On Board the Loudest Exige V6 Ever! - Straight Piped Lotus Exige Cup 380

- Yesterday during a track day at Monza Circuit I met again the loud Lotus Exige Cup 380 I saw and recorded a few months ago. The car is still fitted with a decatted and straight piped exhaust but now it has a new 7-speed sequential gearbox which further improve both car's performance and the driving experience.
The owner was kind enough to let me put my GoPro inside the cockpit and enjoy a few test laps made with the new gearbox together with a friend's race driver and driving instructor giving him a few tips and advice.
Is it just me or with that sound and sequential it sounds like an old V12 GT1 race car?

It's mindblowing to think that this engine started life in a Toyota Camry, and now in supercharged, exhaust upgrade form, it is one of the best sounding V6's ever

The ignition cut for the gearbox is very poorly calibrated. Poor transmission. Sounds amazing, though.
detaart I had the same impression. The upshifts when done at red line are awesome, just like a horse kick exact like it should be. But the downshifts are not good enough ! I dont know if the driver was saving the gearbox, but definetly this downshifts could be more agressive. About the sound... nothing to say, just gorgeous v6 note !!
Downshifts were done using the clutch. Upshifts are the problem here.

This is how it should be. Just enough cut to pick up the slack in the drive train. Not that double kick you see in this video. That's very hard on the drivetrain.

From the sound of it they were hitting the rev limiter even in seventh. Perhaps they could have done with eight speeds.
Still the best sounding v6 for me are Honda nsx type r, Porsche 911 gt3 RS and Nissan Gtr r34
They all have different 6cl engines though my friend, only the Nsx used V6 911 is flat 6 & Skyline GTR inline 6

So wait with a sequential you still hAve to clutch between every gear or..?
There are many different types of gearboxes in race cars:
1. H- Pattern with synchros. You need to clutch when up and down shifting
2. Same as 1 but with straight cut gears. No clutch but throttle lift on upshift. Use Clutch on down shift.
3. Same as 2 but with ignition cut. No clutch and no lift on upshift. Use Clutch on down shift.
4. Seq. gearboxes are just H-Pattern boxes but they have a new mechanic inside, that you just need to push or pull the lever to get to next or previous gear. The mechanic for gear selection is the same. So you need to lift the trottle if you don´t have ignition cut but you don´t need the clutch on upshifts and you need the clutch on down shifts.
5. Paddle shift in race cars is mostly based on seq. gearboxes but they added a pneumatic or hydraulik cylinder for throttle blip. No clutch on up or downshifts.

It's sounds shit as well now. How to ruin any car: put a shitty sequential/dsg gearbox.
Nice sounding V6 and all, but man, that Lotus still has a long way to go... ~6200-6400rpm redline is way too little for such short 7 speed gears. Topping out at 200km/h? C'mon now... the fwd Civic just walked on and out sped the Lotus. There's a "9" on the tach, so use it. Build the motor, boost the thing, whatever... the car is just way too underpowered. Shifting through 7 gears and all you can pass is a fcking Fiat...that's just stupid.
GearHead RD not actually convinced the shifts are any quicker than a traditional manual. Downshifts are nasty as hell too
I would rather drive a Porsche with the PDK. This thing is crude and loud!

I agree 100%. Porsche PDK is the gold standard. I appreciate variety though. The exhaust on this Lotus sounds great from the exterior.
