    Hey, just a few minutes in-I already like video, but if you're still reading these, don't beat yourself up too much "non-productive" time. Sometimes the diversions, leisures, silence, music, mindless consumption, and other "waste-of-time" activities are just as important for growth and creativity in ways that surprise you. Keep a balance.

    Thank you for your effort. Best practical in-depth video on the subject, especially the technique of organising the Client / Project.
    A question came up when you said you run it 24/7. I didn't see you mention 'eating'. We all have to eat. The dilemma is that it is a necessity [Productive] and on the other hand it can also be social or if we take too long it can be a time waster [No value].
    Do you include meal times, and if so, what category would you put it under? Thank you.

    • @LocalizationAcademy
      @LocalizationAcademy  Před 4 lety +1

      hi Hak and sorry for the late reply. Thanks a lot for your feedback!
      I confirm I do eat, yes :) I've been always watching stuff while eating, so I put that under "watching BS" which is certainly [No value]. In order to spend that time better, I tried to at least watch more educational videos while eating. When I eat at work in the morning, I do emails, so that's obviously [Productive]. When it's social eating, it's a relationship thing. So for me, eating is always a "background" activity and I track what I do primarily (while eating). If you really do JUST eat, you enjoy every piece of your meal and it's an important break in your day, just track it like that. The definition of what is [No value] and what is [Productive] is up to you. Important is that if you look at your numbers, you can find ways to optimize your life if you feel like you don't have time to do X.
      You may want to look at this video czcams.com/video/sxYpt97nQNU/video.html where I shared my new way of structuring the tasks in Toggl. A better example of what you were pointing out with "eating", is in my case "hygiene". I could be listening to a podcast while doing that in order to be more "productive", but I don't. I just track it as "hygiene" which to me is part of the "Survival" project. That is something I just have to do to survive, so it's important for the Future. When I look at my report, there are definitely other tasks I should eliminate first, so I'm definitely going to keep showering :) this is where it really helps to track 24/7 because you might be trying to cut down small things, while in reality, your biggest time waste may be somewhere else (it adds up over the week...)

    • @LocalizationAcademy
      @LocalizationAcademy  Před 4 lety +1

      OK, that video is not very good, just checked it. I improved the structure in Toggl so that it's clear what is Joy, Future or both... or No value. But the general concept of Joy and Future is good, it might help you.

    • @LocalizationAcademy
      @LocalizationAcademy  Před 4 lety

      hey there, I was just going to reply to your last (long) comment and I see that it's not here. I'll reply anyway and hope you'll still see it.
      "Joy" for me is something that gives me happiness while doing it. It's about the feeling it brings you at that moment and is more about the "emotional" benefits of life. Compared to things that are purely about "Future" which means I don't enjoy doing them that much, but they're important for my future (for many their job as an example). The goal is of course to do things that bring BOTH Joy + Future - that for me is for example content creation and it's my goal to turn it into something more than a hobby. Everyone should make a living of what they really enjoy and the world would be a better place :) PS: while I do enjoy watching series and movies, that still falls under No value.
      Re multi-tasking: you can not run 2 timers at once, but you can manually add tasks with overlapping times, Toggl doesn't check that at all. So when you stop tracking task A, you can add task B for the same time interval. Alternatively, you could set up a category (project/client) that would represent both tasks, if you do them often.
      HOWEVER - I'm a strong opponent of multi-tasking and I think it's a stupid thing and all the HR people who ask for this on job posting are useless. In your example of waiting, it's not multi-tasking. Waiting doesn't require any effort, so you're practically doing just one thing (as you should). To track it or not - to stop and start a new timer takes a few taps, it's not much. If it still seems like too much, keep the "family" one running and if during the waiting you actually get to do some other important task worth tracking, you can fix it after you get home (reduce the time on family, add the time you did doing the other thing). In my case of gym/podcast - I don't train very aggressively, more like a recovery, so for me it's been a "background activity". Thus I was tracking the primary task I was focusing on (let's say podcast). But recently I do put more focus into training, so I just track workout as my main thing. Even though I may listen to a podcast, but now the listening is background thing.
      You wouldn't learn to program while doing your taxes. You'd need to focus 100% on one thing. Then why wouldn't other tasks in your life get 100% of your focus? ALWAYS focus just on one thing and give it your full attention, you'll be more productive and less prone to errors. I only "multi-task" when one task is completely on auto-pilot and doesn't require my mental power. So, if you think you need to track 2 activities at the same time, there's a way to do it, but I'd strongly encourage you to do just ONE thing at a time and give it your 100% brain power.
      I'm happy that this video could help you with your new life! But please, take it easy with the mindset of trying to make up for a lost time. Rest is important and you won't get any more productive if you're going to be stressed about your numbers or trying to "catch up with the rest of the world". If you really are tracking and optimizing your time and doing what's important for you, then you're already better than 90% of the planet. You'll win the long game. I watch a lot of Gary Vee but can't find a video where he talks about the perspective of time, at least I found this article www.garyvaynerchuk.com/all-you-have-is-time-%E2%8C%9B%EF%B8%8F%E2%8C%9B%EF%B8%8F%E2%8C%9B%EF%B8%8F/. Take care and thanks for the nice comments! I feel like finally someone got the "Stop wasting your life" part of the video :)

    Very informative video Andrej! thanks for showing how to use TOGGL for personal time tracking. Most of the other videos were in team's context. Ture that measurement is everything and the first important step to cause real changes. I like the way you structured your activities and projects. Wondering how to best account your time whilte multitasking- running and listening to audiobook gets logged as 2 separate activities? Health and learning? Cheers!

