      I was with you until you stated ''from opera to growling''... Yeah, no. Flor can sing in a classic way, not opera. Same as Tarja - she never sang opera, she sang operatic. There is a huge difference.
      ''Tarja was ALL opera, ALL the time. It's like she didn't have the ability to switch it up. '' No, she wasn't all opera, since she didn't sing opera. Ability to switch it up? Switch, what up? That was the style the band was going for. It's like critcising Mariah Carey for not growling in her songs.
      The original version was made to suite the Tarja's voice, the new version is modified to suit Flor's voice better. Those two are two different arrangements. Tarja's and Flor's style differes - that's why the songs sound different. And ''like she's singing it as a lullaby''... I always thought that was the point.
      Yes, Flor is the current front woman of NW... before her it was Anette, and before Anette there was Tarja, the OG.
      ''She wanted out and she got her wish.'' - that's debatable, they way they ended was a mess.
      ''wanted a different change in her life'' - Yet, she still does the same/similar type od music (+ a lot more classical stuff using her operatic voice to it's potential).
      ''But it's been 15 years. GET OVER IT!!'' - it seems that you still didn't get over it... just saying.
      Tl; dr: 2 different singers, 2 different arrangements, 2 different styles, 2 different periods... both singers respects each other to the fullest and have collaborated together, the band and Tarja moved on but are still in contact. That's all.

      @michaelavanduesen Před rokem +12

      @@monicacarolina6480 the timbre is light. We aren't talking about textures. She is what many professionals have called contemporary style while Tarja is definitely classical. Tarja's timbre is much richer, deeper, heavier, fuller and would easily project more. Floor is still an amazing singer who can do lots with her voice. But her timbre is lighter, floats more, but with that, it requires more to project. Her range seems to be higher as well. I've heard her music outside of night wish as well. Timbre differences doesn't mean one is worse or better. Some people have preferences and so of course we have two sides in this. And some out of spite. Both are great singers. I may personally prefer tarja's timbre, I still recognize and enjoy floor's performances too.

    🙂 Enjoyed your reaction. It was 2004 when I first heard this song and I fell in love with Tarja's vocals on it. I had already been a Nightwish fan for 7 years and was very familiar with the range & beauty of her vocals. I was impressed with this performance and sad that she was fired from the band, right after. But when I watched Floor perform this song, in 2013, she took me to an all new level of appreciation. Floor can easily project the roller coaster of emotions, of this song, while Tarja could only deliver an operatic performance with no emphasis on emotion. This song now belongs to Floor. Nightwish and Floor have taken each other to bigger success and have brought in more fans than they ever had with Tarja or Annette. And that's a very good thing.🤘💜🤘

    I think this is a bad song to start out with for several reasons. , Tarja had the flue during this gig. 2, Anette and Floor had reinvented this song quite a lot over the years, and yes, it was actually Anette who first started to change the ending of Ghost Love Score, not Floor, but sadly most current fans don't recognize that and pretty much want to fast forward in the history and forget the Anette era and the two incredible albums she was part of.
    I would personally choose Slaying the Dreamer or Phantom of the Opera from this gig.
    With that said, Tarja has a very successful solo career and her voice has continued to develop, and she is actually way more versatile than she ever was in Nightwish.

      Yeah in the morning rehearsal Tarja told in an interview, she couldn't sing at all. So obviously it got better towards the evening. Still Tarja lost her voice in the second half of GLS and none of her songs in that concert are the best of hers. Maybe Phantom and Opera was saved, because it's sung so operatic fashion. In her open letter after the concert Tarja said she was so happy when she could pull the concert to the end despite of her flu. So obviously it was still an issue for her thoughout the concert.

    Tarja, Anette and Floor all had their own styles.
    Tarja's was opera-esque with orchestra and just full on paving the way for symphonic metal as a genre. Having her go really was the end of an era, but their final live concert together was and still is amazing, especially the beginning of Ever Dream. That part still gets me to this day.
    Anette leaned more towards folk (imo) and while she didn't have Tarja's range you just can't go wrong with Amaranth, Escapist or Turn Loose the Mermaids. It's a shame they had to let her go after they finally found the style of music that fit Anette perfectly with Imaginaerum, I would have loved to see what they would have and could have made with her.
    And Floor can take (almost) any song that was written for Tarja or Anette and make it her own, coupled with her amazing stage presence. Her vocal range and talent are astounding, you can feel the energy in the songs and even more so in concerts. While I'm sad about both Tarja *and* Anette leaving, Floor really is the best Nightwish could have asked for. She fits in perfectly with the band and their dynamic, and I love her just as much as I love Tarja and Anette.
    I just love Nightwish so much.

