    This band is unique in the world. I love the young Bono finding his feet and the now 2012 mature Bono still standing strong and sure. The Edge always elavates and Larry and Adam keeep the energy at a concert or a recording just where you think God enters. Bless this group who have received and given many blessings in return. 30 years in........

    MY LETTER TO U2-1987
    I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
    I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
    I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
    Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!
    All the Best!
    Gary Lagstrom

    Gosh the eighties really were a great hair period for men and a truly horrible one for women's hair.

      I agree! Achtung baby was good rather than great for my ears. Even though everyone thinks its their best album. All of their 80s albums excite me more than achtung baby

    bono is young and being somewhat hypercritical here. he adopted a mega star persona for Zoo tv, and contrived or not, became a household name. that being said, the JTree was a magical album, and deserved it's phenomenal sales success. Couldn't escape U2 in the late 80s: radio, MTV, malls, restaurants, etc.

    • @Studio2770
      @Studio2770 Před 6 lety +3

      He is somewhat. When they got some flak for Rattle and Hum, I think they felt they needed to reevaluate themselves. I think they didn't want to seem like mega stars but the critics or whoever said they were going for what so they decided to give it to them, in overload.

    • @the_real_littlepinkhousefly
      @the_real_littlepinkhousefly Před 5 lety +8

      The Zoo TV persona was themselves poking fun at themselves. They knew they were inextricably stuck in the mega-band machine, so decided to explore what that might look like to just go with it. Personally, I never got used to the change after Joshua Tree, and though I still adore U2, it's more now for who they are as people and for the amazing feat of surviving being a mega-band than for the music since the 80s. (I do like some of it, but it just doesn't spark me the same way the 80s stuff did. And that's just me, clearly there are loads of other people who still love the music. I&E and E+I were decent enough albums. But I guess my heart is stuck in the 80s where U2 is concerned.)

    "I often think of those awful rock and roll bands that come on stage in their shiny trousers and bear their chests to everybody, we don't feel like that, we don't feel like a megaband..." lol He basically just described himself during the ZOOTV era. They must have looked at old interviews like this one when they were trying to forge a new identity for themselves during the early nineties.

    • @stevehall1218
      @stevehall1218 Před 5 lety

      Agreed, especially in this day and age. At first, they made their music during the tour as the record companies kept the majority of the profit of album sales. Artists made $1 per album sold in the '70s and '80s. Then file-sharing started which decreased album sales so the record companies were able to get their hands on the tour revenue. Because of this, ticket prices went from $30 to $100+. We haven't seen a real rock band emerge in years. We only have leftovers of groups who were able to survive. Country music did ok though it is not what I listen to. I guess no one sees rock music as a viable career path. I laugh when I hear an old live song where the singer says, "Rock and roll will never die."
