Sudheer Gaitonde was Mr. Gangadhar Chittal's brother-in-law, his wife Meera Chittal's brother. Sudheer wanted to become a pilot since his childhood. His elders arranged a bank job for him, but he chose to join Airforce. Within a short time he became Squadron leader. A few days before Pakistan War in 1971, he and one Mr. SHETTY from Belagavi participated in a sortee exercise from Airforce Station in Agra and the plane crashed. Not a single identifiable body part was found at the site of accident. A little soil from the site was gathered and funeral of both heroes was performed at Agra under full military honors.
That's why the poem states
"Mannagiddane Huduga" (The boy has become the dust).
In those days it was 50-50% possibility that an Airforce pilot will face death in a crash. But Sudheer's feet refused to tread the listless existence on this dim and dull earth with its onerous challenges with scant rewards but to boldly and enthusiastically accept the flying career with its inbuilt thrills notwithstanding the associated dangers.