    I'm not looking to start a range war, but everyone has their own opinion of who is the "best" singer of Nightwish, they are all good singers and did a fabulous job at the time of their involvement with the band. I never heard of the band until 5 or 6 months ago, so, of course, my 1st exposure to the band was with Floor as the singer. Fell in love with the versatility of her voice and her stage presence. Of course, after reading many comments, I had to go back in time and listen to Tarja and Anette (sp?). Tarja has an amazing voice, beautiful and clean, but seems (at least from what I've heard) pretty much one style. Anette, great studio singer, powerful, but a little "poppy"; not so great in concert. Floor, well, and this is MY opinion, seems to be what Nightwish should have now.

    • @Rosannasfriend

      We talked a lot about versatility, but it's not really that important to be a versatile singer anyway. Floor fans seem to be making it a rule, and it's kind of unfair when you think about it. Especially if someone is only a contemporary singer, most of these people making comments about "Versatility" wouldn't be going on and on and on about versatility then. It is because classical isn't there a cup of tea, they are looking for "versatility".

    You're right about the background vocals in the chorus. Nightwish totally changed the mix of this song with Floor. In the Tarja version during the chorus the choir is actually the foreground vocals while Tarja sings the background vocals; they switched this with Floor, you can barely hear the choir during the chorus. And overall they made it more heavy to fit Floor's style.
    This song is where the term "Floorgasm" was invented, because Floor actually invented that last part of the final chorus that is not present in the original song as you heard from Tarja!

    Floor can sing from ethereal, classical and operatic singing, to powerful belting, and aggressive, raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. She is a soprano. Floor started studying music at the Dutch Rock Academy in 1999, entering the Conservatorium Tilburg three years later. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. Later, she started teaching . Tarja is a lovely singer just different. I personally prefer Floor 😊

  • @Harhamieli
    @Harhamieli Před 4 lety +6

    The differences in singers shortly: Tarja is the one with beautiful classical style singing with being able to keep her personal tone of voice because of her work in Nightwish, Anette was the best of the three in storytelling, she truly was the storyteller Tuomas always wished for and Floor is the one who can technically jump around most of these three. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses and above all, all three have qualities that make them unique as singers.
    Many like to suggest End Of an Era for Tarja reactions because it was the latest release with her but personally I think that alone is a bit poor comparison because she was fired that night and you can see the tension and that they had not talked in months from the performance. If you want to see the band having the same enthusiasim with Tarja and Anette as they do with Floor I'd suggest From Wishes to Eternity with Tarja and live with Anette from 2011. :)

    • @naphackDT
      @naphackDT Před 4 lety

      To put it into simple words, Tarja emphasizes the melody, Anette the lyrics and Floor the feelings. There are those who say that Floor is the best out of the three, but her expressive singing style definitely has its limits.... Which is actually a good thing. She could easily sing Deep Silent Complete just as Tarja did, she could easily sing a Storytime or Last Ride of the Day that is just as amazing as Anette's version, but she chooses to stick to her own style and add a lot of texture, accentuation and expression to the song. While it won't flow as well as it would with Anette, and definitely not as well as it would with Tarja (who in turn is hard to understand at times,) it also feels more alive. So on its most basic level, it's a simple tradeoff. Tarja meshes better with the symphonic style and Anette meshes better with the groovy style the band perfected with Imaginaerum. Meanwhile Floor goes like "let's add a bit of contrast to this bit here," and I love every bit of it.

    Annette hired on after a year long search. Up unti she went into labour and had to leave the tour and the band. Floor was hired on a temp basis with 48 hours to learn the setlist. She formally joined the band in 2011. With her good friend Tarja's blessing. They are friends to this day so ignore the drama from fans. Floor had led two different bands before NW so she was already experienced. While Tarja is from the same small town of Kitee that Thomas is. Her mother taught him piano. Without Tarja and her powerful voice even as a teenager NW would have been a folk rock band not symphonic metal.
    No need to feel bad for Tarja, she has gone on to a brilliant single career with 8 almbums, 6 concerts. 2 full concert dvds. near 20 some videos 2 eps and 50 singles. Anette is more pop/rock, and you can find some great stuff sung by her. Both Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum are great albums. I prefer her quieter songs like "Slow Love Slow" and "Meadows of Heaven", but she does a pretty decent job on all her studio stuff. She just had the problem of trying to sing Tarja's opera stuff live, which wasn't really fair for her. Then Floor came along and sang all of her stuff better, because she's Floor!