    • @LocalizationAcademy
      @LocalizationAcademy  Před 4 lety

      Hey! Thanks for your comment and sorry for the late reply. Re multitasking: first of all, I try to NOT multitask and just focus on doing one thing right. When I did a similar thing as you said (gym + podcast in my case), I logged the thing which mostly occupied my "single-core" mind, leaving the "background" activity outside of Toggl. So if I'm really focusing on a good workout and the podcast is just background noise, I'd log it as health. If you can really pay attention to an audiobook while running, then sure - try to log it twice. It's extra work, but your summed time in reports will be a better representation of how you spend time. As a separate suggestion, explore how it is to just run and focus on running... and then just learn without doing anything else :)

      Hey Dawn, sorry for the late reply, I didn't get any notification :| I don't use the Chrome extension, sorry I can't help you. I just have the web app (toggl.com) open constantly in my Chrome + mobile app when I'm away from the computer. If you want to set a certain time for a task, maybe you can look into some pomodoro technique apps where there's a limit. I don't use pomodoro. When I get lost in a task and forget time, it's usually a good sign that I'm in the zone :) For creative tasks or complex problems, I don't how it would work with a time limit... but that's just me.

    • @dawnrisk4849
      @dawnrisk4849 Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Andrej, no worries I got it figured out! I understand what you are saying about the timer. I'm experimenting with it, but so far am finding it helpful to use on those routine monotonous tasks that are difficult to complete or even to start, as that's where I am most easily distracted. It helps me knock them out faster which then opens my day for the good stuff! If I am in a creative/productive zone where time is flying, I don't use it. :-) Thank you for the reply!

    Hi Andrej, thanks for the video.
    I have some trouble with tracking sleep using Toggl... On the days I sleep before midnight, the sleep is included in that previous day, while if I sleep after midnight it is included in the new day. This becomes a problem when sleep from two "days" gets bunched up and then there are some days with no sleep. Is there any workaround for this apart from splitting the sleep entry into two? This is not an ideal solution because it is still grouping parts from two different days of sleep.

    • @LocalizationAcademy
      @LocalizationAcademy  Před 3 lety +1

      hi Karthik - yep, I have that same "problem". I don't mind because I look at my hours from a weekly perspective (Total hours - hours slept = how much time I had to do something good). instead of splitting an entry into two, you can just move the start time to the right day. So let's say it's Wed and you go sleep after midnight - it would count as Thu sleep, but you can just move it to Wed by adjusting the start time. This can help you balance your daily time management... but at the same time it won't represent when you actually went to bed, if this is an important information for you. Not sure if I'm making sense here...

    • @rikudoukarthik
      @rikudoukarthik Před 3 lety

      @@LocalizationAcademy You definitely make sense. I guess I'll have to think about what I want to prioritise---timings/schedule/routine vs. overall time spent/available...

    This is a valuable video Andrej, thank you. I've thought about tracking in my personal life and there are some insights here that help. Unless I've missed something this is the free version. What's your opinion of the Starter tier? I have no team, so those features are of no value to me. The "tasks" (sub-projects) feature might be useful for me but I'm not sure if it's worth the price. I'm curious about your opinion.

    • @LocalizationAcademy
      @LocalizationAcademy  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Todd, thanks for leaving a comment! You're correct, this video is based on a FREE version. It's been 6 months after I had made this video and I still keep running Toggl 24/7, never paid a cent.
      You can structure your time entries using Project and Clients, so you technically have 3 levels already. I talk about this around 11:00. If you want to have "sub-projects", consider adding your projects as Clients (the top level) and then add sub-projects as Projects for a certain client. If you just need to see how much time you spend on sub-projects (Projects) and projects (Clients), then this hack can get it done.

    How toggl can be better than aforementioned apps? Or can you do comparison between Trello with MeisterTask and toggl with TickTick.

      hey Abu, sorry for the late reply, I haven't received any notification for your comment.
      I use Trello for my own personal projects and I'm very happy. It's just to organize all the to-dos and work on the important things. So I don't need to track time there because I'm also using it only by myself. Just google "Trello time tracking", I see there are power-ups that add this functionality into Trello.
      I tried MeisterTask before, haven't stuck to it. TickTick I haven't heard of :)
      Toggl can't replace Trello for sure, there's no Kanban board as far as I know. I use it for a very specific task only (time tracking) and it excels in that area. But I wouldn't run my projects there, just like you, I like the visual overview that Trello offers.
