragile as the years go by, smoking certainly does not help...
@David Os No band in this world, as small it could be, will make a show or a record for free. Last week I was in a bar with an unknown band for $20. We are all in it (life) for money, comfort and exploitation.
they missed the part of the interview where Bono quotes a few very poignant comments about the history of U2: "... very materialistically oriented, you know, and that is not what the U2 is about. You know, we are not about the glitz and the glamour.... the money.... and the fame and the power, and the touring.... and the money.... well maybe we are about that a little bit, but... well, I guess that is what we are about."
Actually that wasn’t Bono. It was Ben Stiller parodying Bono lol. Here is the quote at the 2 minute, 17 second mark: czcams.com/video/N3ciLzLMryg/video.htmlsi=rYYs9kzhhtKgonzt
@PeachFuzzWhaleEgg Actually its quite easy to deny. Vanian looked like the muted spawn of Dracula and a gay butler who looks nothing like The Fly character. And its not 'Bono's' look. The Fly was a composite parody of the rock star in general. Check out From the Sky Down. He look Lou Reed's glasses, Jim Morrison's pants and Elvis' haircut.
U2 was the shit, when they didn't took themselves seriously and acted like they are: rockstars, instead of telling everyone how they should live their lives.
Even their 2000 album was bad? Also, Vertigo is an amazing song. Never listened to their 2009 album. Songs of Innocence is okay. I didn't mind having it pre-loaded onto my iTunes. I don't get why people bitch about it.
I completely agree. Their last good album was Pop. Not a really well planned tour, but the album was good and different. Now they mass produce the same sound since All You Can't Leave Behind. They're not imaginative anymore.
OK I hear you! By the way Zooropa only has maybe 5 songs I like. But Pop you have to listen to and let it grow on you. That's kind of how all U2 albums have been, because they changed their sound so much. I just don't think they have altered their sound since 2000. I love all of their 80's albums. I remember listening to The Unforgettable Fire and just thinking wow this is interesting, but unsure if I liked it, but the sound the singing kept me coming back for more, and I just love that album. Nice talking to you Mickey Deez, you take care.
Bono is pretending to smoke that cigarette. When he finally takes a drag he clearly does not inhale. The cigarette is a prop. Bono thinks it makes him look cool.
90's U2 was their best phase for me personally, Achtung Baby was an incredible album to grow up with in high school, it is still a masterpiece today, as well as many songs from Zooropa, a great time to be alive and young
You hit it right on the head.
Yes.
It definitely was. And that phase opened for us the doors for a lot of great music that came after them, from other bands. And gave us also the means and the right to criticize U2 when they lost their devotion to art and music

@Gruagach. Iron Shoes What a rambling mess of a comment.
@@YourLoyalDeserter such a shame they didn’t explain it as succinctly when they did popmart
yes this is the bono i miss, such a rock star back then..
He was acting a rock star, but i'm with you anyways.
Name me another frontman as eloquent. He's the best songwriter, best singer, poet and orator. Never be another..
Best singer? There is Elvis and Sinatra.
Poet? There is Bob Dylan, nick cave Leonhard cohen and Morrissey
@@Wakeupdream Bono's voice is my favourite 1987-1994 however Bono himself would probably say Sinatra hahaha
Jon Bon Jovi!
Love Bono but Shane Macgowan is a far better lyricist
Wtf? Roger Waters.
A era that's gone with the static and the radio.
Pun intended?

Bono has always been effortlessly cool...whether he knows it or not. He's also one of the very very few who makes smoking look kind of hot...kind of.
I love Bono without his glasses. 90's Bono was soooo hot!
Bono is hot!
Bono is the mate that phones you drunk and talks shit for hours
I like what he said in the beginning. Use ur instinct first and your intellect second.
So different from 92-93. Just one year...chasm of progression
Works now. Thanks for uploading.

Me fascina Bono en la época del Achtung Baby!!!!! Me emboba como nadie.... :)

What music is that in the back ground at the beginning
BONO= COOL MAN
lol is that Edge on the camera at 3:50?
This was U2's peak, when they were beyond fucking awesome, before they got too fucked up over politics.
What? Ever heard War (1983)?
Are you kidding?! They've always been about politics and social justice....
Joshua tree era was the peak
Where do you go when you’re at the top?..what do you do when life ends?..at least Bono lives

He looks a bit like Falco...his gestures, his hairstyle and how he's behaving...cool and a little touch of arrogance but I like it👍
Kerstin Sommer yeah I wish this arrogant bono would come back
I see a lot of Trent Reznor too, it’s funny. The mannerisms, the nose, the way they move and speak…similar.