    The background chorus, sings "My fall will be for you , my love will be in you, if you be the one to cut me, i'll bleed forever'' and in the end "My fall will be for you , my love will be in you, you were the one to cut me, so i'll bleed forever"

    Just fyi for the album ONCE 2004 of which this was the last date (October 21,2005) Helsinki, Finland, the tour was called Once Upon A Tour. Support for the album and the DVD was always planned for 2006 release. After Tarja's departure the DVD and concert became the End of an Era,and so tilted. Now as I was saying, the band hited London Symphony Orchestra or parts thereof to provide accompaniment on the album and every album since. In addition the choir was London's Metro Choir's Voices.
    Yes Tarja sings like a featured singer would do with a choir. Not drown them out nor be drowned out but blend with them,but staying in the forefront sonically of course. Nor does she outshine her bandmates by hogging the limelight. She cheers on and hypes the audience. She plays to and with the audience as a front woman in the front of the band but knows to step back and let the boys have their time to feature. As part of an ensemble. It shows professionalism. NO I am not going to compare or contrast that to anyone else. Its enough to say she was very very good at her job. She loved what she did and has said at this point she was finally satisfied that her voice was what she wanted it to be as part of Nightwish. The album has her sounding as she felt was correct. Then.
    9 years and many tours and countless gigs,from clubs,tv, to arenas,festivals and stadiums, to hone their craft. No one even in darkest days ever said that anyone in the band was not capable or failed to perform in a manner not befitting their record as a group. This lineup with Marki went back to 2001. 4/5 years together they knew their craft. It shows here how good they were. Now that we should all agree on without controversy or disagreements. The 1st 9 years were good years without which years 10 onwards could not have ever happened. We have lots of recordings. We have the albums. The 1st era is saved. Who likes what best is not the point. Only that thank goodness it was. The band were trailblazers. Pioneers in female fronted metal and in the genre of symphonic metal. A few contemporaries and they created the genre. Created the thing out of whole cloth. For posterity's sake thank you for that. Now future fans can find it and enjoy it like those who were there at the time.

    It's so sad that some people think to love Floor you have to hate Tarja and to love Tarja you have to hate Floor. They are actually friends and respect each other, and totally DIFFERENT singers with something special and unique about each of them. We are lucky that Tarja went solo and now we have two great bands to listen to. Hope you do reaction to Tarja solo stuff, because it's very different musically and her singing changed in a very interesting way, in my opinion, she sings even better now. Hope you get a chance to watch Tarja live someday because it's totally different in many ways. Great review, thanks!

    A lot of people's favorite Nightwish singer is the one they first heard. In addition to Tarja, Annette, and Floor, Nightwish has had many other singers for one reason or the other over the years and all were good for one reason or another (including Tuomas!) so going down the rabbit hole of which is "best" is pointless. However the first song I heard from them was their cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes from the End of an Era DVD, which makes me "Team Marco" :-)

    I started with NW in 2002 and was hooked. When Once came out I didn’t love this song with Tarja and first really fell in love with it after Floor came into the band. Some of my favorite Tarja songs are Deep Silent Complete and Slaying the Dreamer. While Floor rocks these songs, I prefer the Tarja versions.

    I completely agree with you when it comes to comparing the singers. As for the background choir, as has already been mentioned by others they are present in the Wacken concert as well, but considerably more in the background (IMO, perhaps a little bit too much). You can even see part of the crowd singing along with the choir 😀 The intermezzo is the same as well. Thanks for the reaction - as always, it was fun to watch!

    My favorite songs by each singer. Tarja , Phantom of the Opera, my favorite cover of this song. Annette, Bye Bye Beautiful. Floor, Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013. But Floor has become my all time favorite singer and Nightwish is the band I would most like to see live. Nightwish is now my favorite band and this is coming from a fan whose favorite band was Led Zeppelin that I saw live in 1970.

    in those early days the production and singing style designed by Tuomas were meant to accentuate Tarja's head voice for angelic effects..her original vocals involved a very deep, mezzo flowing, reverberating splendor as in the :from "Wishes tom eternity concert" from 2001, the lowlands concert from 2005, summer breez concert from 2002 , and the great Raumanmeri one from 2003......further,Tuomas wrote in a climactic ending for Floor's version....

    Not my favorite Tarja performance, good to pick a song you know though. That entire show was fantastic, GLS was actually the low point arguably.
    'The Siren'
    'Creek Mary's Blood' (99.9% chance to never be played again)
    'Tekee Kuolema Taiteilijan' (when I think of Tarja, it's this)
    All from that show, each not done by Floor (yet), each feature different scopes of Tarja's vibrato
